How do you wash dishes and pans?

So, no kidding. Does anyone put their dishes in a mesh bag and hang them overboard to let the salt water creatures pre clean them? It seems like all you would have to do is give them a light washing after that.

I have a feeling that you are not going to be having anyone over for dinner anymore.

How do you wash dishes and pans?

Does anybody here hang their dishes over the side in a mesh bag to "pre-wash"? If the dishes came out of the water in the marina at least looking clean, would they be sanitary enough to eat off of with a light freshwater rinse?

How do you wash dishes and pans?

Since the sinks on most boats are too small to put the dishes in, how do you wash your dishes and pans on your boat?

    Just a Floating Apartment?

You guys are better than going to see a psychologist. You are right. I don't want to buy a trawler to go boating in. I want to be free to go fishing and sailing on boats that I wouldn't really want to live on. I just want to live on the water in something that isn't going to tie me down, for...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Seriously! If I could buy a home for $25k and live in it for as little maintenance as that, I would be crazy not to do it. A guy could put away a pretty good nest egg living like that, and have a pretty good time in the process! One thing I haven't mentioned is the fact that I am retired...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

So if I bought a boat for $50,000, I might pay as much as $5,000 per year on maintenance? Wow, that is a lot! If that is paid in addition to marina fees, you are getting close to the mortgage of a moderately priced house quickly.

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Here is an example of a condo on the water in Corpus Christi, with sale pending of $110K. Corpus Christi Texas Homes for Sale & Corpus Christi Real Estate - Zillow 1 bed, 1 bath, no garage, 3rd floor. Ain't much. You can see the channel, but not the bay, and can't actually touch the...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

A really NICE trawler can be had for $75k. It would cost at least double that for a marginal condo with a view, but no actual access to the water. And that view would be only of a channel, not the actual bay. But, on the other hand, in ten years, the condo would be worth more than you...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

I was an officer in the navy many years ago. I only lived aboard ship while we were on deployment. Otherwise, I lived in an apartment when the ship was in port. I don't think that living on a trawler or houseboat would even compare with being onboard a naval vessel. I shared a stateroom with...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Speaking of lifestyle, I will continue to hold a professional white collar job. How many liveaboards work professional jobs? Are most liveaboards retired? I know a couple that had a financial setback a few years ago and wound up living with their two children in a fifth wheel RV for several...

    Newbie question

That doesn't pose a problem as long as the whales are at least three miles out. If a whale tied up next to you in the marina and did this, it would definitely pose a problem, especially of this whale used toilet paper!

Am I correct in saying that a boat is supposed to be taken out of the water every two years to have the bottom painted? How does he accomplish this?

A lot of those house boats look like someone just built a house on top of a barge. Now, that gives me an idea. Buy a barge and an old pier and beam house and set the house on the barge. When the barge is ready to sink, buy another barge and move the house onto it.

    Just a Floating Apartment?

That is a neat looking house! It wouldn't bother me all that much if I couldn't take the house out for the day. As stated earlier, I have access to other boats already. I just like the idea of a home with a view and shoreline homes are way out of my price range.

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Maybe I am going too far in asking about a boat that will not get underway. Once I look at a few boats, trawlers and houseboats, I am sure it will be more clear. The cost of buying a boat seems straightforward enough. The cost of parking in a marina is clear. But, other than that, what is...

I hope I did not say anything that may have been misunderstood to imply that I was not going to do the required maintenance.

    Just a Floating Apartment?

The houseboats may be more practical for what I want to do, but those trawlers sure look better! I want to use my weekends for fishing from a motor boat, sailing, and sea kayaking. I have access to each without having to buy a boat. How practical it is to buy a house boat depends entirely...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Well, then maybe it is not all that good of an idea. I can see how marinas could wind up looking like a trashed out trailer park if things like this weren't kept under control.

OFB, How big was that boat and how much did it sell for? This is exactly what I was initially asking about, although I will still look at house boats.

In that case I will look for a good houseboat. Has anybody ever heard of someone renting a liveaboard to try it out before actually buying?

    Just a Floating Apartment?

I can easily see the first time cost. The big unknown is the cost of ownership. If I bought a fully functioning vessel, the first time cost would obviously be higher. But, would the cost of ownership be higher, even if you don't count the cost of fuel, assuming that I don't go anywhere. If...

    Just a Floating Apartment?

To be honest, I wasn't looking for a boat to put a lot of time and money into. I wondered if it was possible to buy an inexpensive boat that was comfortable to live in but would never actually get underway. Not a fixer upper. A leave it as it is.

    Just a Floating Apartment?

Is a houseboat seaworthy enough for Corpus Christi Bay or the ICW? I never thought of that. I thought a trawler was the best option. I know that I can get a sailboat for a good deal, but a trawler would have so much more space. I guess a houseboat would have a lot of space, but thought they...
