Documentation Dysfunction – Serious Issue for Buyers and Sellers

Might be time to call your representative in Congress. That's one thing they're there for, and sometimes it works. And if enough people call, they might actually do something about the problem.

    The Pod Parted

So maybe a one-month delivery time is normal. Million-dollar boats waiting for $20,000 pods, so Mercury can manage its cash flow.

    Twin Engines - Rudders Required?

Still here, learning. I expected skepticism, as I too am skeptical. Why the hostility?

    The Pod Parted

The comparison is inapt. I can rent a car, or buy another, while I wait for repairs. Can't do that with the boat. The boat is "mission critical." My employer distributes expensive, long-lead machines manufactured by others. If our customers thought they might have to wait more than a month...

    The Pod Parted

On further reflection, Sabre might be in the mix. If Sabre offers the boat only with the Zeus, and it takes more than a month to get a drive from Mercury, I won't buy a Zeus and I won't buy a Sabre. Sabre might have an interest in keeping a spare drive in stock to convince someone like me to...

    The Pod Parted

This is not a warranty event; not sure why Sabre would be in the mix. Nor are Zeus drives new; they've been out for years. If the "normal" time it takes to get a drive replaced is more than one month, I won't buy the product.

    Twin Engines - Rudders Required?

I appreciate the many thoughtful comments. Some responses: I am thinking about a power catamaran. The most I'll need is perhaps 125 hp per hull. I started out looking at pods, but can't find any that small. I don't want a science project trying to cobble together something. Steering will...

    Twin Engines - Rudders Required?

If I can dock using throttle differential, why can't I steer using throttle differential? Advantages of rudders: Steer the boat Disadvantages of rudders: Heavy Expensive Drag Potential big hole in boat Linkages, etc. clutter up spaces Maintenance Fouling Hard working AP...

Documentation Dysfunction – Serious Issue for Buyers and Sellers

Don't think this is the answer. The OP bought a documented boat. I don't think it became "undocumented" by virtue of being sold. But the COD became obsolete because it has the wrong ownership information on it. More interesting is the phrase "currently in effect." In the OP's case, no such...

    Mooring use

Sorry, didn't make my point clearly, as it is the same thing. Many lobster/crab pots are not "commercial," but that doesn't matter either. The point is, appropriating to yourself the fruit of someone else's effort/stuff, is a tricky business, regardless of your justifications. A different...

Do not apply this reasoning to lobster/crab pots. Get yourself killed.

Documentation Dysfunction – Serious Issue for Buyers and Sellers

Documents emerged in which the politician bosses ordered their departments to cut first where the public would feel it most. To punish us for cutting their budgets. At the same time they were going on boondoggles to Vegas, they were closing parks. I think it's still going on. The last two...

    Gas vs. Diesel

Nobody has mentioned torque, so I will. Diesel engines produce a lot more torque than gas engines, especially at low rpm. You can't use a transmission to vary the torque/speed relationship on a boat, like you can on a car. So when you need a lot of torque to manuever a big boat at low speeds...

What Happens When You Unplug From the Dock?

I'm going to build the beach house I've always wanted. Problem is, I can't decide which beach. So the beach house has to float. And that forces certain compromises. But electricity is not going to be one of them. (Wife's shoe collection is going to take a hit.) The floating beach house is...

    The Pod Parted

Well, don't forget there are a lot of offsets to the cost, including one or more thrusters if you want anything like the manueverability of pods. In a big boat with a lot of windage, on a windy day, waiting at a crowded lock, or trying to get into a skinny berth, you don't have to be...

    The Pod Parted

Gave some thought to pods: Advantages: Maneuverability during docking, mooring, locking Efficiency (maybe not so much in a 10kph displacement boat) Eliminates rudders, steering wheel, linkages, auto pilot linkages Eliminates bow thruster (?) Exhaust through the foot reduces...
