    Sad day

Agree with you Will. However, he did live a long and full life. He was only about 2 months from his 100th birthday. My thought and best wishes are with the Royal Family.

On the BC Coast with my new Trawler

Hi Chilly, Welcome to the forum from across the Salish Sea. The places to go and explore on the BC coast that are within the capabilities of your boat, once you are properly prepared, are practically endless. Enjoy all that your boat and the area has to offer. Who knows, we may even allow our...

    Sealand/Dometic TDX holding tank treatment

Even though having LOTS of holding tank ventilation seems counterintuitive (more vents "seems" like that might just allow more smell to escape), Peggy is so correct. It reduces the odour, so dont' restrict the air flow in any way. NoFlex (and generic products like it) work well. However, like...

    Exhaust elbow

Keith, "Unlike what Tony Athens describes in great detail on Cummins engines, the pinholes only affected the spray pattern, doing no other harm." I have to disagree, at least in theory about the "no other harm" aspect. While it is possible that for a period of time, that a small leak in a...

    Exhaust elbow

It does not matter how good a quality a exhaust elbow is, it has a limited life expectancy and will require replacement. Saltwater (or any water) in a high heat environment will cause corrosion. On my first boat, the elbow was cast iron and lasted about 5-6 years before corrosion became a big...

    Composting toilets

For those with 2 heads on their boats, Peter may be on to something, especially if your boat had a relatively small holding tank. Having the second head a composter could extend time between pumpouts? :whistling:

    Composting toilets

A good friend of mine has used a composting toilet on his RV (living full time in the RV) for several years. He swears by it (loves it). Be aware, that in no discharge zones, dumping the urine overboard is technically illegal. It is not illegal to urinate directly overboard, but you could get...

Does parking come free with your moorage payment?

The Nanaimo Port Authority marina does not provide any parking. You can park in the paid lots in the area run by a private company (Robbins Parking), or pay to park on the street (City collects). When we would go out for any period of time, I would drive the car home, after loading the boat, and...

    boats not made in China?

Skyhawk, While they make great boats for coastal cruising, neither Nordic nor American Tugs are considered "off shore" or "passagemaking" boats. They are very capable of "hopping" down a coast in "open water" as long as careful, prudent, passage planning is used taking into account weather...

    Battery bank charging

Steve, One more advantage to solar that I forgot to mention is battery life. By fully recharging the bank to 100% (at least more frequently if not almost every day), you avoid the deadly (to most batteries) operating in a partial state of charge. Regular PSOC operation is murder on most...

    Battery bank charging

Steve, Sorry for not answering sooner, but just saw your post. MPPT takes the "extra" voltage and through some kind of electronic "magic" converts it into amperage. I may be using incorrect terms, but you get the idea. My 570 watts of panels (2x285) are often partially shaded but are never fully...

    Diesel Air Filters

Backinblue, Check out Tony Athens website for some info on CCV systems. https://www.sbmar.com/articles/crankcase-ventilation/ Also you might find the following article, written mainly about his ideas relating to Cummins engines, but the general principles of what a good CCV system should...

    Solar Panels for multiple batteries

Paul, Sorry to hear about your issues with getting good advice and good work done from "professionals". I installed a solar system on both of the boats I have owned with good results. However, there are some things it is good to take into consideration when installing a new solar system. First...

Which way should a portlight face?

Tator, I think he installed them backwards. It does not make sense that the port would require going on deck to open and close! I have never seen one installed in the manner described. No wonder he did not think they "fit" properly when installing.

    Solar panel install

The white plastic pieces are a "rail mount" that are a standard piece available at most chandleries. I think they are made by "Sea Dog" if I remember correctly. I used them in my pilothouse roof system as well. They work quite well, and if used to mount the panels on a "deck rail", allow for the...

    why boat insurance sucks

Maybe I am incorrect in my thinking, but the Wynn's have more than 4+ years of full time cruising experience, crossing oceans with thousands of open ocean miles, and living aboard full time. To obtain just the same number of "days aboard", it would take someone doing 3+ months (full time)...

    Battery bank charging

CaptBud, If your goal is to be able to stay on the hook longer, not "murder" your batteries by not fully recharging them often enough, and avoid the loud, long run times needed by an A/C generator, then solar is definitely the way to go. I installed 2 x 285 watt panels, flat on the roof of my...

    Solar panel install

I had a different layout, but here is what I did. I used the existing hand rails on the outside of my pilothouse roof to support a SS tubing frame. The centre of the frame is supported on the roof, but is only held in place by Sikaflex so no holes in the roof. Two 285 watt panels were attached...

RCL Booking Alaska Cruises in April

Personally, I will never go on another Royal Carribean cruise. Prior to the start of the pandemic, we had booked back to back cruises leaving from Florida. The pandemic hit and they refused to refund any of our 2 deposits (even though they cancelled the cruises). They would only give us a...

    Waxing fibreglass hull

TorronaPwr, As to your "real" question. Yes I would recommend rewaxing the hull of the boat. Fibreglass needs protection from the sun, and an annual clean and wax to provide this protection is never a bad idea. Over the long haul, it will keep you boat looking good and increase (potentially) a...

    Is this legit to do?

I cannot speak to the boat market in general or in specific areas where there could be "regional" differences. However, I can relate my recent experience with a specific make and model, on the west coast of North America. I recently sold my Nordic Tug 37 listed by owner on only 3 forums, in 5...

    Waxing fibreglass hull

I agree with the others!! If this boat is a trailer boat, hauled out after each use, then waxing the below water line bottom is fine. Otherwise, an epoxy barrier coat with bottom paint is the way to go for a boat that will live in the water for a decent period of time. JMHO.

Are Yeti coolers worth the cost?

Like I stated in post #22 I agree with Art. Lifetime coolers are a great option for very good performance at a less expensive price. My wife made an insulated (lift off) cover for the cooler to help keep the sun off it as we left it in the cockpit and used it as a table for snacks, coffee...

Are Yeti coolers worth the cost?

Pete, Yeti makes a good, but expensive product. I did some research online (reviews, utubes, etc.) and decided on a "Lifetime" cooler (many sizes available). It is much less expensive, and so far works very well. It may not perform as well as a Yeti, (but would be close), but it is good value...

    Grey Water Discharge

I agree with you as well Auscan. No one size fits all answers, especially since "common sense" is sometimes not all that common, :) and/or sometimes people don't take the time to think things through to their logical conclusions. (too big of a hurry, in other words).
