Yanmar Elbows - Do these need replacing?

On my Yanmar 6lya-stp, I replaced mine at the 15 year mark and they were in great shape. I think yours look fine. If you decide to replace, get the HDI version. They were great to deal with and they look really nice installed. Btw, the 4lya is a great little motor!!! -Rich

    Insurance doubles?

I just met Peter at the Annapolis boat show Thursday. He gave me fantastic information then reviewed my current policy. He followed up with a quote with significantly better coverage then my current provider and its 25% cheaper. Highly recommend! Rich

    Generator Question

Is it the 3.5kw generator? If it is, on the right/front side of the generator there will be a black round ish cover. Under the black cover there will be a capacitor that gets things happening. Common failure on the phasor and next gen generators. When they fail, you get no 120vac output.

    Mainship 34 trawler fuel return

My apologies Jim. I will go back to my corner.

    Mainship 34 trawler fuel return

You should have two 125 gallon tanks. Each tank has a return. On my 34 pilot, where the return line leave the motor(starboard side) it has a selector valve for port or starboard tank return. My return lines are near the vent line in both tanks. Rich

Mainship Pilot 34 Lateral Fuel Imbalance

My 2004 Pilot has a valve that sits on the dividing wall near the AC strainer/pump that lets me select my port or starboard tank as primary fuel return. It was turned towards starboard return when I just crawled in my bilge to look.

Won't fit in my Willard 36

I know you have done some pretty extensive work to your boat, but this would be quite the project for you. Buy the motor and build a boat around it? ha

    Stern Thruster “Thruster Tunnel”

Flex Seal. According to the commercials, you could build a boat with it. Sorry Dave, couldn't help myself. Nice to have you back!

    What’s this alarm for

OC Diver was spot on. On my 34 Pilot, it comes off the high water bilge alarm. Orange plate on left side near bow thruster. Your bilge float may be need some loving. -Rich

Swim ladder 3 step for Mainship 2008 trawler

I replaced mine last year. I got it from Butler marine in PA. They were great to deal with and MUCH cheaper then buying direct from original manufacturer. I opted for the stainless steel version instead of the plastic coated version that was on the boat previously. If I remember correctly...

    Yarmar 6LY-STE oil change

Not an odd question at all. Its quite the mess! I put a hole in my filter to let it drain out. I did my first oil change a weekend after I had my bilge spotless. FUN TIMES -Rich

Looking for recommendations on boat graphics company near Annapolis

This guy (below) has done a few boats for friends and myself (at Ventnor marina pasadena) and has done a really nice job. He use to show up in a bread truck with his fancy printer inside. He would create everything with you on his computer and print on location. It was great! His name is Mike...

2 oil dipsticks ? Which one is accurate

I would not go by the manual as that prompted my initial overfill. There are a few articles on boatdiesel that made realize I overfilled and not trust the dipsticks or manual. 14 quarts seems to be my magic number when changing my oil. I change my oil every season (125hrs or so) and I don't...

2 oil dipsticks ? Which one is accurate

I have found the short dipstick on the starboard side of the boat to be more accurate on my 6lya-stp. I fill that short dipstick until it reads in the middle (or a little less) of the dipstick indicator. After my first oil change using the longer dipstick, the engine started to blow a little...

    Abnormal Diesel oil analysis.

The high sodium could be from coolant or water ingestion into motor along with the high copper content. How are the heat exchangers and maintenance on them? Fresh water or salt water kept? If you are still interested in the boat, I would look into an engine survey! -Rich

    Yanmar 6LYA-STP engines

I did my homework on these engines prior to purchasing my latest boat with one. It appears to be one of the more solid motors that Yanmar manufactured. This being the 370hp motor doesn't have the issues with valves dropping out that some of the 6LY2A-STP (440HP) had occur. My 2004 Mainship...

I'm not an electrician, but I'm not stupid either...

I had a go fast boat many years ago before kids and when I would run the boat and use the trim tabs at the same time (one at a time was fine) the fuse for the trim tabs, stereo and lights would blow. I found a schematic for the boat and figured its an easy fix as something is spliced together...

I'm not an electrician, but I'm not stupid either...

I am a master electrician, and I constantly shake my head at the electrical work on my boat. In the real world, bundling is a big no no as the wiring can not breathe and dissipate heat. Low voltage and high voltage cabling MUST be separated for a multitude of reasons. On my mainship, there is...

    Mainship Pilot swim platform

Dave, The boat was surveyed on August 23rd 2020 just before we signed away part of our kids college funds buying this boat. The moisture readings on the transom and around through hulls never went above 35. I'm a preventative maintenance junky and what started as an easy re-bed of something...

    Mainship Pilot swim platform

Dave, I made cardboard templates today of the stanchion mount bolt pattern and dropped it off to have stainless steel backer plates made (8" x 4"x 3/16). I pulled all the screws out of the supports and will give it a month or so to hopefully dry out before I 5200 everything back together. I...
