A Brief Journey Up The Sunshine Coast

Day 3, Thu, 8 Sept: Pulled up the anchor and motored out of Hacklett Bay. Wind is calm, water is flat, and the sky is blue - it's a perfect day... Until we reach the Strait of Georgia. The Canadian meteorological peeps have the same malady that afflicts our US weather guessers. They forgot...

A Brief Journey Up The Sunshine Coast

The next day was, as forecast, windy. We were 2 channels removed from the strait, and still the wind picked up enough to create 2-3 foot chop in the bay. It was a bouncy day, but sunny and beautiful. We couldn't kayak or go exploring, but we used the time to read, plan, and do upkeep stuff...

A Brief Journey Up The Sunshine Coast

Day 1, 6 Sept. We're supposed to leave tomorrow, but the wind in the Strait of Georgia is forecast to hit 25 to 30 kts. We decided last night to go a day early. Deb has everything ready, and we plan for a 1000 departure to catch the tide push. Murphy strikes. That morning an acute but minor...

A Brief Journey Up The Sunshine Coast

3 years ago we bought our dream boat with big plans to cruise Alaska, the west coasts of the America's, and eventually the south Pacific once I retired. I retired in Dec, and though our plans for this year were thwarted by family priorities (our last daughter's wedding and a family reunion) we...

    Racor gauge education?

Applicable question to the topic, but slightly different. What are the small blue platic up-or-down "valves" (?) found at the top of the Racor gouges? You can pull them up or leave them flush. There appears to be no difference in operation...

    Stabilizers: A Must for Passage-Making?

Weve had 4 boats, crossed an ocean once, this is our first with stabilizers, we will never own a round hull trawler without them. They are sweet. ..

    Power for micro commander

Mine are powered from the starter bank. They have a set of circuit breakers that must be in the off position before starting the engines, or the starting surge will occasionally blow a small, 5 amp fuse in the control box. It was this way when I got it, but if I were rewiring it I would do it...

    Entering Canada

Are you stopping at a marina, beach, meeting up with other people orboats, or anchoring? Or are you just passing thru? If youre not stopping/anchoring/meeting up, I'm not sure you have to clear in.

    looking for an Eartec solution

My wife uses a sweatband over hers. It works fine. I've never had a problem with mine. For one thing, my wife takes hers off before she leans very far over each time, announcing beforehand so i know she's off comms..

    International Boat Purchase

I bought mine in canada. If the boat was built in the United States originally then it's pretty easy to import. If it was build outside the United States there may be some issues. I spoke with the CBP people at the Port of Entry I was bringing the boat into to get information on it. Because my...

    Lessons Learned

I wonder if this would be a good time to hear from various TFers on what emergency dewatering solutions they've seen or implemented. I've been dithering over buying an electric pump. My port engine has a complex pump/ hose setup that extends from the engine room to the bow, but using it...

Internet onboard world wide is here!

If you ever read Christi Grab's books The Accidental Circumnavigation, you'll remember they ended their story in Malaysia. I just heard from her they're cruising again in MX and using Starlink for school work for her son. Sounds like ot works very well..

    Generator impeller operation question, please

I'd check the hose between the thru-hull and the strainer for kinks, a blockage, or a cut (air leak).

    Wandering A/P

Thx. It's worth checking. It seemed (but I'm not certain) to have a harder time intercepting to starboard vs intercepting courses to port. Additionally, the way this sytem is designed, when the A/P is engaged both helm stations stop working. You can turn the helm but the rudders don't...

    Shaft Replacement

+1. If there was a strike hard enough to damage the prop and shaft its possible the coupling, transmission flange were bent, or even the transmission could have been damaged. Have you had a transmission oil sample done? Hopefully he has a history of samples to compare it to.

    Wandering A/P

So, I examined everything at and around the rudders, the A/P drive components (servo, pump, feedback pot, etc) and find nothing to indicate an issue. I looked at the compass, and from what I can see it's unencumbered and free of any metal masses nearby. I have maybe 2 possibilities: 1. I...

    Furuno plotter

I have a navnet 3d and it works great. It's the black box version, though, without separate monitors. I agree with the others. Furuno is generally top shelf. I'd call and get tech help. Their people are very helpful.

    Wandering A/P

I'll take a look at and around the A/P compass. This thing has worked flawlessly for 3.5 years I've owned it. I did notice the stand-alone wet compass differs from the A/P compass by 20 degrees. I honestly don't know if that's new or not. I've not climbed into the bridge helm and compared...
