    Bad Trailer Failure

Tractor Supply stores are usually plentiful in rural areas, I've found them to be a good source for trailer bearings.

Solomons Island - Back Creek or Mill Creek ?

There is a free municipal pump out dock at 38.322870294230455, -76.45892466082485, there is a spigot here to flush your tanks as well as top off your potable water tanks, you need to use your own hose usually. This is closer to Back Creek. For anchoring overnight, I prefer Mill Creek as it has a...

    Value of a Captain's Door?

What is the configuration of the boat you currently have and enjoy? There are frequently prospective trawler owners who come to this forum with a must have list, certain to buy the perfect boat but they just don't have any practical experience to assure them of their priorities. Since you...

    Cockpit Winches

I would consider adding a fairlead of some sort to ensure the working line is always angling down and away from the winch to prevent overrides. I would imagine the cockpit of a 52' is pretty high and rafting or docking would not be a concern but for locking, make sure you have some provision to...

    Looking at a 1980 34 mainship

I run my 1980 Mainship at 7.5 knots with the T6.354 Perkins (165hp) turning 1700-1800 rpm through a 2-1 transmission. It burns about 2 gallons/hour. I would expect the mechanically injected Cummins to be pretty much the same at this speed as the cylinder displacement is nearly the same 5.8 vs...

    Spring 2024 Old Mainship Projects

My boat was launched this week. I have not been in any cross seas yet, but I believe my repair has addressed the problems. Previously, I could get the cabin swaying just by rocking the boat at the dock, it is solid now. Overall, the bulkheads are supporting the flybridge 3/4" higher than the...

    Dark blue liquid in bilge

I am guessing that you will find broken bottle of holding tank treatment while you are searching under the sink.

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

I am in complete agreement, some manufacturers do a better job with modular construction, it can be done well as long as consideration is taken to provide access for future maintenance. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case, even on some of the upscale builds.

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

I prefer the inward flange style but anything is better than the outward flange style which is easily damaged and hidden which goes unnoticed due to a plastic rub rail.

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

I am underwhelmed by the quality of many new boats, particularly cruising sailboats. The design are favoring form over function, over-complicating systems and incorporating features that are unlikely to age well. A dock mate, who bought a brand new boat ended up battling with his in mast roller...

    Need opinions

I would cancel the work order to have the generator removed until you are sure about your plans. Replacing the generator end is much cheaper than the entire generator which can grow into a much bigger project as you may find yourself replacing the fuels supply lines, exhaust, controls, AC...

    Spring 2024 Old Mainship Projects

I picked up the reservoir and learned how closely I came to missing out. The seller was contacted by another party 20 minutes after I had contacted him, offering more than the advertised price (substantially) money and requesting to have it shipped. Fortunately the seller is a standup guy and...

    Spring 2024 Old Mainship Projects

I did something exceedingly stupid this evening on this project. Fortunately none was hurt. I had disconnected my old hynautic steering lines as they were in the way of the new bulkhead supports, I capped off the lines and marked them with tape but at some point crossed up the lines and mixed up...

Now I am trying to envision a scenario one might need autopilot in reverse, interesting.

    What is this switch?

This is a complete guess but maybe it turns on the circuit for a tank level sensor

Dedicated autopilot control or operate with MFD?

I use my SIMRAD MFD's to control my autopilot at both stations. I do have a dedicated control for the AP at my lower station but I never use it. My MFD's have buttons, a knob and touch screen, I would not like it nearly as well if it was touch screen only. My stuff is old, first gen NSS but I...

    Spring 2024 Old Mainship Projects

Here are some pictures of the current progress. I am pretty much done with the bulkhead replacement, I need to install the sliding glass door assembly as well as reinstall the panels that attach to the aft-most salon window and the bulkhead. These are rebuilt and I am working to finish them in...

    MAN i6

I would not be concerned about under loading as long as the engines are able to reach an acceptable operating temperature. Being common rail engines, they are less susceptible to incomplete fuel burn at lower speeds compared to mechanically controlled engines. That said, I am a stranger on the...

    Spring 2024 Old Mainship Projects

I have installed the new starboard bulkhead, here are some pictures. It is supported by a lower section below the deck and laminated together with 45 ° biaxial fiberglass. In the pics, the salon floor is removed about 6" in front of the bulkhead to give me access to tie everything together. The...

    Water Heater Options

On a youtube video of a home built outboard powered mini-trawler, the owner/builder tapped into the cooling system of the outboard and routed it to standard marine water heater with an integrated heat exchanger. Seemed like a bold move but it worked for him. He didn't show the plumbing for it...

    DIY Turbo Rebuild: 3LD?

Another option, assuming your turbo is not water cooled (mine isn't) is a holster H1C or knockoff, it is a more common unit, used on the Cummins 6bt engines found in 1990's dodge pickups. The only adaptation you need to make is a v band adapter to go from 2.5" H1C hot side to the 3" exhaust can...

    Freeze Plug

I don't believe there are freeze plugs above the starter on the 6.354 but the water-cooled exhaust manifold is directly above as well as the raw water line from the manifold to the exhaust elbow so I would examine those as likely sources of a leak. I was surprised by this when I went to install...

    Mainship Mark 1 shaft log

Rod, This looks like the part to me, although the tube that extends into the keel looks a little on the short side. The Mainship 34' stern bearing assembly is about as simple as an installation you could hope for because there is no wood components or coring to worry about and everything is...
