What do you use for Generating AC/DC

My 3000i is on the roof. Not enough noise to be concerned about. One More Time Around: 3000i As for the Northern diesel, it may have been a local sale?

    DC Amp Meter for Alternator

A bad battery can 'overwork' an alternator resulting in high alternator temps and slipping belt.

Before i start my 400 mile trip

The difference between an ordeal and adventure is attitude. I'm with Alemao. Get out there and discover what you need. All you really need is a boat and a lick of common sense. By the way...if you don't see a yellow square or yellow triangle on the marker, then you are not on the ICW.

    Tools

The tools you carry often reflect the condition of your boat. For us as inland/coastal cruisers, we buy a cheap combo set every couple years, donating the old set (with missing/rusted components) to Goodwill...and we have unlimited towing (which we've never used). WEST MARINE Shipyard Tool Kit...

    Tapered bolts

I think I'd grind a taper on like bolts and replace them one at a time with the real thing after the unit was in place.

Where do you go in your boat?

As a 18' trailerboater, we splashed at over 100 different ramps from Key West to Homer AK, San Diego to Block Island. Also a run from Lauderdale to Bimini. When cruising local waters we'd stay aboard for anywhere from 1 day to a week. We never stayed at marinas. Now that we moved up to the 28'...

    I have a dog problem

Our boat is dog friendly. PS - Merlin doesn't shed or get motion sick...he goes where we go.

    Prep Time

Unhook shore power. Back the van up to the trailer. Drop the trailer tongue on the ball and we're off. It's often overnight before we get to the water so there's plenty of time to get organized/provisioned while Wallydocking.

Time for new batts, should i go 12v or 6v?

I had a group 31, 100ah AGM battery dedicated to my Freedom 30. It gave up the ghost after 25 months. I paid $250 for that battery. The local Batteries Plus store said the 24 month warranty had expired. I needed to decide what to do. Options were: Direct replacement 2 12 volt batteries 2 6 volt...

Boat Selection Game - Round 5

I guess not a lot of folks have experience with 'home built' boats. So I'd suggest refurbing an old boat...like I did. After spending several family outings on Big Duck sometimes with 4 adults a two year old and two dogs, I can say I'd do the loop on my boat with wife and 2 kids. A fellow...

    AC residential freezer on board?

My expired 12vdc/120vac fridge ran at 28vdc no matter which power source was connected - so there is at least a small power loss factor with that model. It never ran well on 12vdc, even with a relay and #6 wires to the battery. My new fridge is 120 only and will be powered by a dedicated...

    AC residential freezer on board?

I continue to play with my Danby 3.2 Walmart freezer and Freedom 30 inverter, although winter is not the best time to be evaluating run time. Here's some bullet points: A chest freezer doesn't let all the cold drain out when the door is opened. By setting the freezer thermostat to max cold...

    Repaint or decal

It's so easy to have a sign store make exactly what you want on stickback and put them on yourself (spray surface with slightly soapy water, peel backing, position, reposition then squeegee, remove topsheet and final squeegee). Even 4 color work is phenomenal - I had a bumper sticker made of my...

    Sealant Shelf Life

I was told that 5200 cures by heat and moisture. Recent purchases have lasted far longer after initial use than the same tubes I used 5 years ago. I've had a recent tube take a week to begin getting tacky after application.

    Radar on the ICW

We've got trawlers on the ICW that need to see an approaching storm? What are you going to do, dash into the safety of the ICW? Oh wait, I'm already there. You're in the Bahamas and you see a storm on the screen. It's probably no surprise because you've heard about it maybe yesterday on the...
