    Please explain purchasing a slip

Doing some retirement planning. Aiming for an ice-free base of operations and a 50 foot trawler. I’d like to hear from folks who purchased a slip, and those who looked into it and decided not to, and anybody with an opinion, really. How does this compare with simply paying for a slip in a...

    Recent rescue off Plymouth MA

I think the ages helps paint a mental picture for the reader. If this was 30 years ago, the OP (and the news) would have described these guys as Portugese, or Vietnamese, or Italian-American, but we don't do that anymore. (BTW, this crew looked like wasps). 70 is the new 22.

Boats like a DeFever 49 RPH?

Thanks, I’ve looked at the 49 CMY. You seem to know your DeFevers, is the 50 simply a modern version of the 49RPH? But with good things like John Deere engines, and no wet heads? The first example I found on the web was a 2008. I’d have to raise my budget for something that new, but prices...

Boats like a DeFever 49 RPH?

Thanks! I’ll look at some more MK1s. That first one had two more bathtubs than I require, the world’s smallest flybridge, and I see what you mean about the crawl-around engine room, although it’s hard to judge headroom from a pic. It certainly looks hard to paint, if you catch my drift. The...

Twin engines, prefer Lehman, Perkins, not keen on Cat 3208 Two staterooms, two dry heads Dingy on boat deck, not...

    A return fuel what if?

This is why I am looking for a walk in engine room. Easy access means no relying (or no excuse for relying) on someone else to do basic things like line up the fuel, open seacocks, check Raycors, look (with my eyes) for leaks, check bilges, etc. etc. But most of all, no sofas involved in...

You sound a real stand up guy. I may not want to hang out with you though, you seem to attract trouble ;)

Tow Boat US boards my boat without my permisiom, knowledge, approval and now wants 9K

Yes, contaminated fuel is both hazardous, and a waste if you want to dispose of it, so hazardous waste. The more common technique is to have a company come with pumps and filers and polish your fuel, circulating it back to tank. More work, but no haz waste generated except the used filters.

    Assistance Liability

I wouldn’t worry too much about your liability. I would worry instead about folks interpreting your account as “after neglecting my duty to render aid for over an hour, we pulled up lines, notified the CG and headed toward the disabled vessel.”

    Assistance Liability

I think you are reading too much into that last line. The plaintiff has to argue that you acted abnormally, unreasonably, or imprudently. The judge will decide if the plaintiff has proved that assertion. Most judges have boats.

Looking for Air Draft figures for NH

Congrats on approaching the finish of your long loop! The boat was the Independence, https://nordhavn.com/the-great-loop-aboard-independence/ The bridge was the 19.8' one that represents the absolute max for any GL ("Great Loop") boats. All they had to do was fold their radar arch, but I think...

Looking for Air Draft figures for NH

Thanks for the insight. I assumed the way someone would see my post is to look at the Nordhavn section, but clearly there are other popular ways to browse the posts. Plus, I am used to posting on THT, and those guys would never admit to any lack of understanding of anything.

    Man Overboard Alerts

A lot of boats have swim ladders that are deployable from the water, and I always thought that was a good feature. Does your boat not have one? Not helpful when you are unconscious but it might be helpful to someone on board trying to get a line on you.

Looking for Air Draft figures for NH

Pierre, great idea about having a laser level on the boat, they have become very inexpensive lately. For me, I am still searching broadly, so there is not an actual boat to consider yet. When there is, I will take your advice and do actual measurements.

12v or battery powered electric blankets

I didn’t think anyone still used non-electronic AC heated blankets since the big New Yorker article about 60 Hz AC causing leukemia. That was the late 1980s.
