    Replacing site tubes

I used to use vinyl, but a surveyor said to replace with polycarbonate. Did so and it's pretty easy and lasts a long time. Stays clear too. Just use compression fittings to install it. I got the tubing at Mcmastercarr.com.

Replacing My Teak Deck After 47 Years

Where did you find the bronze Roberson drive screws? I use a SS version on my deck repair, but could see using the silicon bronze at some point.

    Window Leaks

A quick fix that works for some leaks is flowable silicone, which you can find at auto parts shops. It's about the consistency of cold syrup, and flows into cracks and crevices then cures up.

MSG poisoning ... real or hype ?

Saw a study the other day that compared caffeine levels of various coffees. Starbucks has one of the highest...maybe that's why it's more addictive than say, McDonalds.

MSG poisoning ... real or hype ?

I'm calling bullshit on this one. MSG is made from seaweed, and there are plenty of trials that show it has no ill effects. Umami.

    purified fresh water on board

I don't think so, at least from visual inspection. Mine is hull #99, 1986. It's not a big problem, just a minor PITA.

Rope lights - need something other than zip ties.

There is actually a zip tie installer tool that snips the end where it ends up inside the locking mechanism, so no sharp edges. When we use them for the boat parades, we always rotate the tail to the outside of the rail, so the ends aren't likely to be snagged by the crew.

    purified fresh water on board

I have integral fiberglass tanks. Over the past 12 years, I've scrubbed, bleached, soaked, etc. and no matter what I do the water takes on the smell of fiberglass after a while. Short of re-coating the tanks, I don't think there is anything else I can do, so I just put the PUR filter on. Makes...

    Fabric Guard 303

I just wash mine on the boat. Don't use any harsh soaps...I use Dreft or some other baby clothes soap flakes.

    purified fresh water on board

I just put a PUR filter on my galley sink and it filters the tank water perfectly.

    Seacocks

The first thing I did when I bought my boat was replace every hose that came from a seacock, and put new, high quality hose clamps on both ends, double clamped. I've lived aboard a long time, and never close them unless I'm doing some sort of service. As to the marina moving my boat, they...

    Personal Property Insurance

See IMIS Home Page ~ International Marine Insurance Services. These guys are cruisers and very familiar with live-aboards and cruisers. They have a Jackline policy which will cover your personal effects as well as provide liability insurance. I've used them for years.

    Another Day, Another Shenanigan

Shaft razors or line cutters can help. I also keep a full set of scuba gear on board. A sheetrock knife can give tremendous leverage to cut a line off a shaft. Hacksaw or serrated knife work well too.

Ouch! Are you going to splice through that area? Or just get all chain rode and never worry about chafe again.

Cell phone booster - recommendations ?

Remember that most of the mobile amplifiers count on the steel roof of a vehicle to act as a ground plane. You will need a marine antenna, which usually comes as an additional purchase.

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Depending on the paint, you can get longer times. I go five years using Petit Trinidad. Assuming you even bother, just get it towed once every 5 years to and from the shipyard. Let's see, boat vs. condo...no property tax, no association fees, no school taxes, no mud taxes, easier to move the...

    My liveaboard compromise

The thing that surprised me years ago when I first got a "big" boat is the social aspects. Once I moved into a marina, I made tons of new friends, and we had great times, both aboard in the marina, out on the water and even traveling as a group without the boats. I'd suggest getting your boat...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Great idea! The key is finding out the marina policies in Corpus. How the boat looks is more important to the marina than anything. There is one over in Port Aransas that is absolutely beautiful, and has been featured in boating magazines. The guy lives aboard, but removed the engines and sold...

Go to a pet store and get an enzyme based odor remover. Works wonders.

    Log Books

I log a trip to the fuel dock. Obviously not as detailed as a 100 mile trip, but hey...how long does it take? And I can certainly never rely on my poor memory! I made up my own logs in Word, then have them spiral bound.
