What if you hit this at near WOT speed??

Steel, 65,000 pounds, propeller protected by keel and foot to rudder, 8 knots. Log? What log? This is, after all, a trawler forum, and trawlers don't hit logs at 30 knots. If you are going to run at that sort of speed, do keep a good look out - there is more out there waiting for you than just...

    Pensacola area hurricane prep

This morning's 7 AM briefing for us emergency management sorts put Laura making most likely landfall just east of the Mississippi delta, and the Florida panhandle out of the cone. That said, there is a bunch of uncertianty in the predicted track because of the other storm to it's west. I know...

    AIS in dead zone

Thanks, guys. It appears that there are no ground stations nearby - Marinetraffic and Vesseltracker don't show any. If anyone comes to Carrabelle with an AIS, do call me at 931 636-1122 and I'll turn mine on. I'm docked about three miles from the entrance, and half a mile from the marinas.

Best PC navigator for out of US?

My Maptech PC Offshore Navigator is obsolete (company out of business) and most of the popular software choices stop where NOAA charts stop. I'm considering Fugawi 5, and some raster charts I picked up on Ebay come with an openware navigator that I'm struggling to learn. Any thoughts on the best...

Markel will let you add a rider for the Bahamas (or other places) with your paying extra only for the time you are out of the county.

    Plexiglass/Lexan in/near Anacortes???

Please don't confuse Plexiglas (acrylic) and Lexan (polycarbonate). Plexi is harder (you can buff out scratches) stiffer, cheaper, and shatters. Lexan is softer, cannot be buffed, is much much stronger, and more expensive. 1/2" Lexan will fold before it will crack. Northeastern fishing trawlers...

Entering Carabelle inlet in the dark?

I do Carrabelle at night My boat is 43' trawler with 5' draft docked at our house up the Carrabelle River. Don't cut corners coming in around Dog Island - there is lots of water to port, but not to starboard. Then pick up the range to head for Carrabelle. Don't get to the right of the range -...

    AIS in dead zone

We cruise offshore from the West Florida "Forgotten coast, Carrabelle, to be exact. I just installed an AIS transmit/receive system in preparation for a Bahamas/Caribbean trip in January. Problem is that there are no AIS ground stations or apparently AIS boats in range. How do I determine that...
