    Cummins Fuel cooler removal

Just looking at this logically, I agree with Kevin. Higher water temps will mean a smaller drop in fuel temp using the cooler therefore less reason to use one not more reason. Also, the warmer water temps should not affect much if at all fuel temp with no cooler compared to operating say in the...

Newbie on my way to Vancouver Island

Jim, and others, Sorry, I really confused myself on the fuel economy for the Yamaha. Thinking about it overnight caused some clarification, hopefully. "Edit: I think I confused myself with fuel costs and mixed mpg and hours. It would theoretically cost $1200 more for a 100 mile trip. If my...

Newbie on my way to Vancouver Island

Good points also Sue, and you know much more than I do when it comes to Ranger Tugs!! Good to know about the usual install of diesel furnaces in this area. Makes sense. However, my comments stand for our OP as he is talking about potentially buying a brand new R27 with outboard motor (300 hp...

Newbie on my way to Vancouver Island

No problem Jim, and if that is the way you see as best for you, then go for it!! However, some additional thoughts for your consideration. I am by no means a Ranger Tug "basher". They have a large and very supportive following and you see a fair number of them out on the water. To me, that is a...

    Hi everyone

Jim, Welcome to the Forum!!! :) The biggest piece of advice that I can give is to try to find a boat that has been lovingly maintained. At that price range and size, I would suspect you are limited to a fairly old boat. Older boats can cost a lot in terms of upkeep, maintenance, updating, and...

Newbie on my way to Vancouver Island

Welcome to the Vancouver Island area. With the right boat (meaning mostly the needed equipment), you can boat all year round here if you desire to do so. I agree with all of the others who say the best cruising is north of Nanaimo, although the Gulf Islands in the off season are great as...

    Start/Running Checklist?

I agree with the other 2 posters. I also remove shore power prior to engine start (and after all the pre-start checks) so that after starting I only need to remove the dock lines to get underway and slowly at low rpm warm up the engine under light load as we leave the marina. Because the...

Pumpout on the South Fraser River, BC??

Sue, Sorry to say, but pumping out up here in BC can be a problem. This is even more obvious the further north you go. Our Government is more than happy to make "rules", and then tell small marinas that they should shoulder all costs associated with providing the service. For example, I have had...

    Looking for advice: Which boat?

Who can really predict the various markets?? Personally, I am very surprised with the performance of real estate, boats, RV's etc. what with the economic activity especially as it relates to Covid. I would take a wild guess and say that something has to give (eventually) due to Government...

Anchoring a Grand Banks Europe 52

My first boat came with a CQR. I had great trouble getting it to set!! Very hit and miss, probably due to bottom type. I never trusted it, so until I changed anchors we did not anchor out much. Since then I have used both the Rocna and the Vulcan and cannot say enough good things about them...

    Looking for advice: Which boat?

Jim, Lots of issues to consider in your relocation. What will the real estate market do? How will the boat market respond to the "future, after Covid" (if that even exists for a while) economic changes? etc. One thing I do know is that every time you buy and sell there are considerable expenses...

    Humpback Lands on Boat

I am with you on this Ken. Humpbacks always caused me stress as they are known to not be boat aware, or at the least seem to not care about boats being near. This incident illustrates the reason for concern. I wish the young man and his family the very best.

Vessel FCC license and MMSI number

Going off older recollections from pre-2013, and for Canada. At the time, we were required to obtain a "radio station" license if we expected to operate VHF equipment outside of Canada (Gov. regulation by Industry Canada). I know of at least one Canadian flagged pleasure boat that was operating...

    Nordic tug 26

Rhetorical question, if you find the stack "ugly" (and it is a prominent part of the look) and you don't like the side doors, why purchase that model of boat? Both are a big part of the design and look. I agree with the others, try to make any changes "reversible". For me, the pilothouse doors...

    Anyone not rename their boat?

Our first boat we bought new. When we sold her, we thought about asking the new owners to rename her so we could "keep" the name. We decided not to, and the new owners kept the name. (Bare Necessities). We bought our last boat off of the second owner who did rename the boat when he bought her...

Aftercooler service on FL gulf coast

Den, It is amazing how much of a difference regularly freshwater flushing your raw water cooling side can make!! I know, a broken record, but the very positive affects are talked about on Tony Athens' site sbmar.com under the forums and under his "Tony's Tips". Take the time to explore that...

    Bad fitting anchor on Helmsman

My boat came with a Bruce 20kg (44lb) anchor. I had a Rocna 20 kg that I had kept from my sailboat that I used to replace the Bruce for our first year of use. The 20 kg anchor was "just large enough" according to sizing instructions from the manufacturer and I like to "over size" a bit. With the...

    Aftercooler bolts won't budge

Apply some penetrating oil like PB Blaster and let soak. Use several applications, then a breaker bar for leverage. If no luck, apply some heat to the joint concentrating on the "female" thread side, trying to expand the female side to allow removal? Bolt removal can be troublesome.

    Bad fitting anchor on Helmsman

A Nordic Tug 37 and your Helmsman are similar sized boats. I used a Vulcan 25 kg (55 lb) anchor and was very happy with it's performance. You can download a template of the anchor (actual size) from their website. I made a cardboard cutout to check if it would fit my boat. Maybe other...

    Smallest and easiest to maneuver

Nordic Tug 32? Usually travel at 7-8 knots, can go up to 15 knots depending on how the boat is loaded. Comfortable boat for a couple and very occasional guests. Most have bow thrusters and some have added stern thrusters (or you could add).

Engine hours when buying a used trawler

I agree completely with you thoughts. Different boats, different operator desires (including different ways of enjoying the boating experience), mean there is more than one way to operate a lot of these boats, especially semi-displacement hulls with higher HP engines. But back to the OP and his...

Engine hours when buying a used trawler

That is interesting backinblue. For my Cummins 6BTA, the torque curve starts to flatten above 1700 rpm. However, for my Tug the best fuel consumption (based on miles travelled per gallon burned) is about 1200 rpm. At 1200 rpm the boat usually achieves 7 knots burning 2.0 gallons per hour...

Engine hours when buying a used trawler

I think the main points are valid. Ongoing regular OEM approved maintenance, how the engine was operated (run hard, overloaded, or run relatively easily and here is where the concept of fuel consumption comes in (at least partially)), the concept of "marine age" (or the ongoing ravages of living...

Engine hours when buying a used trawler

Nick has explained it well in the following: "FWIW, I've had a few diesel engineers tell me that total fuel consumption is a more accurate measurement of the life of an engine. This makes sense; an engine that's been run lightly (not WOT all the time) will have consumed less fuel. On the...
