Diesel fuel starvation - troubleshooting steps?

You didn't mention it but are you sure that all fuel valves and return valves are open? I have bumped mine closed while working around the engines and not realized it until later. The engine could have run for several minutes with the fuel in the lines, lift pump, and filters while the...

    Sad Day for Northern B.C.

One day while waiting for the grocery store to open at Klemtu, we struck up a conversation with a man loading box's of processed farm raised fish into a large freezer. I asked where will these fish go from here? He responded they all go to the States, Canadians won't eat this fish. So...

    New Shower Trick

If the pressure in the accumulator is not correct it will cause this problem. I have had this problem in the past, corrected the pressure, solved problem. Research what the pressure should be, check it with a tire gauge. Easy to do.

    Zincs have melted

You may need to flush the system using something like Barnacle Buster or Redlyme.(sp?) They will dissolve those pieces of anode. Do a search on Google or YouTube. There are videos on how to do it.

Replacing Raw Water Pump - Westerbeke 21 Genset

I just worked on my Westerbeke a few weeks ago. The raw water pump does not have a weep hole, but the back of the pump is open . If it's leaking there it's because a seal is worn out inside the pump. There is a small screw coming out of the side of the pump that can corrode and start leaking...

    Where Were You...

I was in high school. It was lunch time and we were across the street at the Barrel Cafe , where you could get a hamburger and a coke for 50 cents, and smoke a Lucky Strike. Heard about the shooting and returned to school.

Boat build date and Engine MFG. date are 3 years apart..why?

Put a hold on the sale until it is figured out. I bet it's done in a day or two.

Mainship 400 Yanmar 6LY2AN-STP Heat Exchanger Cleaning

Plus next time it will only cost $175.00 and you probably feel better about knowing more about your engine and your capability to fix it yourself.

    Renting a Trawler

Toki is correct. No charter company will let one of their boats go out without knowing you know to handle it. You are going to need some training first, and it won't be free.

    Radar Use

I have ours on anytime we under way. It helps keep me sharp on it's use, what different size vessels look like on the screen, how far away I am when passing another vessel compared to what the screen shows. Another important benefit is being able to see a vessel coming up behind me since I...

Synthetic Blend in an Older Westerbeke?

Don't be surprised if the engine starts using more oil once the very high detergents in the synthetic oil starts dissolving the carbon deposits behind the piston rings.

    Westerbeke 8BTD cooling system source

Just finished some maintenance on my Westerbeke generator, 8BTD. After seeing the price for a fresh water pump, decided to do some research. Ran across a forum where someone thought a Mitsubishi tractor pump would fit and he gave a part number. Found one listed on EBay, and it looked like a...

    Heat Exchanger Patch

This past summer after changing the anodes in my Sp135's, I decided to remove the drain plug on the oil cooler (not sure why I decided that). As soon as I turned it, the boss the drain plug is tapped into just crumbled. I wasn't in port so I plugged it up with some epoxy putty and cruised that...

    Rocna resetting issues real ?

I call BS We have one on our 49 Defever and it works great, even in rocky bottoms of the inside passage, always resets. Would not trade it for any other type. That guy needs to set out a little more scope.

Northern Lights 5 KW Drive Belt

I worked in the auto parts business for many years. Take the belt with you to the store. They will have a "belt finder" that they can use to measure the belt. If it is badly stretched out let them know you need one slightly shorter. When you get one that fits, write down the part number in...

    Satellite Antenna Purchase

One issue we have had with the last two boats is the power supply going to the dish. They need to have a dedicated 110v to 12v converter to supply clean 12 volt power. After we installed that, no more problems.

    Satellite Antenna Purchase

We have a KVH system and located in the San Juan area. KVH uses Direct TV. We get service everywhere up the inside passage and thru out SE Alaska, but we loose all the local Seattle stations when we cross over into Alaska.

    What boat to buy

Had a 26 Tolly back in the early 80's. A real bugger to back down with that single engine. Figure about 10 GPH if cruising about 14 knots. The 37 sedan is my favorite also and you can find them with diesels.

    Heat Exchanger Patch

Sounds like part of the drain plug is still in the exchanger? If so, will it leak if left as is? You could use some epoxy putty to seal it off. No big deal not having a drain plug, just remove the cap on the end of the heat exchanger and it will drain.
