Great info A truely fascinating and well written article. Explains well the problems and thought patterns of the U.S. Navy Vs the Merchant Marine. Always wondered why the navy has so many collisions. Many thanks for posting it.

Navy Destroyer tee boned by a Freighter?

Gotta love stealth technology, probably slinking around with no active radar reflector. The end result tboned while passing ahead of a right of way boat, check the 1st point of impact and the impact then carried aft into the bridge etc. Sadly somebody lost the plot onj the USS.

Over the years I've probably had some dozen wifi systems on my boats from 5 mile wifi to alfa , various bullets etc. I currently have a "wirie" and it is performing excellently. They also have a model with built in cell boosting etc. I am currently in Trellis Bay Tortola receiving a signal from...

    Steering problem

Old hydraulic helm units... I have 35 year old Wagners, great stuff but regular rebuilds did't last. Checking dimensions showed little wear. Bought a set of metric "O" rings from Harbour freight. found seals a thou tighter. changed them for the old imperial seals and annoying misty leak has...

    Short inside inverter

Electric connections come loose in time and the connection may not have been as sound as one would like. I'd use the same and check all the connections. The fire may just have been a tad to much for the poor connections.

Glass Over Teak Decks... Good? Bad?

Sadly not the way to do it, teak is naturally oily even after many years, and it's always difficult to bond too even using astringents etc (acetones). I'd have to rip them up and do it properly, and fix the hidden gremlins that caused the glassing in the first place

    Bugs and anchor lights

Always had a pproblem with Mosquito's in the caribbean, About 2 seasons ago I started taking B1 Vitamin with Thiamine. Works great, and seems to build up in your sytem. So if you miss one daily dose it's not a problem. I gather it does not work for all, but certainly worked for me.

    Grand Banks Fuel Consumption

I've had both DD's and Lehman 120. My current twin 2715E Ford Lehmans 120Hp burn .8 GPM at 1800rpm doing 7kts +/- depending on wind etc. They are pushing a 50ft 50000lb Cheoy Lee. Always found it a battle with oil leaks on the DD's and heavy fuel consumption per mile. Bigger lumps in the boat...

    Crane Question

I made a "walking frame" and had my 15kw 1100lbs lowered on to the aft deck and walked my genny in with the frame and lowered thru the engine hatch in the saloon. I used a 3500lb Badland winch ($150) I also used the frame to lift the port engine to drop the sump and change the oil pump on the...

Staying With The Boat And Other Safety Myths

I have nothing but admiration for the USCG rescue services, They are incredibly well trained. But I believe you missed my context, there is a limit to the distance they travel and can cover. True ocean passage making requires a certain mental apptitude towards self reliance Sure if a problem...

Staying With The Boat And Other Safety Myths

My comments of "stepping up into the liferaft" certainly raised a few comments, but one must remember in the real world USCG resuce swimmers don't exist. Unfortunately in the U.S. a lot of "boaters "rely on them to get them out of trouble that they should never have been in sadly. I spent many...

Staying With The Boat And Other Safety Myths

In my opinion the answer is simple, You "step up into a liferaft" It's a well known fact that once you enter a liferaft your chance of survival has diminished incredibly. Not only that your placing rescue services lives at risk Unfortunately in my earlier years I've experienced 2 fires at sea...

    Unasked Liveaboard Questions

Well not a true 12 month liveaboard, we do spend 6 months on board each year. There are already some good recommendations on this topic. My own views are you need a fairly large boat that you can handle on your own (say 50ft+ ) in an emergency, but can easily handle with your spouse. When living...

New solar set-up after 3 months of use

Hi Bruce As the panels make the juice , it goes nowhere till its drawn by the controller. Most controllers (mavericks etc)on reasonable installations (1KW) have very smart charging programes which do the whole thing Bulk, settling, float etc. This allows the panels to be ("on" constantly). I...
