    GB 36 anchor type

We have the 20kg Vulcan on our Monk 36. Works great. I sometimes think the 25kg would have been even better but only because "more is better" and the boat handles the weight of the 20kg easily.

    New England Moorage?

Advantage of Rhode Island For someone commuting from Vermont on weekends, it would be nice to be sure that the weather will be conducive to boating when you arrive. One advantage of Rhode Island is that Narragansett Bay is well protected from ocean swells so even in relatively poor weather...

    Safe Harbor...what's the deal.

In our neighborhood (Sakonnet River, RI), Safe Harbor bought up the Brewer yard and also a smaller private yard (Pirate's Cove). They kept all the staff and leadership in place in the Brewer yard (already very good) and they completely rehabilitated the decrepit Pirate's Cove yard. I think the...

    North east cruise 2021

Agree. Especially to be avoided on summer weekends. It is a decent place to overnight on a cruise between Long Island Sound and the Cape/Islands or Narragansett Bay simply because it is at the midpoint in such a journey and it has a well protected harbor on the west side. Best to just anchor...

    Disadvantage of buyer's broker ?

We used a buyer's broker and found it very helpful. I wouldn't buy another boat without a good broker on MY side to help. It wasn't so much the identification of possible boats (Yachtworld handles that pretty well) but rather the process that occurs after identification that we found our...

No question that New London, Mystic and Stonington have way more services than Fisher's Island. But that's the point of a stop over on Fisher's. I've only anchored a few times in the West Harbor and it is a delightful spot to hang on the hook. Fisher's Island is good for a lovely walk but not...

    North east cruise 2021

I should have added that in a true northerly, Tarpaulin Cove on the Vineyard side of Naushon is a classic harbor of refuge and beautiful too. Only great in a north storm but decent for typical summer weather where the southwesterly usually dies at night. In the summer, get as close to the...

    North east cruise 2021

Hadleys inside is well protected from all winds and seas. Hadleys outside of Bull Island is well protected from southerly seas and moderately protected from the typical SW breeze that usually dies in the evening. Outside is not protected from north wind but there is only a short 1 mile fetch...

    Good/best live-aboard 35’ approx.

Hope you revitalize those plans. We don't live forever! BTW, I lived in Kailua near the beach and in Honolulu in the mid 70s. My family was in Kailua for 45 years and as a loyal son, I visited often :D.

    Good/best live-aboard 35’ approx.

Yes, the 4BT is turbo and 150hp. The 6BT is typically rated at 210 but there are a few of the Nova Scotia boats that got 300+hp versions. To my knowledge very few people try to run the Monk 36 as a "fast trawler" and most agree that 7-8 knots is the sweet spot. It was designed I believe to...

    Good/best live-aboard 35’ approx.

They are pretty common on the East Coast and Yachtworld usually has half a dozen listed at any given time. There were only a few that were built without a center island "queen" (really a true double plus a few inches). The aft cabin is what really makes the Monk 36 much more desirable as a...

    Good/best live-aboard 35’ approx.

The beam of a Monk 36 is 13 feet. It has two side decks so the cabin beam is probably about 9-10 feet. I haven't measured. It's functional but not spacious. It seems about the same as what many similar size salon boats have but certainly not as much as the widebody versions like the Manatee...

I've found the fishermen in Maine to be pretty tolerant of recreational boaters. I suspect they appreciate the positive impact on their economy for starters and they are after all fellow mariners. Lobstermen deal with snagged/lost buoys all the time and I believe generally have strings of...

    Good/best live-aboard 35’ approx.

Monk 36. Excellent sea boat. Very well built (Taiwan before 1990 then Nova Scotia) Most fully depreciated. No teak decking. Usually powered by either Cummins 4BT or 6BT. Some with Perkins. Good access to engine room. Aft cabin with island bed is great for liveaboard couple. Main cabin is...

    North east cruise 2021

Spurs or equivalent is the simple answer. I’ve cruised Maine half a dozen times in sailboats without Spurs and only snagged once. Fishermen helped free us. More recently a couple of tours with a Spur equipped trawler involved only one hit and that was a couple of miles off Gloucester on the way...

    North east cruise 2021

I agree. I prefer relatively quiet anchorages and scenery rather than well known tourist destinations. Shelter Island, Fishers Island, Stonington are all more interesting and peaceful than Block Island in the summer. Block Island can be a nice spot to anchor if you avoid the horror of going...

Mainship 350/390 anchor chain and rode

Nice photos. I have the 44# Vulcan with 5/16HT on a Monk 36 and it works very well. One question: your anchor is not snugged up to the bow roller. Doesn't it wobble around in a sea?

Very basic and stoopit questions about costs...

Agree. Even if the boat is fundamentally sound and well cared for, the refit of electronics, battery and charging systems, cosmetics and a general “major” maintenance of engines etc can add up to many dozens of boat units. Though expensive, it still makes sense to me to correct anything but...

Mainship 350/390 anchor chain and rode

Suggest you do a bit more research before settling on a Bruce. It was a good anchor in its day but has been shown to be quite inferior to modern anchors. Check out Rocna, Vulcan, Mantus and other similar current generation anchors.

Very basic and stoopit questions about costs...

I agree the 10% rule is a good estimate but it doesn't necessarily apply to the first year of ownership. An excellent condition 10-20 year old trawler will still likely "need" some pricey updates during the first year. For example, the electronics package is often 10 or more years old on used...

Mainship 350/390 anchor chain and rode

A 25knot "blow" is exactly the situation that you'd want both chain AND nylon rode out. The nylon provides added stretch after the catenary in the chain is bar tight. Of course a nylon snubber can be substituted if you have an all chain rode but the nylon portion of the chain/rope rode will...

Mainship 350/390 anchor chain and rode

I'd check to see if the windlass can handle 8 plaited rode. Much easier to handle and store than 3 strand. I don't see why a windlass that was designed for 3 strand wouldn't work just as well with same size plaited rode. Agree with comment that a 22lb Danforth style is pretty small for your...

    East Coast Must See Locations

We cruise the same region. I'll repeat that while Narraganset Bay is wonderful (my home port) and the whole Mass/CT/RI coastline is world class cruising, you really shouldn't miss out on Maine. If you don't want to spend two days getting up there, charter a trawler up there. I can recommend...

    East Coast Must See Locations

A few points. I assume you have already cruised the Elizabeth Islands, MV and Nantucket. Buzzards Bay and Woods Hole are worth a visit too: You mention going south, but if you haven't already cruised Maine, it is at least as spectacular as anything south on the eastern seaboard. Don't miss...
