best product for maintaining cabinet finish

Nordic Tugs recommends using a regular (2 times per year) application of Lemon Oil (Formby's - but that brand is hard to find) as a maintenance method. To do more of a "refinish" they recommend using SeaFin Teak oil, and if I remember correctly, it is mixed with the Lemon Oil 50/50. Anyway...

    Seattle Waste Spill

"That hardly seems like they are ignoring it." So "upgrades" are needed to prevent "accidental" discharges that have occurred several times in the past and they are "just getting to those now"? Like RTF says, sounds "proactive" to me. :) The ignoring I was actually talking about has nothing to...

What Type of Anode is Best for York River and Chesapeake?

It is my understanding that zinc anodes develop a "coating" when exposed to fresh or even brackish water. This coating does not come off by itself, it must be scrubbed off, and it insulates the anode stopping or drastically slowing down the protection the anode should otherwise provide...

    Seattle Waste Spill

Yeah, so what is your point!! I guess I am just in "one of those moods today". In seriousness, I think the main "upset" for boaters is the fact that regularly the Government officials (both Countries) look for new regulations to put in place for "boater discharges", no matter how...

Crossing U.S. and Canadian Border PNW

I would agree that "all but the capable" should avoid most of these areas. However, most boaters can become "capable", but it does require some effort to learn, some effort to get your boat "ready", etc. The various rapids, Johnstone Strait, and heading north of Cape Caution are not areas (or...

    Estimated GPH

Assumption: Sounds like a Marine Trader is a semi-displacement boat. From my years running my Nordic Tug, which is a semi-displacement hull, I found that running slightly below hull speed was the "sweet spot" for fuel consumption. We had a Cummins 6BTA, 330 hp engine and we operated it between...

Changing Racor & On engine fuel filter?

For more (maybe more than you actually want) info on fuel filtration, I suggest checking out Tony Athens' website sbmar.com under both his "Tony's Tips" and the various forums. The "gold standard" for fuel filtration would be a multi-stage setup. In a "perfect world" you would start with a "mud"...

    Starting a diesel

Jim, PM me with your email address if you want to talk Nordic Tugs. Also, if you are interested, I could send you a Word file of the "owner's manual" that I "put together" from various sources including Nordic Tug factory and other owners. I also have a lot of other research to do with various...

Changing Racor & On engine fuel filter?

I had dual Racors for my primaries. I phoned Racor and was told that leaving my "backup" filter full of clean fuel (and not using it) for even 2 years was not a problem. (Switching to the "backup" in the 3rd season). I changed my "in use" primary once per year which usually averaged about 200...

    Source of Water for Head.

Other than using (and therefore shortening) water from your freshwater supply, which is limited unless you have a watermaker, freshwater flushing is the way to go. I have had heads using seawater and they tend to smell, lead to the premature clogging of hoses, etc. If possible, use freshwater.

New threat to BC wild salmon revealed

I have believed for years, that these types of fish farms should be stopped. There must be other methods that could be used to continue raising farmed fish and to protect wild stocks at the same time. EG. tanks on land??

Fire Aboard US Navy Cruiser in Seattle - Sailors Quick action Minimizes Damage

Having a good level of knowledge regarding shipboard firefighting in general, but I would certainly not call myself an "expert", I take my hat off to the crews involved in this successful firefight. Well done. Being the Incident Commander of a large, very dangerous, multifaceted incident is not...

    Starting a diesel

Hi Jim, I recently sold my NT 37 with Cummins 6BTA. They are, in my opinion, great boats with great engines. Ski gave you a good answer. The info I remember is generally don't crank longer than 60 seconds. Both my generator (Onan) and engine always started within a few seconds. I installed an...

Crossing U.S. and Canadian Border PNW

Sure it makes sense..... Your Country, your rules. Canadians don't have any say in your laws, rules, etc. Nor should they. In Canada, our Government makes the rules which can be quite different than yours. :) If you don't like the other Country's rules, then stay home. That applies both ways. :)...

    New Canadian tax on boats

With the huge amount of Government Covid related spending, tax increases (and apparently deficit spending) are to be expected. I guess the only thing we can hope is that they (increases) are well thought out and "fair"???

Washington State Boat Taxes Could Double

Tax increases in one form or another should not come as a surprise for most TF members. With all of the drastically increased Government spending (and the huge amount of "money printing") associated with this pandemic, how else are they/we going to pay for it? Elected official's pay cuts? :)

    boats not made in China?

"Tom was your experience back in the 80's." Steve, No, I owned that boat (with the Volvo engine) from late 2004 to late 2013.

    boats not made in China?

First, I know that "dependability" and "functionality" can vary between models with any manufacturer of engines. They all have had some "poor" models. However, from first hand experience with one Volvo engine, I can state that I would avoid ever owning another Volvo marine engine (if possible)...

    Cleaning water tanks

+1 on buy Peggie's book. You can also search these forums as she has posted many, many good posts with this type of info. There is a big difference when it comes to "tank and system" cleaning/sterilizing vs "freshening" or "maintaining" the water in the tank to be used for drinking. Don't...

Washington State Boat Taxes Could Double

Steve, That almost sounds like the "temporary tax" that was put into place (here in Canada) to fund the First World War. If memory serves me correctly (and no I am not thatttttt old) it was called "Income Tax". What tax did they reduce to offset the Carbon tax??? :popcorn:Don't get me...

    Leaky windows

I have not used butyl tape but from all accounts it is a great product for something like this. If you want to use a caullk, I suggest Sikaflex 291 or the UV version (295?). Just adding caulk around the window will not work (at least for any real length of time). As stated above, remove the...

What questions would you ask a buyer's broker?

All good advice so far. Definitely, how much info they request from you (so they can help find the right boat for you) is a good indicator of their interest in actually working and looking for you!! However, it really helps if you have truly figured out exactly what features are most important...

ASD 2021 Preparations for SE Alaska Cruiese

Tom, I am not an expert on the current Canadian entry or transiting requirements, but I would guess that "not having to report" could mean you cannot stop at all, such as for fuel, supplies, or repairs, and maybe not even anchoring (as I seem to remember that anchoring or coming into contact...

On the BC Coast with my new Trawler

You bet it would Tom, and not just so that our American friends can again start to enjoy all the area has to offer. It would also mean that most of this mess (Covid) is behind us, and that, my friend would be a very good thing :)
