Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

Interesting trivia I learned from the Pacific Yachting article. The ocean is federal given over to the province to manage, this I knew. But the bottom belongs to the province of BC, this I did not know. So when you plant a moorage buoy, it is actually under two jurisdictions.

    Batteries

I have linked this video several times as folks ask similar questions such as yours. Its a longer presentation by Jeff Cote but you will be quite knowledgeable about batteries and boating when you are done. This talk was presented at the 2020 Seattle Boat Show:

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

near all the shops and tours etc.) told me flat out there is a 6 year wait list for a 30' slip. I was quite surprised as I thought the further N I got, the less demand there would be. First, for those in the know, Comox and Campbell River are the places to be for Desolation and the Broughtons...

Replacement Electronics & Nav Package - Considerations?

Here is a 2017 Vancouver Boat Show video I have linked here often when discussions like yours appear. Jeff Cote is well respected, presents often at the Vancouver and Seattle boat shows, has written many articles for Pacific Yachting magazine, and now runs an electronics and electric vlog...

    Mid50s life change...

You might want to check if there are governing rules or a governing body that approves piers and design. We have something like that here in BC.

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

The best ones for Desolation are the two in Comox (private/public) and Campbell River. The best time to search is not in the popular summer months but begin your search in October or November. I find that is when many move their boats. Ask if you can have temporary moorage for four or five...

    Garmin sonar problem

I am having the same problem. I am guessing in my case, when the boat goes up on plane, there is too much turbulence at the transducer location. It is located roughly half the length of the boat.

    Long Time Lurker.....First Time Poster

One strategy is to purchase a boat in BC. Because of the dollar value difference between the two currencies, your budget will increase by 20 %. The border is suppose to open up mid-August for vaccinated Americans to enter Canada.

small boat - inboard vs I/O vs outboard

The new Merc I/O engines are fresh water cooled and are not as corrosion prone as their old engines and all the other manufactures I/O engines.

small boat - inboard vs I/O vs outboard

Power preference is regional and usually for a reason. Full disclosure I have an I/O. In the Pacific Northwest, cruising from location to location is more a reality than anywhere else pretty much on the North American continent. One of the big deals is having a dinghy. Being on the hook is...

    My Experience with Victron

I link Jeff Cote out of Vancouver frequently here at TF as he is incredibly knowledgeable and willing to share his experiences with everyone. Thought you might enjoy this video. He claims that in on year of him visiting boats locally to work on their electrical, he usually finds only one...

    Thoughts on a Seapiper

Let me ask this - is there another choice, new or used - that is both trailerable and capable of going offshore like this one should be? Not really blue water capable, and I wouldn't consider this one that, but, with a reasonable eye on the weather, safe to make shorter passages? There are a...

Gasoline Engine to the Inside Passage / Vanc Island

According to the Slow Boat group (they flotilla boats from Seattle up to Alaska), the longest fuel jump is 85 miles. Your boat will easily do that. Don't know if I buy the 3.5 gallons per hour at ten knots. Most gassers on larger boats burn roughly one gallon per miles per hour. This is true...

    Deck storage ideas

I added two Coleman 80 quart coolers, much like the link below. They are much more robust than the usual Coleman coolers, you can sit on them, drink holders, and stainless steel hinges. They did slide around on the deck a bit so I bought the same material used in drawers and the like to...

A new “all around white light” for the masthead

Replace the whole thing with something that will go on and off with sunset/sunrise. You may or may not be surprised at how many anchor lights I see on at my marina. The light may be on for a month before the owner returns or in the off season - months. Take the lazy approach.

What kind of area do you boat in?

People in the east think we are biased when we claim an east coast bias in things. I can't find the West coast in the above survey. I think it must be true, as you get older your eyes deteriorate.

What does radar do that my eyes can't?

I think gear and location can determine equipment and usage. In my area of Comox, over to Desolation, AIS is of limited use. I have it both send and receive, but in reality when I am crossing to either Powell River or Lund then heading up, I pass all manner of pleasure boats (the occasional...
