    Costa Concordia

*From the graphic the news showed yesterday on television, it appeared that the depth went from almost two hundred feet to almost nothing in only a hundred and fifty feet or so.

    Paper Charts

A paper chart is pretty worhless if you don't know where you are on the chart. Neither is foolproof. * There is one tool, when combined with paper charts works quite well. It's called situational awareness. A handheld compass and bearings off of landmarks will help you tighten up your...

    Paper Charts

*My boat is only 36', but I do carry the hardcopy. I believe that it is required on vessels 12 meter (39.37') and above. As to whether an electronic copy is acceptable, I would guess that it is not, considering there is no guarantee that it would be accessible when needed.

    Snow Day

I must say Ken, that you put the average Boy Scout to shame with your level of preparedness. See you at 5 o'clock. *

Small Whaler, Small inflatable, or RIB? Thoughts?

Some aluminum skiffs do have foam floatation in the seats. Bullfrog Boats have bouyant polyethylene tubes (not deflatable), with some foam inside as well, and an aluminum bottom. I have one, and love it. They are heavier than an inflatable, but have a much longer lifespan. Mention was made of...

    Snow Day

Where have you people been? The number one recommended disaster preparedness item for the home is a liberal supply of your preferred beverage. A three day supply of water, and at least a seven day supply of bourbon is my own minimum, as I like a little water on the side.* Absolutely! A rule...

    Plywood swim platform?

*You could have one fabricated out of aluminum for about the same money, with ten times the resistance to the elements.

    Snow Day

*Much more civil up here in Bellingham. Nineteen degrees, no wind and no freezing rain. Accumulated seven inches of snow over the last few days, but most will be gone by tomorrow.

I believe that is what 911 is for.* Duh... * * Thank you so much Delfin.* In my panic I lost all perspective and could not think straight.* Of course a call to 911 would address the issue. Where have you people been? The number one recommended disaster preparedness item for the home is a...

Small Whaler, Small inflatable, or RIB? Thoughts?

Given the options, I have to say that if you plan to beach your dinghy on anything but pristine sandy beaches, I would lean toward a hard shelled boat. Honestly, if you are using it in a rocky, barnacle clad world, I would have to deviate from the selection given, and go to aluminum hull.* Left...

    Sad boat

Thanks Steve My first attempts were with guidance from a couple cookbooks i picked up down the bayou, but I used a stainless pan, and even after a couple hours of stirring could not get past a light brown color. Maybe I was being too careful not to burn it.* I will get my cookbook and your...

    Anchor Chain Swivels

*Here's shot of plane belonging to an airline we worked with a few months ago in Oslo, Noway.* This should answer your question. -- Edited by Marin on Tuesday 17th of January 2012 03:19:48 PM *Helps to define the doors for rescuers. I suppose.

    Adrift without an anchor, etcetera

Did you get your recipe for a good roux worked out? *Don Sadly, I haven't nailed the roux. I did buy a cast iron pan, giving me the right foundation, but have spent too much time away lately to really get back into cooking. I'm glad you brought that up. I will put it on my short list of things...

Holding tanks - where have you put them???

    * * * I have about the same situation. Utilizing the hull as one surface of the tank, four sides and the underside of the floor were glassed in. It works pretty well, but only gave us about twenty five gallon capacity.

    * * *Eric Print out the photo, and then re-draw the windows quite a bit taller, and a little longer, and it looks 100% better. I also reduced the trunk cabin roofline by six inches, and it now looks pretty good.**
