Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

After at least 25 summers in Ak. waters, my wife is done with passage making...:-)

    Double Enders

OK, but only one answer allowed (I may not have mentioned that) Regardless of how cranky the boat is, if it has a stability problem, it will be worse (and most likely to lay over or worse, roll over) on one of those 3 courses.

Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

Mindset, If your going to make the jump, you need perspective. You have to ready your self, you boat and crew for a passage. It's way different then cruising. The best cruising you could ever image is in your future, after a successful passage. But for now, your coming up coming passage is all...

Can anyone guess the course in a seaway with the LEAST stability? 3 choices (to make it simple) 1.. Upwind or bashing into it 2.. Abeam or rolling your guts out sideways 3..Dead down wind/down swell (Just received this pic from previous owner.)

Great post, I am VERY interested in you new generation Propellor. Did you upgrade to that? If so how was you performance/fuel burn/vibration/cavitaion affected? I did a similar upgrade on a 123' and the difference was astounding. I'm looking into doing the same on my twin prop 58'.

Live version: https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-146.94,54.79,3459 This is far from ideal as an example of what I look for to cross. Maybe best to explain what I watched for....When departing Seattle to cross the N. Pacific, I would have the lows or storm...

Whittier is so different (Kinda weird) you have to see it. A top secret Sub base in WWII because the cloud cover is 95% of the time...:-)

Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

I had to think about that for minute....yes the Date line is jogged to keep it in the same time zone. The entire state is on one time zone. It can get weird the farther west you go. Remnant of a past age, a phone booth in Dutch Harbor, all the glass busted out by homesick drunken fishermen. The...

    PEX plumbing fittings

Pex all the way for freshwater. My son plumbed a 95’ trawler. For Salt water every fitting failed, fresh water is 100% good.

Off the Market-65' Malahide Trawler SOVEREIGN of MALAHIDE $715,000

Your boat is fantastic, really, just over the top killer. Its a separate animal from a modern design, it's built with materials that are almost exotic and skills that may vanish. How can you put a value on that? I love a few wood boats, now that I own one. I would NEVER touch a run down wood...

Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-176.24,58.56,1316 I lifted this image just now. Weather is a big deal when cruising Alaska. Understanding it, and how it forms up, and tracks will help in many ways. I'll shoot to do a live face book or zoom thing on...

Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

The Alaska Peninsula and Shelikof Strait Kodiak Island are riddled with tiny villages and fish processors that are active in summer. They all use diesel on land and water. From Dutch Harbor west it gets skinny on population and fuel. Village of Nikolski would be typical, small, remote, limited...

Sorry for my absence, (If I start a thread i should check in) I'll get a big cup of tea and read the posts. Just enjoyed our first 6 days onboard. Getting the new name was high priority.

The wheelhouse is located way aft from modern day designs. Big bow, house aft, should give it a fighting chance in head seas.

Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

I will give 5 stars to Kevins post. He said it so well, and I agree so. Consider it the hero's path. What ever it takes to fill the weak spots, commitment, preparation, training, it's all doable. But its your venture, no two boats or Capts. are the same. It's so common to give Alaska 7 days on...

Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

Fun fact: as you travel west from Kodiak, the trees turn to shrubs, then disappears altogether by the time you reach the Aleutians. Emerad green carpet, summer time in the Aleutians. Fun fact: Dutch Harbor AK. is 500 miles west of Kauai. The last Island in the chain Attu is as far west as New...

Have read Joe Upton's book "Alaska Blues" many times (128 counted) over the years, figure 145 to 150. Pick it up to refresh memory of something and wind up reading it right through again. Joe wrote that over 50 years ago. A great book, from an era thats really disappeared.

Great start! It's like storybook destination. There are challenges and monsters you have to conquer to see the magic. There are locations you'll avoid most anytime, we can go over this. I'll say right off, my experience has been on 115' to 129' steel trawlers and crab boats. Our method of travel...

Interest in cruising the rest of Alaska?

If you're interested in cruising farther than SE Alaska, we could start a thread here, and I'd be glad to do a live FB broadcast (no charge). I've spent 34 years (28 as Capt.) Driving a big trawler over entire state. All seasons, to the end of the Aleutians and 400 miles above the Arctic Circle...

Depo Bay in Sept. this year. Much better conditions. I want to take my 16' Hobie Skiff out sometime. We are sitting at picnic table eating fish and chips. Pretty nice way to spend a day.

With a thread title of "double Enders" I can't resist posting a few images. A lot more goes into making a good boat, but the canoe stern has become rare I think.
