    Long Distance Cruising

All he needed for navigation was a little compass and to watch the jet trails going to Hawaii. Very doubtful you could get a meaningful sight from a kayak.

    V-berth configuration

If you make them properly, you can also add a centerboard and cushion when needed.

    Docking

Spring line on the J hook would solve that problem. Once you catch it and put it on your amidships cleat, just put the rudder hard to port and idle into place. Might have to have a bow line rigged the same way if the current / wind still swings the bow out too much.

    Anchoring Fiasco off the Keys

The backup system on my Ideal windlass is a SS rod that you put through two opposing holes on top. Give you enough leverage to wind it back if necessary. Slow, but would work. Thank goodness I've never had to use it.

    Diesel Fuel Tank Design

You could always coat the inside of steel tanks with aircraft fuel tank sealer when they're built. Epoxy or other coating on the outside.

    What's the best trawler show?

Solomons Trawlerfest at least USED to be the best, but it's been a long time and I haven't been back since it has new owners. Also, I enjoyed the powerboat show at Annapolis, but it's not strictly trawlers.

replacing a window in our Defever

Sorry, I forgot to put "tempered" in my comment about breaking into lots of pieces. Another thing to know about tempered glass is that it cannot be cut. A regular piece of glass has to be cut, then sent off to be tempered. This will add some time to the process vs. just going down to the...

replacing a window in our Defever

That's backwards. Safety laminated glass should face forward, and probably be used on the sides too. It is stronger, but if that breaks with a wave, you'll have thousands of little pieces of glass on the deck and a complete hole waiting for the next wave.

Bulbous Bow - Anyone Done One???

Not me, but all the reading and tests I've seen say it won't do you any good, nor harm.

    Mainship 34 electrical panel fire

When that happens you should replace both the plug and socket. The corrode and overheat together, and if you just replace one, the bad other end will damage the new one. If you want to prevent that from ever happening, spray the socket and plug every three months or so with Corrosion Block. I've...

    Propane Bottle Location Requirements

Not everyone falls into those two categories. Shades of gray, not black and white. Realistic and practical vs. strict enforcement.

    Propane Bottle Location Requirements

My very first surveyor split his recommendations into three categories, which made total sense. I've never seen another do it this way. I can't remember the exact terminology, but it was something like this: 1. Items which affect the safety and operability of the vessel. 2. Items which are...

    Canvas Color and Mildew Growth?

Never had a black top, but that color gets a lot hotter than lighter colors in the sun. Maybe it just dried out faster and stayed drier?

    door lock mechanism

There are easier ways to find the leaks. First, after a rain (or hosing down) look for the seams that are the last to dry. Good clue. Another way I've used is to seal up the boat as much as you can and pressurize it (or the suspected area) with a vacuum cleaner set to blow and spray soapy water...
