cooling action on a Perk T6.354

John, I have never owned a Perkins, except my small Volvo sailboat engine was a Perkins that was labelled and marinized by Volvo. When you say maiden voyage, is that "first of the season" or "first since you took over ownership"? Are you sure that the cooling system is operating at peak...

Black gunk under my battery caps.

My guess would be some kind of reaction (disintegration) of the rubber seals inside the "Miser" caps???

Larger/older vs. smaller/new for the same price

Nick, My free advice (worth every penny you paid) relates mostly to the TIME issue. You seem to feel that time is of the essence. There is also no guarantees as to your future. Things can happen??? So, with that in mind, my advice is to order the new build now (or ASAP). With the used market...

First Nations buying Shearwater Marina in BC

Ken, While Ocean Falls is an interesting place and worth a visit, it is basically (almost) a ghost town. There are very few regular residents. They have very little in the way of any "services", and do not have any real stores to buy "supplies". The docks are very good, and the water is...

    Mainship house batteries

Personally I would not want to leave my boat wired that way, especially for the reasons that Dave mentioned. Also, "dual purpose" batteries (ones that are supposed to be good for both house (deep cycle) and starting) make poor house banks. It is best to have true deep cycle (like golf carts)...

First Nations buying Shearwater Marina in BC

Yes, it is an important stop on the Central BC coast. I also hope that it continues to be well run and open for business. I am sad about some of the closures and changes that are/have happened in the Broughtons. I worry about the future for the surviving marinas there.

Crossing U.S. and Canadian Border PNW

Steve is correct. It is north of the ferry terminal by a ways (different bay even).

Crossing U.S. and Canadian Border PNW

ASD is now anchored just outside of Campbell River across the way behind Gowlland Island. Just saw this on Marine Traffic. No I am not ASD nor related.

Are you using a Bridle with your anchoring setup?

"Question: What's the best knot to use for tying the bridle or just a snubber line to a rope rode? Only one I know is the rolling hitch." Besides the rolling hitch and the prussik hitch, the Icicle hitch is a great knot, and not that hard to tie and easy to untie. The following is from a...

    Heater(s) for trawler

I have owned both air and hydronic diesel fired heating. There are pros and cons to both. As stated: hydronic systems are easily zoned, can be used to heat the water heater or preheat the engine, as well as heating the boat. This system uses relatively thin hoses so routing them is easier than...

    Security... Security

Excepting where required by regulation (eg. signage etc.), it is even more important where visibility will be restricted such as under fog conditions or where there is a sharp turn in the narrow channel. Just ensure that you take a few moments ahead of announcing the Securite to plan your...

    Preventative Maintenance Cooling System

If you were able to go 29 years without any issues, that is FANTASTIC. Not something I would recommend to anyone though. Corrosion can and often does occur inside these components and internal leaks can develop. Gear oil coolers can fail and dump all of the transmission oil and fill the tranny...

    Which coolant should I use?

I had a Cummins 6BTA (2002) engine. Tony Athens states that these engines are not coolant sensitive. However, it is easiest to replace with the same coolant you have been using. Some coolants don't mix well and can "gum up" the "works". If you don't know what you have in there now, then a flush...

    Lunasea sold

Sorry to hear about your health condition. I recently sold my boat as well, and do miss it. All the best, enjoy, and take care, :)

What's The best that's good enough

Many will disagree, but I found decent results with Cetol. Just use the Natural Teak colour, followed by 2 coats of clear. To maintain, add one more coat of clear each year. Admittedly I have not done this type of work for several years, and products could have changed.

    Seawise Hydraulic Davit System

Some people have stayed with the manual one, but just set it up so they can use a cordless electric drill. Maybe an idea to try unless you have switched to a larger (heavier) dinghy.

    Preventative Maintenance Cooling System

The best preventative maintenance I can recommend for your raw water cooling system is regular freshwater flushing (if possible after each run, in a perfect world). Doing this will help greatly in reducing the ravages of "marine age" (saltwater damage over time). Running things like Barnacle...

    Questions from a diesel rookie

Former PNWer eh! Notice the Canadian part :) Yes, it does sound exciting to explore a new much warmer area with very different problems/issues to deal with. Paying regularly to have the saltwater cooling system serviced can get expensive, but failure to service it can cost lots more. Doing it...

    Questions from a diesel rookie

I have the 6BTA engine on my (former) boat and I did almost all of my own servicing. The QSB is not that different, and the aftercooler looks very similar from the photos I have seen. Freshwater flushing your engine after each use (as often as a good supply of dock water is available) will...

    Volvo ??

As Keith stated, there are Volvo supporters and those who would chose to avoid them. I have told my experiences here on TF several times. My experience with Volvo and Volvo Canada in particular started in 2005 (with a new boat) and ended when I sold that boat in late 2015. Most brands of boat...

    dry vs wet exhaust

Where I moored, there are a large number of commercial boats (both fishing and Tugs) all with dry exhaust. Also the harbour is a busy seaplane port. I found it annoying trying to "take care of my boat" and keep it clean. One time, after spending 2 full days on my hands and knees cut polishing...

    Want British Columbia Insurance recommendations

Hi Sue, Welcome to Canada! (well soon). It sounds exciting, but it is probably difficult to get the necessary correct information. I suggest Johnston Meier Insurance (https://jmins.com/marine/) as worth checking out. We have always dealt with Calista Johnston for our marine needs and found her...

WTB Nordic 37' or AT 34'

I just sold mine, and advise keeping a close eye out. Right now, for these boats, it is a seller's market and finding one is like trying to find "hen's teeth". Very difficult to do. :) Good luck.

    Estimated GPH

Rthomas, My math and yours for hull speed give different results, but the general principle we both agree. You calculated a hull speed of 7.2 knots for a 39 foot LWL, while I calculate the hull speed to be just over 8.3 knots. I do agree that for best miles per gallon burned you are best to be...
