    Fortress Anchor Retrival

Slow and steady in reverses is the way to go. Going forward on it you run the risk of putting to much down pressure on your bow pulpit and breaking it. I have done this and as mine was made out of steel. If it's really stuck take to a stern cleat and try then. You also run the risk of...

    Refrigeration: 110v (inverter) or 12v?

I was thinking going straight 12v is simpler and less can go wrong if no one is on board.

    Refrigeration: 110v (inverter) or 12v?

It is really hard to justify the cost of a 12v system when you can fill the need really easily with a household model. If your boat is not going to use 120v routinely then it become easier to swallow the cost. If you plan on leaving the boat at anchor with no one on boards for few days 12v...

Has anyone try building parvanes with a reversed hydrofoil?

    Anchor recess vs. pulpit/roller

It all about strength in the big boats. It is really hard to build something that can take storm force conditions and be extended out. The force get scary when you are lifting a anchor and have large waves. The more important part is you are not swing that anchor 10 ft off the water when it...

    Engine hour meter overestimates

Just proof that the hours on engines meters means very little when buying used.

    Gas vs. Diesel

Diesels are much more forgiving I've had gas motors in boats before and they are way more maintenance and prone to break downs. The only upside is the cost of replacement.

    Interesting Erie Canal Article

It would be even more expensive to shut it down. Loss of easy water movement, real state taxes, and eye sore to all those towns would be epic. If you shut it down you could always place your boat on a ship and move it. I think that business could be set up easily.

    Marine vs RV toilet

I placed mine out the side of the hull did not want to smell it up top. I also have the old 5/8 inch vent on the other side of the boat. You will get smell when the holding tank chemical get old. I tried bubbling the tank just got tired of listening to the motor and bubbles.

    Marine vs RV toilet

I have the through hull 18 inches off the water and a loop that is about 3 ft off the water. The outlet is mid ship and never seem to have water intruding into the tank. If it was that rough I want the tank full anyways to lower my center of gravity and reduce the weight shift. The condition...

    Marine vs RV toilet

I use an RV style toilet over a 55 gallon tank. The system is very trouble free as long as you have a large air vent into the tank. The toilet drops the fluid into the tank so fast you need the air to exit through the vent or it will burp in the bowl on the flush. I had 5/8 inch vent that was...

    Pro's & Con's on steel hulls

I own a steel boat and enjoy the endless possibility it has. I rather weld steel then mess with fiberglass. If you want to boat and not worry about ice, rocks, bad docks, or most collision go with a metal boat. You can abuse a steel boat and it will bring you back. Don't buy one if don't...

boating with elderly folks in remote areas

I would rather die at sea with family, friends, and fresh air then in a nursing home. We are born to die make the most out of the time we have and don't fuss to much about the what could happen! I work in emergency department I know the difference between quantity and quality of life.

Boat Speed Affected by Water Depth

I run across a few hard sand bars with less then a foot clearance at 7 knots. I feel the boat slow as I cross them and speed up after returning to deeper water. Maybe close to a knot loss overall. I know I'm not touch bottom because I have had that surprise also.

    Engine Room Paint

If it is bad in your bilges, rent a hot water pressure washer to steam clean all the paintable areas. It saved me a week worth of effort. You end up using a lot less water then you think. You just need to run a quick once over with a degrease like castrol Super clean and then you are good...

    How Reliable is your boat?

If you're crossing an ocean there are ships with cranes that have been know to pick you up it might cost a far amount but you don't have to scuttle your boat. They are always moving big parts around the world.

    All chain rode versus rope

The biggest problem I have with an all chain rode is how do you lift it when your windlass breaks or jams badly. I lifted 70ft of chain with a anchor hang off it it was like 300# total dead weight and add little boat bounce for good exercise. I will never go back to all chain rode if it was...

    Interesting windlass

It no big deal to add an extra shot of line at the end of the spool if you have to. You can take a couple of wraps around the barrel and use it like a capstan.

    Interesting windlass

About 2900 dollars for the winch it operators on 12 volt and is called EZ Anchor. I'm happy with the purchase but you have to work with it's limits.

    Interesting windlass

There is about 350 ft of 5/8 line on the spool, not a lot of break out power at full spool. I will say it is fast system some days I anchor out 10x when looking for fish.
