B.C. Becoming Concerned Over Cruise Ship By Pass

The reality is that Vancouver and Victoria are high value Cruising industry destinations, even given a law that allows ships to no longer have to stop at a foreign port. I've been on a few cruises, our ports are more desirable than Ensenada, Catalina Island, Haiti, and a host of poor Caribbean...

Stayed Michelle Pfeiffer's dock - Bute Inlet.

I don't get it. If you want to "get away from it all" why build a place dependant on staff, cooks, mechanics, etc? Its the same with owners of mega yachts. Most of them aren't doing the navigation, standing watch at the helm, or not that much. They have crew, etc.

    Boat sinking off Washington coast

I'm curious why they weren't in a dinghy even if they didn't have a valise.

Other than not being able to get to the property because of Covid, what are the current penalties for a foreigner to own property in BC? I can't tell you the answer but here in BC there are many islands that are owned privately, the great majority Americans. Many locations in Canada have...

    Don't be that guy

I was that guy once. I was sailing with a buddy and his wife to one of the gulf islands from Vancouver. He had just completed a night navigation course, this sail was mostly in the dark so it was practice time. Problem was, the two lights he was taking a fix from (old days no chart plotters)...

French Creek - buffet for Eagles

Be patient with this video, the speaker talks like an old guy (hey I'm an old guy, I can get away with saying this) but I found the content disgusting (you'll know when it gets to that part) and fascinating as I never knew French Creek was so important.

Stayed Michelle Pfeiffer's dock - Bute Inlet.

I think the mansion and other buildings are trying to be marketed as a possible resort but the area, for where it is, is quite remote, weather is bad most months, it gets a lot of rain, its cooler than surrounding areas due to glaciers at the end and Mount Waddington nearby, and winds can be...

I thought I would add this piece of trivia about the area from Olympia to SE Alaska. This area used to be the New York of the continent. It had more inhabitants per square mile than any other location from Mexico to the high North until 90 % of the First Nations were killed off by smallpox.

Stayed Michelle Pfeiffer's dock - Bute Inlet.

I am curious as to anyone here stayed - legally or illegally - at Michele Pfeiffer's dock in Bute Inlet. By the way, the place is up for sale for $28, I'll be surprised if they get $5 million, crazy place to have such a heavy financial investment...

    Intro from a longtime lurker

What I hope you can address is why the old surveys sucked somewhat. I know they would do a survey of a small area then with distance between the two, do another hence the problems we have. But you can do a better job of explaining than I can.

Are Yeti coolers worth the cost?

Save yourself some money, look at the 120 or 150 Mariner Extreme Coleman: https://www.coleman.com/coolers/hard-coolers/120-quart-xtreme-5-marine-cooler/SAP_3000002458.html For reviews, look it up on American or Canadian Amazon, the Canadian Amazon gives them a good rating (1300 + reviews). I...

Divorcing the Wife and looking to marry a Trawler.

Not clear will you be living aboard fulltime, if so finding a marina that will take a liveaboard might be harder than finding a boat.

    Best EPIRB for 2021

In 2007-13, I was with the military in Whitehorse Yukon. We would send out five platoons to very remote locations. We were always nervous about locating them in case of emergency. So we used first generation SPOTS. We could track the platoons with the signals being sent out every 10 minutes...

I wonder if it will be like XM radio, satellites geared for the bulk of the population, but not so much for more northern residents. I will believe it when I see it work along coastal BC.

    Carver 440 Aft cabin....Looper boat?

I just did a copy and paste to an article I link below: In very general terms, what would you recommend in terms of boat types, lengths, draft? The Great Loop can be done in virtually any type of vessel, as long as draft doesn’t exceed 9 feet and height from the waterline is less than 19 feet...

    Intro from a longtime lurker

Welcome! I'd love if you could start another thread as to why charts, at least here in coastal BC and SE Alaska may not always be that accurate. I know part of it has to do with how the initial surveys were done a long time ago. I know the Broughtons below SE Alaska have some areas not well...

favorite top 10 harbor towns fun to visit

I know there is this silly little thing called the border and I know we are still in the times of the plague, but in my mind from Olympia to SE Alaska is all one area. Soon the plague will be over and the border is no big deal unless you have a law breaking record.

    Caution - Ports & Passes.

Well, almost trusting P&P. There was an article in Pacific Yachting about 5 years ago where the author relying on P&P's timing for a rapid, can't remember which one, but I think Hole in the Wall. When he got to challenging area, he realized the timing was off. P&P had either put a "+" where a...

    Sydney "sailboat" Explosion

So unless you rejetted your BBQ for NG all that will happen is the maximum BTU's will be reduced when using NG. Been there, done that, have the charred T shirt to prove it....lol. I am a Weber snob and always get the natural gas option at time of purchase. Unless for my boat. Then I got the...

    Auto routing

I don't mean this in a machos way like "I don't need no stinking auto route," but more I don't get the point of it - at least for our area. Let's say you are going from Coupeville to Walsh Cove on West Redonda Island, it seems to me to be pretty straight forward. And the only challenge...

    Sydney "sailboat" Explosion

I do something with my BBQ you are not suppose to do at home. First I use natural gas with my BBQ, not propane, but same thing only different. I don't like using bottled propane so for the last 25 years my BBQ's are plugged into the home's natural gas system. I also bbq almost daily even...

    Sydney "sailboat" Explosion

An explosion is something flammable contained then ignited and bam. With propane you are more likely to get a flare and burn unless it is a propane tank, but they so rarely explode.
