Teak decking on 2000+ Kadey Krogen 39

Thanks bglad and FF, I guess re-bedding suspect areas soon after taking possession and then periodic monitoring for any sign of deterioration (if visible?).

Teak decking on 2000+ Kadey Krogen 39

That may explain the retention of teak on those areas of the Krogen. Thanks, G

Great positive news! Will contact the Krogen people before any potential offer. Thanks Jim.

Teak decking on 2000+ Kadey Krogen 39

Thanks Marin, for your helpful comments. We really love the look and feel of weathered teak. I guess there are three levels of risk. a) Screws through the grp skin into balsa or other wood core. b) Screws through the grp skin into some form of non-rotting synthetic core. c) No screws. Grae.

Teak decking on 2000+ Kadey Krogen 39

Having absorbed much of the "anti-teak" sentiment expressed here I have a question. While comparing raised pilothouse trawlers in the 37-42 foot range circa 2000 vintage we have developed a liking for the Krogen 39 pilothouse. We may consider older and longer boats for similar money to the 34-37...

    What is a reasonable offer?

Today we were gifted a number of old "Passagemaker" magazines. We were interested to note that in 2007 sellers were asking close to the same money for 2001/2 models (of trawlers we are interested in) as is being asked for the same vintage in 2015. Does this mean that these models are a good...

    Annual maintenance cost

I have always interpreted "maintenance" as just the cost of maintaining the boat in top condition as dinstiinct from "lifestyle" choices (marina vs hook etc). The lifestyle part should be able to be individually budgeted?

    Annual maintenance cost

Logically smaller, newer and mechanically simpler would be at the lower end of the scale. At least that's what I'm hoping! I guess even that is quite a generalisation. Grae

Requirements for foreigners on US waters?

Hi Marty, The boats we are considering are: Nordic Tug 32+/37 and American Tug 34. These have a fairly low air draft I believe We like the lower CG and forward pilothouse and are keeping an open mind re other brands that may offer similar characteristics. We like the prospect of the lower...

Requirements for foreigners on US waters?

Hi Twisted Tree, Thanks alot for referring me to "Loopy Kiwi" as, apart from being very interesting, the 'blog contained some specific answers. These combined with your informative reply has removed several areas of uncertainty: 1) Register the craft in NZ. 2) Obtain a Foreign Cruising Permit...

Requirements for foreigners on US waters?

Hi Bruce, We have many companies that arrange shipping and at least one that does the same as "SS Boats". The ones we have questioned appear to be disinterested in shipping from anywhere but Florida. We would intend to inspect ourselves and have the surveys done. Although at present importing is...

Requirements for foreigners on US waters?

Hypothetical case: I (as a New Zealander) wish to buy a trawler from a vendor located somewhere on the great loop and take it to Florida for shipping home. This trip would comprise part of either the Eastern or Western section only. 1) Are there any legal qualifications required? 2) Any other...

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

We're looking at probably the end of 2015 if we have found a suitable boat at that time. Thanks, G

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

Thanks alot for you very comprehensive contribution. I appreciate the time you have taken (and all others!) to assist. Short answers to your numbered points: 1) Sounds hopeful. I'll look up Aurora Global Logistics for any NZ connection. 2) I have done some superficial advance research where...

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

Maybe they were just simplifying the situation for the ignorant! I have not however, given up on the west coast and have time for more detective work. If they did come back to Australasia without a full load then maybe a "back load" would be less expensive. Will do more digging. Thanks.

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

One would think Long Beach would be best being just across the pacific, however any shipper we have asked has told us to forget the idea. Apparently they are basically a container port, not set up for shipping boats and/or expensive. Thanks for confirming the general trend of advice re conversion.

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

That is very interesting. We have always been interested in PNW and would love to explore. Never been farther north than San Francisco. One potential problem though is shipping the boat home to NZ. We are told that shipping from the west coast is very difficult compared with sourcing in Florida...

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

It's a great help to hear from a contributor who has been through the process. Thanks for the offer of more specific info and I would like to take you up on that a little farther down the track if that's OK? When we are closer to finding the right boat I'll be better equipped to ask the right...

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

I have googled some of the brands/models of fridge, freezer etc and most seem to be dual voltage. Microwave, TV etc are not so important. Most important is battery charging from shore mains power.

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

This is the long answer to your boat model question! Hopefully not too off topic. I have started my research about 10-12 months in advance primarily to ascertain the viability of importing our preferred boat from the large "pool" of vessels in North America. We are looking at Nordic Tug 32+...

    Converting 120v/60hz to 240v/50hz

The boat will stay in NZ and the complete conversion would be my far preferred option for all the reasons you quote. The transformer possibility had been rubbished in the historic threads as well, so I wondered if it was just too simple to be true! So after that red herring and back to my...
