A neat little trick you might be able to use

I have spent several days trying to troubleshoot a hydraulic issue with my stabilizers. We have decided ( meaning myself and two hydraulic techs.) that it's time to replace the hydraulic pump. It's a messy job as the reservoir, that has six quarts of fluid in it, first needs to be drained so I...

Just keeping busy on a Sunday afternoon

I was ready to leave yesterday but have developed this problem with my hydraulics for the stabilizers. LaConner Maritime was recommended to us so hopefully I can get in there early this coming week. Kind have decided to not go all the way to Alaska but just stay in the north BC coast area...

Just keeping busy on a Sunday afternoon

South of Heaven, I'm tied up to a float at a state park at Cornet Bay, Washington. This float is not connected to the land with a ramp so not to many people use them. But they are great for these kind of projects. Last season I spent many days tied to these type of floats when I was doing...

Just keeping busy on a Sunday afternoon

So what kind of things do you like to do on the first nice day in two weeks? Sit on the dock with your friends, talk about boats, and drink beer? Go fishing? Take a ride in your kayak? Oh no, there are much more fun things to do! Like lower your tender down on the dock, set it on your best...

    Need help diagnosing stabilizer whine

Civilitas: Thank you very much for your insight. I agree that it could be air leaking in at the pump shaft. There is no kind of clutch on the pump so when the engine starts the pump starts rotating immediately, but it is bypassing the fluid back to the reservoir at a low pressure. It is not...

    Need help diagnosing stabilizer whine

Martin, thanks for the reply. I changed the belt but it made no difference. After doing tons of research it appears that I have a cavitation issue, probably caused by a blockage between the pump and the reservoir. After looking at the system drawings in my owners manual it seems there is a...

    Need help diagnosing stabilizer whine

I have developed a whine in my Naiad stabilizers. It takes a few minutes to develop after they are turned on, and is quite noticeable. I have changed the oil and installed a new filter. Also checked for loose fittings and changed the belt on the hydraulic pump. Anybody experienced this before?

    Cruising Northern BC,bears & guns

As long as someone mentioned cougars: Two couples we know were walking their dogs on the beach at Blunden Harbor. The two men and one women were walking a small dog together and one women walking a medium size dog had fallen a little behind them. The women with the larger dog heard a noise...

    Marinas ...Boat sizes

Seems like every marina in the Northwest will ask you for the overall length of the boat. Last winter in Anacortes they actually walked all the docks with a tape measure and checked the actual length of all the boats.

    Cruising Northern BC,bears & guns

    Cruising Northern BC,bears & guns

Been up their a couple times on my boat and once with a RV. On the RV trip I took a shotgun with me but never removed it from the locker. Did walk with bear spray. My dogs will usually alert me if something is not right. On the boat trips I carry bear spray with me and I will put some small...

Where did I Screw Up? Genny No Start

My generator is in a sound shield and inside the sound shield is a fire extinguisher. The electric fuel pump is wired thru that extinguisher and when I take the sound shield off to work on the engine, I need to unplug those wires going to that extinguisher. Doing that also disables the fuel...

Question about sealing bow rail stanchions

If you can't get to the back side and need to use screws again, you could enlarge the screw holes and then fill with epoxy, and then re-drill for the same size screws. Here is a web site with lots of good info. Link wont work. Go to marinehowto.com

    Check Valves

The newer Rule bilge pumps have a check valve built into the outlet of the pump. They have also changed the design so they no longer get a air lock and not pump. I use one of these new pumps in my shower sump. Works great.

How many zincs are in a Lehman SP275?

My SP135's have anodes only in the heat exchangers. The raw water travels first thru the oil cooler, then the heat exchanger, then the transmission cooler. The anodes seem to take care of all three. Probably because they all have the same water source going thru them?

Hey Orca Task Force, KISS MY GRITS!

After seeing the hordes of boats, both private and whale watching boats, following these whales around the San Juan's, I'm glad their going to do something about it. Once they find a pod they follow them all day long. The same thing is going on in BC. Totally out of control.

DeFever? - Location of Serial Number or HIN

On our 1988 there was no number on the outside of the transom. The official number was on the inside of the transom. So I took a piece of stainless and inscribed the number on it and glued it to the transom. If your boat is documented, the number will be on the certificate of documentation...
