    Silverton 43 - 2003

For someone wanting a great deal on an outstanding boat the price has been reduced to $159,000. It is now listed with Virginia Yacht Brokers and it also can be seen on Yacht World. There are some new pictures that show a bit more of the boat.

    What's Your Hardware/Fastener Storage Solution?

I use a fishing tackle box. Lots of slots to put same size nuts, bolts, screws, etc. The bottom can handle larger "stuff". With it's handle it easy to move around with you where ever you need it.

Fuel burn rate At 8.0 kts Saltwater Taffy burns 5.8 gah. If you are also running the generator the rate increases to about 6.5 gph.

    Silverton 43 - 2003

2003 Silverton 43 Motor Yacht - Saltwater Taffy While most do not consider a Silverton a trawler, you can certainly cruise at 8 knots just like one and yet, when you need to go fast at 20 knots to make a bridge opening or outrun some bad weather - you can do so. My wife and I cruised over...

Driving from the fly bridge or not?

It is interesting reading about the different comfort levels some have with regard to engine room checks. That is probably how it should be as I don't think there is an one size fits all answer. There are just too many different types of vessels and levels of experience and types of cruising to...

Upside down oil filter Is this going to spill when we unscrew it

It will unless you are mighty careful. You may be able to get a large zip-lock bag with absorbent pads under it enough to minimize any spillage. Good luck.

    Yachting Club of America

My yacht club is a member of both Yachting Club of America (YCA) and the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association. YCA publishes a book each year that list all of the member clubs and what reciprocal privileges they offer to other clubs. This information is also published on their website and your...

New Bern, NC to Crisfield, MD

Another option while traveling Northbound is the Salt Ponds located in Hampton midway between Ft. Monroe and the Back River. There are 2 marinas in the Salt Ponds, both of which have pretty good amenities and these is also a small anchorage just South of the Southall Landings Marina that can...

New Bern, NC to Crisfield, MD

I've anchored several times at Hospital Point anchorage. It's in a No Wake Zone and generally it's not too bad. Once in awhile someone violates the No Wake rule. There is considerable protection from wind by Portsmouth, Norfolk and the Navy Hospital and unless a real storm is in the area you...

New Bern, NC to Crisfield, MD

Last Summer both Portsmouth ferry docking areas were still free.

New Bern, NC to Crisfield, MD

The free docks in Portsmouth are where at the ferry stops. One is at the end of High Street and the other is almost directly opposite the Norfolk down town marina. You can easily see the key ways as you are passing down the Portsmouth seawall. Two possible stops to consider between Hampton...

    What Would You Do?

I know that my marina manager would take action if it happened here (Southall Landings Marina, Hampton, VA). Still, when I saw the owner of the damaged boat I would tell him what I saw just in case something got lost in translation.

    Meal planning

When we sailed to Bermuda and also down to the BVI, my wife pre-cooked meals and then froze them, generally one big meal for each anticipated day at sea. Then we had a good insulated cooler, packed the meals in by the day of anticipated use (first day on top - last day on the bottom) and then...

Curious...price for hull compound and wax?

Unless your hull is really oxidized, and only you can answer that, I'd try just washing and waxing the first time and see how the results turn out. If you're not satisfied, then next time do the full compounding and waxing. The following time go back to wash and wax. Florida sun is tough on...

    AICW Charts

I concur with what's been said about Active Captain. If you use it enough you will find that some posters are "dead on" in their comments and then there are some whom you come to find are a bit hysterical in giving warnings and you tend to disregard them. As stated it's a tool, and a darn good...

Airglide compass, painted, what about adjustments?

A compass swing to be done properly needs to be installed on the boat in its normal position so that anything that has influence on it is accounted for in the adjustment. However for fun and learning sake, your house will be fine. I do not make any movement of the adjusting screws until I'm...

Airglide compass, painted, what about adjustments?

It is easy to swing a compass in this GPS era. On a calm day steer due North using your GPS (or chart plotter) for heading. Of course, using an autopilot helps holding course. Then once established on the North heading, look at the compass and note the difference. Adjust out the difference using...

Converting V Berth to Rectangular Bed

Be careful about what you wish for. A true "V" berth is easy to get in and out of and easy to make it up for sleeping with sheets, etc. A "V" that has had a filler in the space in-between now become much harder to get in and out of and to make it up for sleeping. It usually requires you to get...

    Cockpit enclosure design questions

I had covers made over zippers to protect them from UV rays. I would not use Velcro for the same reason - UV will degrade it.

George Town, Bahamas to St Thomas?

Capt.Bill has good suggestions. I made the trip in the opposite direction. The year I returned the Northern swell was significant and it made the North route around PR problematic and the Southern route preferable. So find out what the waves are doing. I echo his thoughts about the Turks &...
