NY Times - A few days in the life of a Looper

I kind of agree with Mramoo. I got the feeling the author didn't want to be there, he didn't know anyting about his subject, he didnt really like it, he was kind of disparaging of the loopers, but at the same time he was a little jealous. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. It was unusual for...

    VW Diesels for marine

These are great engines, and putting them in boats would be a fine use. But I bet that part of the deal will be that VW has to destroy the engines. Sad.

    trawler in winnipeg ?

Could this be a scam? Price seems too good, and Winnipeg is an odd location.

    Fuel questions....

Thanks Psneeld. Interesting, so it has a return line, but doesn't return much fuel. Somehow, the lift pump delivers just the amount of fuel that the injection pump uses?

    Fuel questions....

Don't mean to derail the thread, but I'm curious. Do Ford Lehmans not return diesel to the tank?

    Yanmar 4JH4-HTE impeller change

That looks like a great idea. But I think I would get a couple extra of those thumbscrews, just in case.

    Fuel consumption at low speed?

Many years ago, on my first sailboat, a Tylercraft 24, we sailed down thru Hells Gate, circled Roosevelt Island and came north. Before we got back into Hells Gate, we realized we were sailing backwards, witht the sails full and the engine on. We learned a lot on that cruise.

    Fuel consumption at low speed?

Hell Gate is in the East River in New York City. Currents in both directions (tidal) of 5 knots or so max. Swirling, used to be full of rocks, thousands of shipwrecks and tons of gold at the bottom.

    Torqeedo electric engine

Tell me more about that Torqueedo, please. Are the manufacturer's range claims accurate - 10 hours at slow speed? How much does your dinghy weigh?

    Ceiling AC units

Do you run that rooftop RV unit with the Honda EU2000?

    Ceiling AC units

The website claims the 12 volt unit is 8,000 BTU; can't say if that's accurate. It sounds like you have a lot of options, but I kind of like putting film on the windows and ducting the cabin air to the pilothouse.

    Ceiling AC units

Interesting. I never knew there were 12 volt (and 24 volt) ac systems. This company seems to have a good quality item, at least from their description: 12voltac.com They draw 40 amps or so, which is managable from an alternator. Lots of cars have 140 amp alternators these days, so it...

    Ceiling AC units

Do you have a link to that unit, or a brand name? It looks interesting, but sounds like a rather complex thing to install.

    Ceiling AC units

Where will you get the 120 volts, if the generator isn't running? Big inverter?

    Westerbeke 5.0 voltage

If it's running at 1,800 rpm, the governeor is working fine. 7 volts sounds a lot like a bad capacitor, assuming you have no elecronic voltage regulator. Capacitors are cheap and easy to replace, so it might be a good place to start. For a generator specific forum, you can't beat these guys...

    Thanks For a Great Forum

Because of engine problems, or structural problems in the engine room, or something else? The boat isn't far from me, so I will probably go have a look.

    Thanks For a Great Forum

Thanks Menzies. I just don't want to ask a questoion that's been answered a thousand times. That said, I'm wondering how foolish it would be to buy a wooden boat with a 5,000 hour engine. The upside is, it's $10,000. 1969 32' Grand Banks Trawler

    Thanks For a Great Forum

Stumbled over this forum in a serch for info on the Ford Lehman. We are considering a Great Loop trip, and also considering an old wooden trawler (1969 Grand Banks 32) with the Ford. The forum looks great; I may stay up late reading tonight.
