    Elevating Windlass above teak foredeck

Understand the concern about the pulpit option but have posted below as an example of what it could look like. This is from a very nice OA Mk1 (currently for sale in UK) so should look very similar to you. There are a few other pictures at: 1981 Ocean Alexander mk1 Mark1 Power New and Used Boats...

Can someone help Identify this OLD girl

Nathan - your HIN seems to be in the format of one issued by an authority not a manufacturer. See at https://www.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/10939/MR_607_Protect_your_Boat_from_Thieves.pdf The ADF is the code of the issuing authority (not the manufacturer) and the QT is a code for...

    Coming home

Dillion seems to have been the one who discovered the relics in 1827 and was told by natives that some survivors had built a 2 mastered vessel from the wreckage (and felled trees) and sailed away. Apparently a few also remained on Vanikoro but had all died by the time Dillon arrived. An...

    Coming home

Bruce - there's a theory that some (at least) survived for a number of years on Vanikoro – signal fires from there were seen in 1791 by the Pandora (while searching for the survivors of the Bounty) but were ignored at the time. Another one of those choices that on reflection could have made...

    Coming home

Nicolas Baudin (in 1801) was actually the bigger threat – he was actively looking at ways for France to invade and prepared a detailed plan for Napoleon to take over the colony. To complete the circle… Hyacinthe de Bougainville (a very underrated French explorer) was with Baudin at the time as...

    Coming home

Marin – well known and respected in Australia to this day. His final expedition arrived in Botany Bay less than a week after the First Fleet (though I think it is now accepted that he had no orders to actually claim Australia for France). The other historical “what if” scenario about La Perouse...

    Oldest functional navigation equipment

Newer certainly appeals to the logical aspects of it (though if 1 decimal place mattered for depth I'd be worried). However, there is an aesthetic element to all of this. I just like the look of old instruments. See the speed dial below. It’s completely impractical. It’s mechanically driven by a...

    Oldest functional navigation equipment

Good point about compass. I suspect I'll install a new transducer at first haul out because of logistics involved if it broke suddenly. I'm inclined to minimize thru hull holes so will likely reuse / replace existing fitting rather than keep existing as spare. Auto pilot is different - it is a...

    Oldest functional navigation equipment

New member, first thread. Have recently purchased our retirement home (Poseidon, 1980 Ocean Alexander, Mk 1) and thought the topic of the “oldest functional navigation equipment” could be interesting (for obvious reasons). My contenders (all apparently working and in good order) are: · Kroden...

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

AussieDoug - I was also able to register today (though previously had only got a web page unavailable error). Also have a contact email for someone in their marketing department in Seattle who may prove useful.

The broker for Poseidon was Grand Banks who also represent OA (in Australia at least). They will be at the Sydney show with 2 boats (a GB 57 and a OA 73) so it could be an opportunity to raise it with them. Bit of local support for an owners club would seem appropriate.

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

Beachbum29 - not sure about an OA, but last year I had a quote for a Defever 49 from West Palm Beach to Newcastle (about 100 miles from my home) for $US54,000. With tax / duty / misc expenses etc, buying a $US160K boat in Florida would have turned into around $AUD270K landed (and that was when...

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

Greatly appreciated. I'm hoping that Poseidon is more a refresh than refit (at least in the short term) but I guess we'll only know once we get into it. Survey was very good and the owner took it on himself to fix any defects highlighted. A walkin engine rooms sounds nice. Had spent a long time...

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

Aquabelle - if this keeps up people will think the old OAs are common as muck. Have been getting lots of advice from Insequent by PM during the sales process. Poseidon is quite original. Commissioned in Germany then imported from Greece by current owner in 2006. Fuel tanks replaced and...

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

Thanks. Will definitely keep the teak decks "silver" and the bright work looks so good it's worth the effort. I'm going with the "love at first sight" approach to choosing a boat. Not objective or rational, but I figure it makes the time and money sunk into it easier to accept.

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

Aussie Doug - some technical problems with the inside photos of Poseidon (will have to take another batch next weekend) but have attached a few below. Hull shots are from the purchase survey. Mine is the the 3 cabin layout with the second head / shower in the bow.

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

Very original. Will post some photos tomorrow. At the pub now and my skill level with these new fangled smart phones is sub optimal after a few beers. You should make contact with Insequent. He has a nice OA 50 that he is bringing back to Brisbane and is very knowledgable about the model.

    New-ish Ocean Alexander Cruiser

Aussie Doug - touch of synchronicity. I’ve just spent 18 months looking for the “perfect” boat in the US to import back to Sydney. Took a 1979 Defever 49 to survey last year but had to eventually pass when the flybridge decks were rotten. Had just about given up (the $AUD and all) when last...
