    Exhaust elbow

A lehman exhaust elbow is less than $200 US with a gasket and new pipe fitting. It should be thought of as a low-cost maintenance item, an insurance policy against much more expensive damage, and if you remove yours then there is no reason even to put the old one back on at that price. Just...

    Exhaust elbow

Don't wait! Replace the elbow now and every 3-5 years. A very deteriorated elbow can look perfectly fine on the outside. Don't ask me how I know...:banghead: This is my new to me TT with the Lehman 120. The first picture is the old vs. new elbow. The second picture is the rust scale that I...

New Start and House Battery Selection (cost/value based)

Thanks, Chris... I can't fit two G31's or G27's in the existing fixed battery boxes but two G24's or one G31 might fit in each box. Might go that way with the start banks. All AGM is probably too expensive given my priorities. Economically speaking, seems the choice for the start banks is now...

New Start and House Battery Selection (cost/value based)

Found this thread so know now that this has been beaten to death. https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s4/starting-battery-size-ford-lehman-120-a-46299.html Still not sure what to do regarding reworking my setup. At least all the wiring is easy to access if I make layout changes...

New Start and House Battery Selection (cost/value based)

...positive this has been covered but couldn't find a relevant thread. I'm planning to buy SIX or EIGHT new batteries for my House, Engine Start, and GenSet banks on my still new-to-me-after-three-years trawler. It's not a small expense and I have two or three choices. Start banks: Four GC-2...

Lehman 120 Exhaust Elbow Replacement - Is It Time?

Here is an example of the internal condition of the exhaust elbows on my boat, which I recently described the engine seizing due to water leaking on the the #6 piston of my Lehman 120. First pic is old and new elbows - no apparent flaws, or difference, in the old elbow from external appearances...

    Ford Lehman 120 Valve Identification

Based on this picture of my head I would say the order is...from front to back (or left to right in picture): 1E-1I-2E-2I-3I-3E-4E-4I-5I-5E-6I-6E The smaller ports are the exhaust. Joe

Lehman 120 Exhaust Elbow Replacement - Is It Time?

I would replace them. Otherwise you will likely face the same situation as I have... On a naturally aspirated Lehman it's not a big task and replacements are only $200 per engine.

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

My exhaust elbow is 6-12" above the water line and goes into a water-lift muffler that has a lift of about 18". The run to the exhaust outlet is about 20' straight downhill from there and the outlet is slightly above the water at light loading.

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

Update to the drama and what I hope is good news. #6 Cylinder broke free after carefully soaking in Kroil and gentle scraping and cleaning with a shop vac - bore looks pretty good to me, only issue I see is pitting on the top of the piston (2nd attachment). Getting it to move was not hard with...

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

Got the head and manifold off today. Signs of water intrusion in #6 and overheating in #4-5-6. After cleaning it up and soaking with penetrating oil I'll see if it can be moved without breaking something. Then I'll be able to see if the cylinder is damaged. Hoping to be able to hone #6 and get...

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

TBD - probably lift the engine a few inches and refill the stringer under the engine with either a) coosa/marine-ply and thickened epoxy or b) sea-cast. I'm leaning toward sea-cast. Then cap with a strong fiberglass layup (either polyester or epoxy resin mix). The whole area of compromised...

Fuse or no fuse for bilge pump?

I've heard from proponents of fusing at or near the pump that there are conditions where the pump motor can be jammed by debris, thus drawing moderate current while overheating. End result is the motor can overheat to the point of melting down and becoming a fire hazard before it draws enough...

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

OP here - let's all be courteous to each other out here. :flowers: The stuck valve on #6 requires that the head come off no matter what is seizing the motor. It's not just open (about .20"- enough lash to remove the seated push rod) but it will not move. All the other valves can easily be...

    Double taxation on property tax?

The other posters are correct - Marin county, or any county in California for that matter, does not have any role in collecting sales/use tax. That is the job of the CA BOE, or if it is not USCG documented the CA DMV. Sales/Use Tax - what you pay the State of CA (one time) when you acquire any...

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

Dave, He doesn't know but speculated that either that or something dropping into the cylinder (huh-what? a valve or a metal-eating termite nest) or damper or something else on the flywheel. We'll see after we pull the head and follow the drivetrain from there... My local mechanic also asked...

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

I talked to Brian at AMC - I'll repeat what I have heard so many times, what a nice guy. He really didn't think that I toasted the engine since the alarm didn't sound. Probably never exceeded 200 deg. We are going ahead to pull the head which needs to be done regardless since on valve is stuck...

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

Thanks for all the ideas. No matter what, the next step has to be pulling the head to inspect and determine strategy. Yes [SoWhat] - I get your point. I would love to have a better boat but I bought this one as a project and however long it takes I'm not ready to give up on it just yet. ;)

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

Thanks SteveK. That is possible, but given the frozen exhaust valve I have to figure out what happened to #6. Something is clearly wrong beyond a possible damper jam. That's why I initially ruled out the damper plate. Thx joe

Lehman 120 seized - where should I spend my next 10-20k?

Hello lehman experts, I've been working hard on Voyager over the last year to rewire and refinish the interior, but at a slow pace as I have little time. As a result I have not taken the time to run the engine/transmission since a 50km relocating cruize 12 months ago. I have great hopes for...

Another Sales Tax and State Registration Scenario

In California the FTB can come after you for up to 8-years in arrears, even if you do not own the boat any longer. In my case, having purchased and used a boat outside of the state for about a year (when the exclusion was 90-days) I felt pretty safe. But nonetheless, I did file an FTB use tax...

    VHF GPS DSC usage poll

Like many here, I have programmed and understand my DSC radios from the docs but never used the feature. Yes, I’d push the red button in an emergency situation. In ham radio we organized ‘nets’, or meetups for local communities and hf long range nets too especially to practice coordinated...
