    Wind Turbine

thanks for the video, great way to produce energy for sure. i have heard of a new type wind turbine called a windspire or windsphire. here is a shot of it, apparently very city friendly and efficient. i could imagine a similar design would do well on a boat.

The little parasite in the bilge

ok, you could also just isolate one battery then, to use only for emergency starting. by example, my engine batts consist of 2 x 8D agm batts, a bit overkill imho, considering to re-wire one of them to include on the house side. opinions? but indeed "stuff happens"

What happened? House batts went dead

well, i have learned a lot about my electric system.. finally i called bluesea system and now i understand.. when the banks are being depleted, volt is going under 12.75 (both banks combined), the acr will isolate. if between 10.8 and 12.75 Volt a charging source is detected for 30 secs or 120...

The little parasite in the bilge

so i am going out on a limb here.. why would you need a separate genset starting battery? could you not start the genny from the engine batts? what would be wrong with this.

    alternator problem?

i think some alternators also are tied in with the tachometer and transmit the rpm to the instrument gauges. so if his rpm went to zero, it could mean there is something wrong, the alternator is not spinning or if it spinning there must be some internal problem with the unit.

What happened? House batts went dead

i cant say if the house batts was at 10.8 or under, just according to the blue sea folks thats when the ACR lockout the two batts.. sounds to me like perhaps they should have set that threshold slightly higher. i did not enter the ER to verify one way or another when i had the problem (to see if...

    Wind Turbine

marinetrader, are you going to give up more info? i read that wind is much more productive than solar, actually surprised you were only getting 10 amps from the mill at 10 mph wind.. i dunno, would have to experience the noise level before i commit to anything like that. perhaps you can run it...

What happened? House batts went dead

yeah, thats not the unit i have. this is the one i have: http://bluesea.com/category/2/productline/overview/387 i crawled around in my ER last night trying to solve this mystery. the ACR is connected to the two house batts on one end, and the engine batts on the other side. lets just pretend...

    Gen Set Min. Size ?

we have the 3.5KW genset (currently out of commission), but this was plenty for us and only needed to run it a few hours daily. we are all AC: fridge, waterheater, stove/oven, icemaker. but no watermaker or a/c... how many watts is a waterheater? seems to be the biggest energy user onboard our...

    Next-Gen 5.5Kw Generator

i found this interesting load calculator, not sure how accurate it is but it provides a decent starting point. http://www.boundlessoutfitters.com/Battery-Load-Calculator-s/129.htm also found a replacement for my alternator producing 90 or 105 AMPS, but it has an internal voltage regulator; is...

    Next-Gen 5.5Kw Generator

is this alternator stuff generic, meaning it will mount on my 3208's belt drive regardless if truck or marine etc? my alts are the ones with the V regulator mounted on it. i like the idea Rick came up with, this way WHEN i do get the genset replaced, I still have the high output alt and money...

    Next-Gen 5.5Kw Generator

*thanks FF, I am not so woried about the last 20%. hope the solar panels can take on the trickle charge.. not sure which V reg is on my alternators, i will check it out. is that an easy re-fit with a smart V reg?

    Next-Gen 5.5Kw Generator

The answer depends on how far down the batteries are at the beginning of the charge. It also depends on if you really are asking how much can you get back out of the battery vs what the*generator*delivered to a battery charger. That figure is called overall system efficiency. Keep in mind that...

    Next-Gen 5.5Kw Generator

does anyone know how much energy is lost re-charging batts? lets say you run a 1.2kw generator for 1 hour, you would produce 100 AHS, how much of the 100 AHS are retained in the batts?

    Next-Gen 5.5Kw Generator

anyone have an idea of the cost involved in replacing a genset? my Onan is leaking oil through the front seal, mechanic says better to get a good used unit.. ofcourse he could just be looking for work.

What happened? House batts went dead

ok , all 4 batteries are showing 13.25 V (after being fully charged and then taken off the charger for 30 mins with load) so i think the batteries are all intact and in decent shape. i checked alternators and they work fine, putting out little over 14V at 1200 RPM. there must be some reason...

    Pets on board?

this thread deserves photos, but first a story. my wife has from the day we got married reminded me that we shall have a dog. now, i love dogs but also understand the burden it is never to be able to travel anywhere without finding good pet sitters and the dog would need outdoor space (if you...

What happened? House batts went dead

*yes i have a 1all2 switch and a bluesea installed switch. the switch is in the 1+2 position, i never turn it off. i dont think i could run the charger off the inverter since it is one and same unit (xantrex). the batts are in good shape (i am pretty sure), i will double check the voltage (i...

1982 Californian 34 LRC Fuel tanks: HOW BIG?? Trip report; up the Mississippi

cant help thinking wow, that sure sounds like an adventure and then to bring along your ailing father, indeed you are adventurous. you were going against the current at 7 mph, you were going how fast in the water? and i can see you are towing a dink also.

What happened? House batts went dead

Hope to enlist a few of the marine electrical experts on this board.. recently on the hook, for just one day and one night. went ashore for some dinner and fun times with friends. come back to a dark boat with no power.. the starting batts were fine, i could crank the engines, but anything...

    Trouble with FB gear selector

update: i was on the water saturday before 4th july and trying to anchor up but the boat kept swinging around. finally figured out the port engine was in forward even though i had it in neutral and in reverse. once i figured it out, i cut the port engine and could anchor and later go home on...

Why in the world did I buy a boat?

What an awesome trip..thank you for sharing. Flywright looks plenty proud sitting high in the water. The Delta looks like a great place to be boating, sure could be fun to try sometime. Excellent photos and video (btw thats nothing for a Californian)

    Earnestly Seeking Advice

I like Marin's quote "buy the smallest boat you can afford"... there is more truth in that then you think. Personally I cannot tell you what to do, you have to make the decision because once you are in, the boat will be your second ball in chain... (i noticed you mentioned being married). But I...
