    Unicorn Boat?

I know, when you're a hammer everything is a nail, but here goes... A Hatteras 58 LRC. 3 true staterooms, all with ensuite baths, galley up, salon, aft deck dining area, and huge bridge area. They're called a 58, but they're 52 at the water line. Range with the 4-71s is around 3500nm. Most...

    First setup

Just curious - does the design of that bridle not reduce its overall strength by taking 2 legs and reducing its major portion to a single leg of the same diameter?

Where to drop anchor when stern tying?

In Melanie Cove we dropped about 30pct of the way out toward the middle, which allowed us about 100' of chain. Initially I dropped maybe 120', then tied to a shore ring, then used the windlass to pull us forward again to 100' of chain. The things to watch out for are 1. Weather. A broadside...

    Battery Fusing

Ditto here what Steve (above) said. 2000w inverter as the biggest load, and a 300amp type T fuse.

Emergency actions when you hole your boat

Psneeld, good point. I should test it out. The hose is designed by the mfr for the pump series, so I would think they'd make the hose a quality product, but I guess you never know.

Emergency actions when you hole your boat

The hose I bought with my Tsurumi pump is a flat, firehose-like hose that rolls up to save space. I think the pump model is something like a 3.5HS, but don't quote me. The 3 inch hose is a quick connect type reminiscent of the 5 inch refuel hose used in commercial aircraft refueling. I wanna...

Emergency actions when you hole your boat

Has anyone bought a trash/dewatering pump as an emergency bilge pump? A few years back I looked into this topic and bought a Tsurumi 140 GPM (8400 GPH) 120vac trash/dewatering pump ($600). It can run off my inverter, though in practice I'd rather run a genset for it. It' submersible, and has a...

    Shift Actuator Fault

Not sure if I read your post right. Did you say you recently changed the xmsn fluid? If so, that's an area to consider. Was the right fluid/oil in it? Is the right amount in it? Hope that helps. A 2020 boat is basically brand new. The factory (xmsn or boat mfr) should be an easy resource.

    Re: Hynautic Parts Disappearing

Thanks for your thorough reply. Yes, it does have a remote reservoir, up just behind the bridge helm. I'll look, but I don't think there's a hand pump attached. I think the reservoir feeds the helms by gravity. You mention "...Typically the first failure of a Hynautic system is loosing...

    Re: Hynautic Parts Disappearing

Re: Hynautic Parts Disappearing After reading the thread about hynautics parts being scrubbed from the Dometic site, I took a look at my steering pumps (bridge and lower helm). There are no markings. I THINK these are hynautic helms, but no idea the model or type. Anyone recognize these...

    Shane VanOrden

Didn't know this. I'm very sorry, that's gotta be very hard. Do you have any circumstances surrounding his disappearance? If you know he left on his boat, or that his boat is missing as well, that info might reasonably enable someone here to identify his vessel should they see it.

    Transmission Cooler Cleaning

This (above). I'll take heat exchangers to a pro for pressure testing every 3 to 5 years, but I've rodded out heat exchangers of all types for many years, including on a pair of Cummins 6BTAs. I think it's a 1/8 inch rod. As an aside, I don't know that your overheat issue is bcs of...

    Narrowly Avoided Disaster

It looks like that fitting got knocked at some point. If it's bronze, could dissimilar metal corrosion have occurred where it's mated to the steel or aluminum housing? I've found one of the most valuable aspects of doing virtually all my own mtx is that I become intimately acquainted with every...

    Raw Water Gasket Sealants?

    Raw Water Gasket Sealants?

Has anyone found a sealant or something that will seal raw water-side gaskets? My DD 4-71Ns had the heat exchangers cleaned and the gaskets replaced 2 yrs ago, but within 18 months or so I could see salt blooms beginning to seep out at the top and sides of all the gaskets. On certain gaskets...

    Do you always check props/shafts?

I'm doing my regular haulout next week. I have no vibrations or visible runout on my shafts as far as I can see them in the engine room. As far as I know, I haven't hit anything. I'm considering skipping the usual shaft and prop removals for shaft trueness check and prop scanned. Do you...

    Polyurethane paint vs. Enamel

Ive used Petit EZpoxy paint on my bridge deck, the deck under my dinghy, and even my engine room floor. I'm impressed with how easy it was (one-part, pour-and-paint), how tolerant of prep imperfections it is, how nice it looks, and how durable it is. The engine room floor was the first yest...

    58 Hatteras LRC

I've had an 58LRC for coming up on 4 yrs. it's a 4-71 version, 1975. It's our 4th boat. It'll be our last. We LOVE it. I researched boats and 58 LRCs for 3 yrs before we settled on a 58LRC. I flew back and forth across the US and Canada, inspecting a bunch of 58LRCs in 2017,2018, and 2019...

How of 'get aboard' a variety of boats?

I second Banana Belt Boats. It's a great setup, and the broker's on site are there for questions. I must have gone there 3 or 4 times over the years of our search.
