    Bluechip's 2016 Winter Adventure

Day 1 With the boat shipshape, the car safely stored away and light winds forecast we enjoyed a late start to ride the tide through main passage from Marina Mirage to Horseshoe Bay . Trip took about 4 hours to cover the 33 miles and was uneventful other than the crazy qld boaters rushing home...

    Getting closer

After few months in Moreton Bay and the Broadwater we start the trek north tomorrow from Marina Mirage to the Whitsundays and perhaps Townsville. First stop Horseshoe Bay, then Mooloolaba, Sandy Straits, and Pancake Creek should take of the next few weeks! Clipper put in a cocktail party to...

    Flexible solar panels

Thanks Bruce, They are lovely boats and very good in not so nice weather. In regard to flex panels they can be attached direct to the deck however as panel temperature climbs output falls. I went for flex to keep a low profile and avoid the weight of glass. Buying cheap panels was a mistake but...

    Flexible solar panels

Thanks Peter, we have been pleased with our Clipper and we have been on board full time for 7 months total. Aways would be nice to have a bigger boat but with that comes bigger $$!!

    Flexible solar panels

Benn, Victron 100/50 with Bluetooth about $540 total. Outback marine price matched an Australian on line seller. Interesting to see amps in real time.

    Flexible solar panels

Hi Peter, agree, there was no need to sika them down. Your idea would have saved me a few dollars on the removal!

    Flexible solar panels

Yes, glued down with tons of sika, needed a hammer and chisel to lift them! Just as well they were all useless! Took about 3 hours to get them off the roof then the parts not covered by the new panels needed to be cleaned up ?

    Flexible solar panels

Average consumption during awake hours is about 18/20 amps per hour and sleeping 10/15 so we get thru 400/440 amps a day. If we get 150/180 from the solar it brings genset time back to around 2.5 hours per day which which we need for hot water and water making anyway. Pretty pleased with the...

    Flexible solar panels

Hi, 2 X 345 watt sunpower panels through victron 50/100 mppt regulator. Attached is a photo of the power inputs with yesterday showing 2.62 kWh, my understanding is a kWh is approx 83 amps. We lose a lot of sun because of our sat and radar dome. Benn, good to see your flex panels are still good!

    Flexible solar panels

Great solar day today, loving the new setup, 2.62 kW today which is around 200 amps!

    Semi-flexible solar panel install

My flexible solar panels are in the dumpster replaced by two 345 watt panels running through a victron mppt controller. Our results on anchor depend a bit on wind direction as the sat dome and radar shade the panels. Best day 2.64 kW, peak Amps 36 with voltages around 55. All very professionally...

    Flexible solar panels

Panels coming off today, even the one that was producing 17 volts is delivering only 400 milliamperes. As well as blisters in the panel surface the junction boxes have leaked and look burnt. Flex solar panels from camp sales.com.au , just don't. At the same time the wooden floor in my tender are...

    Engine checks under way

Two motors, raw water alarms, full electronic instruments with alarms and an engine room camera allowing for constant real time monitoring. Much better than crawling into the engine room whilst under way.

    Semi-flexible solar panel install

Sun-power X 21, 57 volts, long warranty, salt resistant and about 1.6 m X 1.1 m , weighs 18kg. Having one big panel reduces the number of connections too! Don't know price yet, was a bit beyond caring!

    Semi-flexible solar panel install

Two of my three 120 watt flex panels were totally dead meaning no output at all. Going glass with a single 345 watt panel, no trust in flexible panels now.

    Flexible solar panels

Electrician has been, of my 3 rooftop panels 2 are dead meaning no output to the mppt controller. Replacing them with single 345 watt glass sunpower panel and fitting a separate controller for the 2 80 watt boat deck panels. At the same time the cable size from the controller to the batteries...

    Semi-flexible solar panel install

Great thread, my three cheap 120 watt flexible solar panels mounted on a rigid fly bridge roof are not producing any amps. Electrician due Monday to try and isolate the problem. I went with flex panels to keep the weight down but if they need replacing I think glass will be the answer.
  20. Hickers

    Flexible solar panels

Hi Brian, yes we are going to stay with flexible as I don't want the 30kg of weight on the flybridge roof, I think I will try solar4rvs who use sun power cells and offer a three year warranty, they are also the distributors of Soliban panels but that's $2000 v $1000. Now I just need an...

    Flexible solar panels

18 months ago we fitted 3 flexible 120 watt solar panels purchased on line from campsalesau, a NSW based business. The panels were cheap at $250 each but as is often the case you get what you pay for and the panels are producing about 3 amps between them. Campsalesau have demonstrated no...

    Getting closer

Hi Peter, we headed straight from Mooloolaba to the top of Moreton and then ran down the west coast hoping for some shelter from the wind but no joy as it was southerly all the way and the infamous chop was not much fun! We were heading for The Gutter but it was blown out so around to Myora for...

    Getting closer

Left Mooloolaba this morning for Myora then onto Raby Bay tomorrow for 4 weeks. Was a very bumpy trip with winds gusting over 30 knots and a lumpy and confused seas. I though Bluechip was a submarine there was so much spray around! Ended up taking us 6 hours for the trip with the only casualties...
