    Fuel consumption

Just food for thought: fuel is likely not going to be your biggest expense with a cruising trawler. Maintenance, repairs, insurance, slip rental, improvements can (and usually do) all cost more than diesel. My 2 cents.

    Shaft Droop Math

Thx, Keys. It's averaging so long for each mount mostly cuz I'm working alone, and figuring it out as I go. Lifting the engine by hoisting it isn't feasible, so I've been using three mounts to raise it so I can replace the 4th mount, each in turn. Unfortunately, despite the fact I'm replacing...

    Shaft Droop Math

Got it, makes sense. And you've done this successfully? While I still have 1 more mount to replace (they've been taking about 3/4 of a day each) I tried pulling up on the shaft to see what it did. I might have gotten a 1/2" or so of movement, and that with a lot of grunting... I expected...

    Shaft Droop Math

Thx, good info x 2. I'll give the mounts 24 hrs before aligning.things. it's in the water now, so no issues there. Yes, it's a 2 in shaft, so your calculations are perfect - thank you. Ill weigh the coupler (hadn't thot about that) and add the 28 lbs plus the coupler, pull up that much, then...

    Shaft Droop Math

I've been scratching my head over this for about a week now. If you have any experience or expertise in this realm, I'm grateful for your input. I'm doing my first shaft/xmsn alignment after having changed the engine mounts. DD 4-71s on Aloson MH-30 xmsn. Shafts and props are clean, checked...

    Freshwater to Salt-engine temp inc

Im not a marine biologist so excuse my ignorance: is it possible there were freshwater things in the cooling system that were killed by the immersion in saltwater, and now they've blocked your exchangers? As an aside, a sea trial the resulted in that much damage would scare me more than...

    Standalone wx station?

ooking for recommendations for a decent wx station that works without internet (away from the dock). I prefer one that operates on blue tooth or similar - I just finished running the wiring for a 4 camera system and really don't want to have to do that again... Ideally a 12v display with a...

    Why not?

As usual, there are reasons things are the way they are. Turns out 12v vehicle batteries are low amp hours, generally down in the 100 to 160-ish range. They're also wider and don't fit as well. For the amp hours you get, golf cart batteries can't be beat. So I bought 4 new 230ah golf...

    Why not?

I'm considering replacing my house bank 6v golf cart batteries (T105) with four 12v deep cycle car batteries. Pros: long days on the hook without using gens. Cons: long charging times. Any other downsides you guys see?

    Newbie

Nikki, I second the recommendation to find a marina with a slip you can afford. Theu are hard to find. Then find an insurance company that will insure your boat. That is increasingly difficult as well. If you can find those, a boat will be the next search. Good ones aren't easy to find...

    Series vs Parallel

Soo-Valley, The boat is built for long trips, so it has the primary 12v house bank, the backup house bank (aka stbd engine start batteries), and a 3rd backup house bank- the port engine 32v start bank. This way you can hang o. The hook for a long time before you have to use the gensets (or the...

    Series vs Parallel

Been working on improving my house bank setup and realized something that I've been puzzling about all day. My dedicated 12v house bank batteries are wired to a 12v inverter in parallel, so the inverter has a lot of amp hours available at 12v. My stbd 32v engine start bank has four 8v...

    American Modern Insurance co

Iwent with them this year. Outstanding so far. Best premium, and very good policy. I questioned several items in the policy and got good explanations and one change. I hope they renew at a similar level this year. I'm due in March. I'll let you know.

    travel to the carribean

Back in 2003 I made that trip with my wife and 2 daughters. West coast of FL (Naples) to east coast of Puerto Rico, and then later thru all the USVI. My thoughts/opinions, admittedly based only on one trip, one way: - We went in June/July. Yes, that’s in Hurricane season, but it’s the early...

    Cummins 6BTA

We had Cummins 6BTA M3's in a Sea Ray. Loved those engines. The heat exchangers were easy to clean. Impellers were hard to get to as they were on the outboard sides in tight 44' Sundancer engine space (won't call it a room). I crossed 1500 miles of Atlantic water from Naples, FL to the...

    Detroit Diesel 4-71 NA

Also, I run at 1300 RPM most of the time. That puts me at 7.6 kts unless I haven't cleaned the running gear/bottom for a while... 1400 RPM is about 8.2 kts. At 1400 RPM I burn right at 3 gph per engine.

    Detroit Diesel 4-71 NA

With the caveats that - I don't have fuel flow meters, and - without genset fuel used, and - understanding that with 2390 gal of fuel and 500 gal of water my burn rate changes as I reduce power to maintain the same speed (8 kts) as fuel burns/water is used: My burn rates seem to average...
