New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

Thanks, these look really nice and tick a bunch of boxes, Yacht World seems to have quite the selection and prices seem reasonable at first glance. I'll look into further.

New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

This I am giving a lot of thought. Right now I am not retired and gladly pay to have things done I could do if I had the time or desire. I recently paid detailer to wash/wax our 21' fiberglass RV. I could have easily done it but honestly, I still work and am really protective of my free time...

Very nice boat but a fly bridge we definitely need and a little bigger. Some of the bigger tugs might work well.

I am in VA but we are getting close to steelhead fishing season in the Lake Erie Tributaries, so I go by Pittsburg often, I may take you up on your generous offer. Thank you

    Nordhavn alternatives

@sharked: We are in same spot as you. We are looking to cruise east coast, Gulf, and the Islands, and maybe great loop. A smaller Nordhavn I think would fit us well but we need a fly bridge so I think the N41 is out, plus for first boat we would not want to spend the $750k+. Love Nordhavn but...

Cost to refinish teak on GB

What is estimated cost to have the teak on a 36 or 42 GB refinished and how often would it need to be done if boat kept in SE? Thanks

Thank you, our goal to purchase is next summer but if I get up your way I will definitely give a shout. The 42' I think would be great size for us.

    Amphibious Luxury RV

Could you imagine the pucker factor first time driving this into water waiting to see if it actually floats?

Very basic and stoopit questions about costs...

Good thread This is excellent thread that should be pinned to top, each post had great info and in totality is perfect for newbe looking at cost to own/operate a boat. I spend a lot of time thinking about this. We can afford the purchase price of a new or used boat much bigger and glitzery...

    Insurance Update

Since we are looking for first boat, if insurance requires we take captain training does that mean we have no coverage while boat is in slip before completing training, or is boat insured but not when driven by us? Thanks,

Definitely a risk is now comparing everything else to the 47. Another couple was on board looking to upgrade from a 42, I think they mention having 36-42's so to them I am sure less daunting a jump.

New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

OP here, just wanted to give a quick update to a trip I took yesterday to look at a Nordhavn 47 and Ranger Tug....I know two totally different boats, but hey... I am just learning...LOL I'll keep it short. The Ranger was a 2018 27' and while I knew it would be too small for our needs, the step...

Throwing a wake and those buzzing bass boats

There is a special place in hades for people that fish over beds....and then to release far away from bed is not only cruel but hurts future populations so they are only hurting the local fisherman and women.

Throwing a wake and those buzzing bass boats

"What seemed odd to me is that they made no attempt whatsoever to slow down, quarter the wave or just scoot around the wake entirely. Going airborne just din't seem to phase them." If the Bass boats were in tourney then covering ground and getting to spots first is of HUGE importance....getting...

New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

With wife I think we will stay at marinas often but not always. By self I would prefer to anchor out. I have watched too many Youtube videos of failed dockings to not appreciate the importance of doing it correctly. That said, bow and stern thrusters are a must have, and if I go with outboard...

New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

90/10 rule makes sense. For me 90% with someone but I do like to explore on my own, currently have RV that I travel with all the time to fish alone. Life's too short to be watching from sidelines.

New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

Incredibly just today I found a 34 w/ fly bridge within 90 minutes of me that is under contract with at least one full cash offer w/ deposit backup and several other interested parties. Tug sold significantly more than owner paid several years ago...market red hot right now.

New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

Thanks all, it sounds like it could be done with trawler in this size but easier on tug, with correct training and coaching and backup help available. I mentioned Ranger but I am open to others. the only issue with tugs were more narrow beam and lighter weight. Maybe larger tug answer...hmmmm...

New gent looking at trawlers to retire in....

Hello all, I've been lurking her for awhile but finally ready to register and I don't think I can contribute much since I am new to boating but over time maybe that will change. My first question out of the box is, what size trawler could someone fairly new to trawlers be able to operate single...
