    Hot Alternator

I just got in the mail my (COVID-19 and gluten-free) brand new 105 amp alternator which is a direct swap out. This should largely fix the high temp issue, I hope. I could have gone bigger, but I didn't feel the hassle of adding a 2nd pulley and building a new mount system was worth it. Looking...

    Hot Alternator

Thank you. That is super helpful. I looked up J180 mounts and got the info about the long ones and the short ones and the measurements of each. I'll measure mine and see what I have. It's a small Prestolite. I also appreciate the info about 150 being too much for a single pulley. You're right of...

    Hot Alternator

It looks like my alternator is just undersized. I'll get another larger one. I've Been avoiding it since it's almost impossible to tell if a replacement will fit my mounting system, or to know whether the pulley will fit on the new alternator. Is there a way to tell that?

    Hot Alternator

Thanks for the input. I know the belt isn't slipping, but I hadn't considered some of these other points. The batteries are pretty big for that little alternator. No, it doesn't have an external regulator. Great idea, though. I will get a shop to look at it and see if the breading is still ok...

    Hot Alternator

Hi all. Last weekend I took my boat out for its first spring trial run and to make sure everything I did over the winter worked. Once every hour I go into the engine room and do a temperature check with a laser thermometer. I've tracked all the temperatures for a year now, so I can tell when...

    Boat Ranking / Selection spreadsheet

I looked hard at every LRC for sale in the US for about 3 years before settling on one. I can send you my scored and weighted spreadsheet if you shoot me an email. It's in MS Excel and TF doesn't enable upload of .xlsx files. neildeb2@aol.com

    Are My 8D's Dead?

    For clarity: I have one house bank of 32vdc batteries with a Heart 32v inverter/charger. I have separate house bank of 12vdc batteries with a Magnum 12vdc inverter/charger. I also have a 3rd, non-house bank of 8D batteries, used to start the 3 generators (2 x 15kw, 1 x 4kw). This third bank...

    Are My 8D's Dead?

So, great questions, of course. I was being brief cuz my real issue was whether I was seeing a dead and unrecoverable battery or not. I have a Hat 58 LRC, with 2 battery systems - the original 32vdc, and a 2nd 12vdc. The house has one separate 32vdc bank and another, separate 12vdc bank...

    Are My 8D's Dead?

Thanks all, good input. I went out last night and checked. BruceK was correct, my heater pulls 13 amps. - I checked the spec gravity and all 6 cells were in the red. - The charger is a brand new ProNautics 30 amp smart charger with an equalization function, so I turned everything off and hit...

    Are My 8D's Dead?

Thanks; good points. I haven't checked the fluid levels yet. The only items on there are a hydronic heater (fans and recirc pumps), and a couple priming pumps. I first started thinking I'd killed them when the heater/fans would audibly slow by about 40% if I activated the priming pump (small...

    Are My 8D's Dead?

I installed a new smart charger in Nov, then left the boat for 2 weeks with the charger breaker in the OFF position (inadvertently). When I came back my two 8D 12v batteries were dead. I've been charging them since, but for a week now the charger has yet to go below 13 amps charge (stayed at...

    Positive Anchor Drag Detector System

Anchor Movement Detection I'd be interested in the product. I'm not in a position to invest in development, though. I encourage you to go for it. This is how great things begin.

    Log Book

Excel Logbook I made mine in Excel over the past 5 months of making short cruises with my new-to-me Hat58LRC. It might be a bit too much for many - I'm a bit OCD. It has a NavLog on the first tab, then a tab each for engine room monitoring record, scheduled maintenance, unscheduled...

    Curved Pilothouse Windshield Windows

Thanks all. I'm not sure that polishing will work, as it looks like it goes all the way thru, but I'll try it first (cheapest). If that doesn't work, I'll try looking for a company to make them (I just don't feel manufacturing them myself is my strength). If those courses of action fail...

Starting our long range plan to cruise around world.

I'm 54 and planning to the same when I retire in 2.5 yrs. This is our 4th boat, and we crossed the Atlantic once. Learned a lot from that. There's lots more to learn. We spent the last 3 years looking for the "best" trawler for our $ and range. My subjective experience criss-crossing the...

    Curved Pilothouse Windshield Windows

Thanks. I did contact them. They wrote back and said they no longer did them. They said the tooling and frames are obsolete. I appreciate all the input. It looks like my options are make it, try buffing it out, or go to Kel Tech in Tacoma.

    Curved Pilothouse Windshield Windows

Hmm, never thought about making them. I built a kit plane once that had me do that, but it was much thinner material. And i broke it twice before getting it right...

    Curved Pilothouse Windshield Windows

My '75 Hat 58 LRC has 5 "windshield windows": 3 flat-plate glass panes, and a curved plexi or Lexan window on each side. Those curved plexi/Lexan windows are pretty thick, like maybe 1/4". But they're slowly growing opaque, like a milky white, from sun exposure, I assume. Has anyone ever...

What Freshwater Pump fo a 58' Boat?

Re: Freshwater pumps Great point about the Galley Maids having lasted this long - I didn't believe they could be original equipment after 44 years, so I was surprised to hear from you all that they were, and that they re still in use in so many places. Thanks for all the recommendations...

What Freshwater Pump fo a 58' Boat?

Hi all, I didn't see any threads addressing this. I have a '75 Hat 58 LRC with 2 Galley Maid freshwater pumps, one as primary, the other as a backup. One failed, so I took it in. The shop says it's ancient, and they haven't seen anything like that since the 70's. A new pump is $695. A...

    We started today

Hey brother, I, too, retired after a 20 year active duty Army career. And we too, sold our home, moved into an apartment, and bought the dream boat for retirement cruising. We're thrilled for you! Sailor Greg's post is right on, BTW. I'd encourage you to sit back and learn for a long time...

    Preheating Diesels?

All the diesels I've operated (trucks, tractors, heavy equipment) used glow plugs. Standard procedure is to hold it for between 5 and 10 seconds, then crank the engine. Even my Cummins 6BTAs from the 90's had a preheat (if I recall correctly). I currently have two 1975 DD 4-71's. There is...
