Starting a long dormant diesel engine

I'd check the oil for water and viscosity (two finger test). Bar it over to ensure not stuck. Make sure fuel cut off functioning in case of fuel rack stuck in wide open. Pull valve cover to check lube on valve train when started, Then hit the go button!

    DIY Holding Tank aerator.

That's interesting. I had copper pick up pipes in my last boat with no problem, They were 30 +years old when I had to replace them. I'll certainly monitor the pipe over the future and change it out when I detect corrosion. Thanks for the information.

    DIY Holding Tank aerator.

I recently added a 12v air pump to my holding tank. I used a aquarium / bait well pump, Air hose from the engine room to a brass flange in the top of the holding tank, Soldered a piece of 1/4" copper in to the bottom of the flange . The copper is "L" shaped and the end sealed. I drilled lots of...

    Holding Tank Vent Filter

3-4 months ago I installed a 12v air pump (think fish tank) to avoid odors when pumping at sea. Super oxygenating the waters promotes good bacteria ergo no odors. After a few days there was a slight smell on the vent area of the tank. That has now disappeared. So it looks like some success has...

    Engine room heat and ventilation

Hot air = thin light Hot humid = slightly heavier Cold air +heavier Better Cold damp air heavier Much better The tendency is for a engine in thin air say to replace lack of air to replace it with fuel to reach the same hp. The heavier the air the better. Think about how your car operates at...

    Engine room heat and ventilation

rslifkin Smells vs power and efficiency? I know which I would choose. I would spend the time to seal my engine room properly. If you think about it 1000 cuft in 500 cuft out with engines that if i remember consume approx 500cuft per min cruising. It sort of balances. Its nice to walk in to a...

    Engine room heat and ventilation

There has been previous threads on this subject. I did post a cat manual in the library on this subject. In my previous boat I upgraded my ventilation and reduced the er temp by 20defees F. The engines adored me after that (FL 120's) We were in the eastern Caribbean for 7 years cruising. The...

    Robust fresh water pumps

Over the years had many types and now have a cheapo west marine, par etc all failed, many failures of the pressure switch. 2 years ago I in frustration at a failed switch in a pump bought a mechanical switch on the "kiss " principle and installed that and everything runs sooo much better. I do...

    Dinghy Davit rigging

I had a similar system using the boom on my 50ft Cheoy Lee. I used the self tailer to hoist / lower the end of the boom. I made this into a 4:1 purchase. I then mounted a 1800lb ATV 12v winch at the base of the mast running the wire up to a block under the gooseneck and then to a block at the...

    Aging gracefully with a boat?

It certainly sounds from everyone, that the intention is to never stop, just to adjust to what we can achieve. I for one enjoy working on my boat, albeit I certainly do not move around as quick and preplanning is a necessity. I always lay out all possible tools, get my collection of foam...

New A/C Unit. Dometic or Something Else?

Ripped out my 35 year old central a/c and replaced it with 5 Marinaire units, 2 years ago and all operating flawless. I did the same on my previous Cheoy Lee as well . They performed well as well. Current price $1800 for a 208vac 16000btu unit. Always found great service from them and fast delivery.

    Aging gracefully with a boat?

I'm 73 and am currently doing my own extensive refit. I have been fortunate in living a active life and broken many bones. However i am still in reasonable shape. I still enjoy "fixin" my own boat, however I realize I'm no longer 20. Wheras I used to crouch and stand, now it's a small stool to...

    Tools for full time cruising

What a question! My experience is you cannot have enough tools. I think the question is in two parts. Where you plan on cruising. And your competency. I cruised the eastern Caribbean for 7 years. During that time I took my port engine out twice (120hp Lehman) The first to fit a new oil pump and...

    Let's talk deep freezers

I built my own fridge and a freezer in my boat about 12 years ago. Using modules. They cost me around 1K each. The advantage of building my own, was to use efficient insulation (up to 6") and make them as efficient as possible. The added mini computer fans keeping the air circulated helped...

    Trying to find a light...

Try typing Facon 12v 3" led on amazon.com. These Facon are the lights i've installed in my boat. well made low price and easy to fit or cover existing head linings etc. They are also low profile and very bright. I used 2 in my after head, and its like daylight.

Poor Man's Fuel Flow Meter - Monitor RPMs?

These Australian fuel computers are the cheapest I could find. Engine Fuel Consumption Gauge Kit (Single flow meter) I had Floscan on my last boat, and they were great. They gave up to date consumption in changing sea conditions.

    Southport Marina Sham

Sounds like the construction specs were no where up to standards. One expects to be "safe" in a marina and that's what you pay for. Like a lot of stuff in the U.S. Things are built to a cost, not to a standard. Standards are lowered to meet the cost expectation.

    Charles Wittholz

Hi My Cheoy Lee 55/67 Trawler was designed by Wittholz. Originally a Cheoy Lee 55, a prior owner had Wittholz design a 10ft extension fishing cockpit. You would'nt happened to have the wittholz motor yacht catalog scanned in would you. I would appreciate a copy if you could email it to me. or...

How to secure lead ingot ballast???

There are a couple of ballast manufacturers who make lead shot you mix in a concrete mixer with a slow curing resin. Normally you stack the ingots in and fill the voids with the shot and epoxy mix. normally we follow that with a couple of layers of cloth and resin to seal it in for life.

NOAA Kicks Off Transition To Electronic Charts

So sad, I and others still use charts to record long passages, and where GPS is nice. What happens when you have a melt down with a fully intergrated system? Ask the navy, they are lost. They restored their celestial nav as part of their training again. Maybe I'm old fashioned. My 2 MFD'...
