    Finally Heading South

Glad to hear everything worked out just as planned, you certainly put alot of time/effort and money into that fine vessel, always great when a plan comes together and meets/exceeds your goals, congratulations!

    Dinghy Davit in the way?

We have ours on Weaver davits, which creates the same kind of issues, but our home marina has a finger so not an issue boarding and we anchor out alot. Times when we travel and head into a marina with only stern exit, we take the raft off and tie near the bow then dock.

    Active fin stabilzers - cost.

That's a lot of money for active stabilization, might want to look into passive, I read a few TF members that have done it quite successfully.

    South Shore of Long Island

There is no transient docking in Captree, its FULL of head boats and charter boats, not the place you want to be, plus going across in a dingy on the weekend is a real bad idea... Unless you are REALLY into lighthouses I would pass on it.

question: backing down on an anchor

I think it also depends on the boat/hp/prop's. Sail boater will back down hard, yet the props are small and the HP low, do that in a sport-fisherman and you will always pull out the anchor, so as others have said it depends on the type of boat etc you have.

    South Shore of Long Island

Cannot answer the question on water taxi, there sure do have a lot of them as I see them running all the time. One thing to keep in mind when viewing a chart of the area, what appears to be lovely nice bay, during a summer afternoon on the weekend the water really chops up from the south west...

    "anthem of the Seas" stupidity

Not really the best arrangement having ships leave from NY and head all the way south in the dead of winter, but there is a market for those that don't want to fly. With that said weather is not an EXACT science, yes much better then in the past. Want to lower the risk, cruise out of NY in May...

    Yacht Clubs

Ask for a copy of the meeting minutes, will give you a little insight as how the club is run, or better yet attend a meeting as a guest first. If you hear a bunch of people whining about this or that then at least you know what you are getting into.

USCG Documentation and State Registration Question

Given the cost of owning and operating a boat, I think this is one thing worth keeping up to date, if you need to sell in a hurry I'd rather have it them rush and have the CG re-instate it.

    USCG license renewal

Similar situation, farely simple process (and free) in the late 80's, then got to the point of special location for drug testing etc, like most gov processes they kill it with BS. I let mine lapse and that was that.

Yea a sharp edge on a prop will make it sing, don't ask me how I know that....

    Finally Heading South

That's a pretty good bend in the prop, certainly can see why it would vibrate, glad you got it all sorted out quickly, but don't knock yourself, that stuff does and will happen if you run boats long enough, safe passage for the remainder of your journey.

    South Shore of Long Island

Yes, but the Great South Bay isn't really the problem, it's coming through the Moriches Bay. If you are a member of a towing service you can call them when you enter the bay and they can advise you, I have known some people to actually pay for some guidance through there. Being an outboard and...

    South Shore of Long Island

Yes Snapper Inn has transient dockage, mostly for the purpose of those going to the restaurant, some nights it can get a bit loud with outdoor bands on Friday and Saturday nights, during the week its good, or anchoring off is also good. Never to the Maritime Museum, you will need some type of...

    South Shore of Long Island

one of my favorite anchorages is Connetquot River, right across from Sailors Haven, not overly deep 4', but not issues for you, anchor up off the Snapper Inn, there is a nice channel that leads behind the Inn and brings you up pretty far into the river, take main river back, the Bayard Cutting...

    Leaking diesel fuel tanks

Tex, you need to register and then its reviewed by the admin for approval and then you will have access, at least that is what I went through, found it a bit more difficult then it needed getting approval for some reason. I have been following along, have used Por 15 on cars I have restored...

    Cummins 330.....330hp....or 315???

It changed to the metric standard so yes similar HP, BUT the later 6B 330hp models were improved over the older 315 models, boatdiesel has plenty of info on that.
