    Boat turns wrong way

I am able to open an engine room hatch and have verified that the prop is turning anti-clockwise. The boat is on the hard now and very little growth was visible on the prop, nor could I find any obvious defect.

    Boat turns wrong way

O C Diver: Thats possible, I'll have to look more closely next time.

    Boat turns wrong way

When I shift the starboard into reverse with the port in neutral, the boat turns to starboard as it should. This seems to be a recent development but the trannys have not been out or worked on recently. It's weird.

    Boat turns wrong way

It has occurred in several different situations. Unfortunately, I'm not always able to leave the helm in order to determine wind direction or which way the current is flowing.

    Boat turns wrong way

my 83 Lancer 44' has two Perkins 4.236 engines with reversing starboard tranny turning 20x20 props. When she is sitting still in the water (i.e. waiting for a bridge opening) if I shift the port tranny into reverse at idle rpm, the bow starts turning to starboard instead of to port as it...

    Perkins 4.236 idles high rpm

My 1983 Perkins 4.236 has started idling at 1200 rpm. I have disconnected the throttle linkage and backing off the idle stop screw but neither has solved the problem. Don't know of this is relevant but the fuel level in the racor for that engine drains down to a point where the top of the fuel...

Onan 15 MDJF-3CR fuel pump help

I actually have two of the 149-1703 pumps, if you still need one.

    Shoring up

If you ever discover that there's a foot of water in your bilge, you'll understand why pumping is germane to the topic of shoring up. Hopefully you will never need such knowledge!

    Shoring up

It occurs to me that I didn't make it clear that a system like I described is only an auxiliary/back-up to a boat's normal bilge pump system. I recently watched a YouTube video channel (Sailing Soairse) where the couple was three days from land when their sailboat developed a crack in the hull...

    Shoring up

It took only a few minutes for my Perkins 4.236 to pump roughly 30 gallons of water out of my bilge. The engine didn't run long enough to get to running temp, but the amount of water coming out of the exhaust seemed normal. That being said, if I am in a situation where I NEED that extra...

    Shipyard fees

My boat had been on the hard at Seabrook marina in New Orleans for 6 years when I bought her in 2014. The PO had been paying a grandfathered rate of $400/month (which included elec), but once the boat changed hands, I was subject to the current rate of $600/mo. Nine months later I...

    Shoring up

Drawing on someone else's knowledge, I installed a T in my stbd engine raw-water intake hose and ran a hose - with an in-line shut-off valve - from the T down into my bilge. that way, if the boat is holed, I can shut off the normal intake, open the in-line valve and use the engine to help pump...

Are "quick-connects" on marine propane systems a no-no?

    Vessel insurance update- Fall 2019

After hearing some of the quotes for coverage, waiving storm coverage may mean the difference being financially able to cruise or not. The thinking here is that we plan to be out of the zone during hurricane season, so not much need for said coverage.

    Vessel insurance update- Fall 2019

So, does it help if the boat owner offers up front to waive coverage for damage from named storms?

    Northbound Upper Mississippi August 2019

Have done several trips out of GTB and the first 70-80 miles of that trip are the worst. Tenn river is OK but the Ohio is one long barge parking lot. If the river is low, you will have to use the locks which are a b***h and there are very few decent/safe anchorages on this river. There are...

    Cruising On One Engine

When my friend and I did our tests, we weren't interested in maintaining a specific speed. We ran the engines at 1500 rpm for the entire tests on the theory that what mattered in the economy tests was that the engines were working at the same hp output all the time, regardless of SOL. Again...

    Cruising On One Engine

I've actually tested the difference 3 times - twice on gas engines and once on diesels (two were my boats and one was a friends). All three times the results were almost exactly identical. Running two engines at 1500 RPM gets you an additional 2mph at twice the fuel consumption. I have also...

    Used Brass/Bronze Parts?

I just finished the sad job of dismantling my '67 wood Trojan 42. The job produced a bunch of brass/bronze hardware like carriage bolts/nuts of various lengths, plumbing brass (1/2" connectors, Ts, elbows, etc) and Groco thru-hulls and seacocks of various sizes. Since I am planning on cruising...

    Toilet smell

You nailed it. My boat, which currently sits in a river, has a seawater foot pump for the galley sink. If that pump and the toilet aren't used for a couple of days, the first several pumps of water will stink almost as bad as the inside of a holding tank. After that it's fine, so the smell...

    Engine starting conundrum

If you've already figured out the problem, please post the solution for everyone's benefit. Otherwise.... Over my 50+ years of mechanicing (both professionally and privately), I've learned that Diagnostic Rule #1 is always look for the simplest explanation first! For example, you can spend...

    Hydraulic steering

I had the Hynautic steering unit on my FB rebuilt by an authorized dealer in FL (name forgotten) and they advised me to use only Dexron 3 if using tranny fluid.

    Strange lights over Exhumas

Are you sure its not the tri-color light on the mast of an anchored sailboat? The movement of the boat in the waves and wind changes would explain the variations in the visible colors.
