    trawler vs powercat

yes, that sums up electric. a good choice for sailers moving around the marina. when 1 mpg is considered good mileage, it becomes clear that even the lithium can't meet the massive energy demands of boat propulsion. i've estimated that you would need to have 6-8 times the weight in lithiums to...

    trawler vs powercat

wow, that is impressive. 40' is a lot of aluminum hull for a 15 yr old boat at ($203K USD)? if i weren't a year away from moving on my inquiries, i'd really want to be following up on this one. if it were mine today, i'd be happily aboard, polishing it's entirety. but a year from now it will...

    trawler vs powercat

you've pretty much pegged me. i've been looking most closely at the under 37 fountane pajots. performance definitely not the major motivator, but performance in terms of better efficiency, i'll gladly take. the spacepus main interior certainly adds to it's liveaboard appeal, but the gamechanger...

    trawler vs powercat

just to be clear, i did say i would not buy one? if i don't have a clue maybe for thinking thst aluminum has it's merrit, i guess i'm in the company of the coast guard and alaskan fishermen, who have the most demanding environments. your best sports car is a pile of scrap when it hits a tree. i...

    trawler vs powercat

won't speak for all aluminum hulls, but in my opinion, the armstrong cats are built like tanks on the water. comparing apples to apples aluminum is double the cost of a fiberglass of equal stature. so unlless cost doesn't matter, that is the nail in the coffin.

    trawler vs powercat

inboard, outboard or any kind of space, i'm a mechanic that can pull and fix any engine blindfolded, so i can't share in that concern. plus, i'm looking at building a stand alone electric powered vessel, via oceanvolt or elco motor yachts. it takes a fraction of my know-how to DIY retrofitting...

    trawler vs powercat

given the choice, it would be an aluminum hull all the way. regardless of isolated claims, i don't believe there'd be anything better to hold up in harsh conditions and to also stand the test of time. not to mention, they do a much better job of holding their value over time. (believe me, all...

    trawler vs powercat

sooooo glad for that valuable insight1 maybe with your frame of mind 4 yrs ago, i've been considering the added expense and hassle of getting a steel or aluminum vessel in some of the northern regions of the globe; the baltic states in europe, alaska, USA, where these seem popular. after hearing...

    trawler vs powercat

david, you definitely sparked my interest in the FP power cats. the greenland is about the extreme in size of what i'm considering with a few other more modest choices in mind. i was originally looking more at 34' tug trawlers, but the shallow displacement of the cats has become a big incentive...

    trawler vs powercat

i think i really need to take a vacation in florida and try to charter, or at least board a FP greenland 34. i'll probably fall in love (a frame of mind never good in prudent decisions) still trying to keep my feet grounded, focussing on the long term maintenance and durability, something not so...

    trawler vs powercat

wow tad, you really sparked my interest with this one. i've never been a tig welder, so i wasn't really thinking aluminum, but armstrongs certainly look TOUGH (and that's what i like) i'm going to have to deal with typhoons from time to time, so just getting wowwed in a showroom over a much...

    trawler vs powercat

i've been looking at small steel trawlers, mostly from germany and netherlands. they build good stuff there too. we've both read drawbacks on each, so i don't think steel vs fiberglass can be answered without considering manufacturer track record? also, an owners intended use? my logic says, if...

    trawler vs powercat

currently i'm very interested in a 33' american tug. i feel it has the rugged, functional quality, that fits my needs; light fishing, short cruising and mostly living aboard. i've seen some wonderful powercats, but all leave me with the impression that they may be more boat than i need. perhaps...

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

simplicity in terms of no extra statesrooms, 2nd bathrooms, no flybridge, extra wash sinks or 2nd coolking bbq area. . . simplicity in terms of form following function of a utilitarian tug. i'm sure with a $200k budget, i won't have to cut out hot water. QUOTE=brian eiland;489079]I thought...

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

yeah, as of now, that certainly looks like what i'm suited for. the powercat route will get a bit more exploration before puting to rest, but that amount of boat to manage over the long run could be it's undoing. it seems the ultimate choice for a family that can afford, but i'm hoping just me...

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

i'm not looking for opulence. just all the modern conveniences of full bathroom, hot running water, air conditioning, electric, wifi, nice sanitary metal and fiberglass compartments and surfaces are what comes to mind. a mobile studio apt. anything else is a fishing boat.

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

i don't know enough on the pros and cons of powercats to give a fully vented answer. but what my gut tells me so far is, a double hull means; several small berth spaces, not me at all. also, the philippine marinas i will be looking for mooring will be quite limited as it is. adding to that a...

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

as i become better informed (a work in progress) what i currently like are the 34' ameilcan and nordic tugs with raised pilot houses. getting exactly what i want won't be possible by local purchase. i got time to learn all i can to accomplish my goal.

one thing about philippines is i've had some good experiences regarding theft. i find a lot of good people there. i'm sure i got some nephews that will be boat sitting 24/7 i'm looking at the most typhoon safe marinas, Atlas insurance and wil continue to investigate on that. there are no...

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

i agree pretty much with everything you say. however, my choice of going small is purely in terms of upkeep, and possible accessible to some smaller ports. also, a smaller, easier to manage boat may buy me a few extra years on the water in my old age? does that make more sense to your...

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

a good percentage of boaters feel your way. i, on the other hand, spent 10 years in an 80 sqft apt (8x10) and loved every minute of it. of course, i had the whole city of NYC, but here we'll have a condo a short distance from our marina. i go along with the adage, "don't buy the biggest boat you...

couldn't find grand banks and sea ranger in the low 30s in length, also i couldn't seem to come up with defever in 2010 or newer 20 or so years ago i'm sure i was the guy searching for a deal on a 30 year old, 40'-60' castle on the sea. now, this old guy just wants a 5 yr old, 30 footer he can...

Best live aboard trawler for <$40,000?

our condo is in cebu, philippines. the logistics and steps of having a liveaboard vessel in that area is a whole big topic of discussion itself. even though the country is made up of over 6,000 islands, my main use of my vessel would be as a houseboat. i may change my berths from time to time...

Liveaboard - another wannabe looking for advice

yes, correct 8'x10' with a wash sink, 3/4 fridge and cook top. although i ate out 2-3 times daily with whatever GF i had at any given week. these apt units had one shared bathroom with shower per floor. (if you stayed in a college dorm, you know the place) back in the 90s it was amongst the...
