Anyone going from LA/MS/AL/FL to FL? Buddy boat / Gulf crossing tips welcome!

Most people stage behind Dog Island prior to the crossing. I have always found people there to cross with (although we cross normally a little earlier in the season). It's always great to discuss the weather etc with others. They are always happy to have another boat join and most leave around...

    How small is too small?

After trying 4 different tenders (including the 11 ft "Sport' BW, we finally bought the Blue Water Baby. Is very stable, holds three adults (4 in very calm water) and plans effortlessy. We love it and we put a lot of miles on our dinghies.

    Free beer............

Welcome and good luck with your search. Unfortunately, we are in Louisiana, If you can make a side trip. I would even put you up on my boat. My folks are from Ossett, so I have visited your neck of the woods many times.

    Detroit Diesels

I had the 8V71 in a 46 ft boat and loved it. They are not the quietest or most fuel efficient but spare parts and mechanics are plentiful. They run forever but should you need a rebuild, most can be done in-frame. I really enjoyed mine.

    Greetings fine folks

I have lived in several marinas that will always say no to someone calling, for all the reasons you stated above. They simply have no idea who they are talking to. Try going in person to McCuddy's (you probably want to look at their facilities anyway). They see a nicely dressed, honest looking...

    Good source for Helm Seats

If you attend the TF gathering at FT pierce, one of the excursions are to a great salvage yard. They have seats and pedestals in great condition for around $500. Be warned, you will need a truck if you go there!

    Marine Radio options

The cost and ease of installation of an independent, 2nd radio on the flying bridge, makes this a no brainer to me. You should have a back up anyway, even if only a handheld, again IMO.

    Insurance or not?

Of course you don't have an issue with 'going' bare'. I hit your boat...my insurance has to pay. You hit my boat....my insurance has to pay? Liability insurance should be mandatory IMO.
