New Cummins Genset chewing through impellers

Good suggestion on the seacock closure. We've had the same problem with impeller main water pump after hauling. We seem to get an air bubble after each haul that rips the impeller. Solution was to keep the seacock closed as we start the engine and quickly open the seacock to provide water. Works...

Only owned Mahalo for a week, and someone tried to steal her

Notice toothbrush on the dock, change of clothes and food in backpack. The perp was going places - and planned to use your vessel. It would be very hard to sell your boat, so there may have been a bigger plan that ended with scuttling. Being near the border, this situation could have been very...

    Toured a Nordhavn 55 yesterday

Not to hijack the thread, but responding to the v-berth sleeping arrangement question, we do not do either. We purchased a queen size memory foam topper and using electric shears, cut it to essentially European full size dimensions. (56" x 70") The thick pad fits in the v-birth crosswise and...

What Bow Thuster should I get

I acquired a Sidepower bow thruster with my 32 Nordic Tug (1999 vintage). In 2017, the thruster began free wheeling underway, shearing pins and then the brushes gave out and could not be repaired. The core was too worn to be salvaged. Although our 1999 thruster unit was discontinued long ago...

    Boarded by Coast Guard

Although I have a current USCGA inspection sticker, I guess I own an inspection magnet. The tug seems to attract Auxiliary attention every month or so. Mostly they just want to walk through and see the layout. None of the inspections seem focused on safety issues. (They don't look very hard and...

    Oil removal from carpet?

I contacted a pro carpet cleaning crew. They advised we needed to get virtually all the oil collected before cleaning could be effective. No suggestion on how to do it other than hot soapy water and blotters. After 3 repetitions, it's already getting old with many more treatments yet to come...

    Oil removal from carpet?

During the winter, a stowed gallon jug of engine oil cracked and leaked, seeping from from the storage compartment into the glue-down carpet on the forward stateroom floor. Carpet is shallow nylon cut pile. Subfloor is fiberglass. Any better methods to remove oil from carpet will be greatly...

    Nashville to Knoxville

As you probably know, there is a 3-day Loopers' event at Joe Wheeler on Oct 16-19. There may be some space available. You likely will know some of the attendees. Sea Duck II Edit: Scratch that. You have already addressed the Loopers' get-together. - Looking forward to seeing you on Tellico Lake...

    Bossman Bilge Heater

Similarly, I installed a Cumins engine block heater. I plug it into shore power around December 15 and leave it on until spring. It draws 750w and keeps the engine compartment including water tanks above freezing even in the coldest Knoxville weather. Certainly beats a ceramic heater for...

    Chattanooga?

Totally agree on Terrace View. Great family. Home schooled kids and everyone has a responsibility at the marina. Squeaky clean. The restaurant offers a limited menu, but it's all local and delicious. Wife loved the catfish and I did flips for the fried chicken.

    Chattanooga?

Thanks for the update on Hale's Bar. It's been several years since we've stayed there and I wasn't aware it was on a slide. On Watts Bar (really Watts Bar) I recommend Terrace View on the west side or Euchee Marina on the east. Both are 7 - 8 miles above Watts Bar Dam. Floating cabins are...

    St. Petersburg marina recommendations?

Agree on SPYC. Very nice people, superb dining and a great location. I used a reciprocal membership for access. I have no idea what the dues might be, but it's one of the nicest yacht clubs I've visited.

On USCG Form 5397 Section 5 asks for shape of hull. There are 4 options. None are perfect choices. With a semi-displacement Nordic Tug, it looks more like an integrated keel (sailboat) on the bow and a powerboat near the stern. Which is the best response? (Or, does it matter despite threat of...
