Want to add heater for this winter

Also consider Hurricane brand of diesel heater. Wood is good for a day or two of romantic heat, but a single source heat unit will not heat your boat, just one area. The more days you think you will use the heater, the better the diesel option is.

Long distance cruise with Volvo D6-350/Duoprop

The boat and engine will do what you want, however the fuel burn on plane can get expensive over long distances. For long distances, you might want to consider a more traditional trawler with a top speed of 8 knots or so. You will burn less fuel and the diesel engine can take a beating.

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

Out on a mooring ball, lots of batteries - probably lithium. Lots of solar, but not so efficient in winter cloudy days, we get lots of them. Also think wind in the winter months, sometimes quite nasty. We don't get hurricanes, we do get cyclones.. Remember all the commercial fishing trawlers are...

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

Depends on the heater in the aluminum trawler, how efficient and how well installed it is. I'm not especially an aluminum boat fancier, by the way I have hit a log with my boat at 20 knots, but for some reason the linked boat I showed you really interested me. I also liked the Kadey Krogen and...

    FG Over Wood Stability

Here is an article I found, link at the bottom: Is it OK to put fiberglass over wood or not? There are two dimensions to this question. The first is whether or not to glass over wood in new construction. The second is whether or not to glass over wood on an old boat. The first is a common...

Wood boat for winter cruising the PNW, BC, and SE Alaska?

Look at the thread "Difficult to find moorage.... at the bottom of page 3. I listed a number of boats for the OP, then realized he already had a boat. You might spot something there: [Look at the Monk boat, also I didn't list it but there is a Grenfell available, these are well respected...

    Total noob to boating

As a long time kayaker I think it's funny people think they are unstable or tippy. Your basic dinghy is really a jeep, good at many things but not great at anything. Its transportation, its good at moving bulky things, it can take passengers, they can get the job done but they won't win the...

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

I'd make sure I had my own well (if allowed) and that it had a decent flow. Its not the government or locals not allowing wells, its just the 1000 feet of rock you have to get through.

Here is Jeff Cote's video on Garmin products, by the way he sells all the major brand systems.

Take this question to The Hull Truth, it has a great electronics area. Lots of well qualified electronic geeky types hang out there.

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

I know water can be a problem. But some have used creative thinking. I dated an Anglican priest's daughter for about tens minutes many a decade ago who lived on Gabriola. Her dad had incredible gardens, flowers and veggies, around the house. He plumbed his house so that all the grey water...

    What happened to NWCruising.net?

The time and distance chart on NWCruising.net is much better. I printed it out and it went on for pages, put it in a binder and keep it at the boat. The reason it is better is that there are many more places listed from Olympia to SE Alaska.

    External Bow Thrusters

I like the Dock Star thruster for the stern but not the bow. I just want to press a button and not to have to fiddle with anything at the front. The reason I haven't installed a Dock Star thruster is that so far my bow thruster and stern drive pretty much does it all for me. I haven't been in...

    Total noob to boating

This one is a hard call and most won't have an experience in your scenario. I tried looking at big inflatable boats, then I remember what my 9 1/2 foot RIB weighed, and it comes in at 120 pounds. So a boat to fit your bill will be heavier, so getting it up and down is a real issue, and I...

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

I can't remember if I mentioned it earlier but if you are relocating to live then Texada is real option and you can join the Texada Boat Club (residence only). All the living is on the North end and you are quite close to Powell River. According to my banker, lots of big names live in the...

small boat - inboard vs I/O vs outboard

Merc is putting out new engines that aren't automotive or truck power plants modified or as we would say "marinized." The new engines are made by Merc, the V6 and V8 block are produced by an independent but Merc then adds everything else. Here is a copy and paste from a write up from Boating...

small boat - inboard vs I/O vs outboard

I suspect that outboard operators are running them at much higher RPMs than 4 stroke engines really are suited for. When I bought my first new Merc 9.9 long shaft (for my Catalina sailboat), I of course didn't read the manual, slapped the puppy on and away I went. No oil change at 10 hours and...

    Canada opens

Before American folks get too excited. I just saw a news article that says indeed Canada has approved it, but American authorities haven't. Until approval from the American side happens, the border will still be closed.

small boat - inboard vs I/O vs outboard

I have been told that every 90 degree turn of engine power costs approximately 10% of your horsepower. There are two 90 degree turns in an outdrive. My old engine I replaced was a 1995 Merc rebuild at 270 hp. What I didn't know when I got my Merc 350 hp new engine was that the way horsepower...

small boat - inboard vs I/O vs outboard

So I know I flogged to death this dinghy thing, the PNW and davits. Here is a system for the Ranger Tug, its not my favourite. Remember I'm an older fart getting older and the idea of man handling and engine around isn't my thing. My Merc 9.9 is over one hundred pounds: Where does the engine go.

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

Here is one example, I would prefer something a bit longer but this would work. On a Ranger Tug - solo - I'd go to the back and get on your swim grid with the transom to the ball. Then secure the line and walk it forward...

also a bunch of ones that are 120 volt with USB ports builtin. Ditto for me, but mine were slower charging usb ports, now I get the ones with fast charge instead.
