    Dealing with "chine slap"

Lots of boats make some noise from some version of chine slap, but it can range from insignificant to unbearable. OP, you are right to do your homework on a boat model that you may be considering. Don’t rule out everything with chines at the bow, but research other owner’s experiences for the...

Realities of seasonal Seattle - San Diego run

It is not something that hardly anyone would choose to repeat annually once they make the run. The miles, cost, weather, time commitment (including unforeseeable weather delays) and lack of good stops make it something most people do only because they have to, and not because they want to. You...

Happy 15th Birthday to my LiFePo4 battery

Bmarler, Is it Markel? They are the only ones I have heard of that object to LFP.

    Attempted Piracy?

Sat phones are dead. Starlink has taken over the sat com market for serious cruisers, including ocean crossings. We carried around an unused sat phone for the first year of our Starlink service and now that phone is gone, along with the KVH hard-mounted phone/data dish in a dome. A very happy...

    Marine Elegance issues

I had the same symptom on a Tecma and found some sandy particles in a filter in the same location. Problem solvced.

    Twin Engine Trawler Maneuvering Expectations

You mention that the boat has 4-foot hull extension. Are the props and rudders in the original locations? If so (likely so), that could make the boat less willing to pivot. Hopefully not enough so to be a problem, but worth considering and investigating. Better to know the answer before you...

    San Diego Diesel mechanics

I lean towards the dealer if you don’t have a known alternative. Dependable Marine Inc. is listed as an authorized service provider. The authorized Deere locations have a factory connection that can have a lot of advantages. I don’t know this dealer specifically. I also haven’t found...

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

Hip, you make some good observations about stick v modular, but the shortcomings are more in the execution than the concept. Either system can include good design and good access to equipment, and modular (done correctly) is a more efficient and consistent method of construction. Low cost...

    Attempted Piracy?

Sounds like you had good reason for concern, and that you have handled it well. Nice job being as prepared as possible for such a situation. Preparation is important to success in most things, and certainly in boating. Stay safe out there.

    Suggestions needed for removal

Its not officially a win until we see the clapping monkey. Congrats on getting the tube out. Is that an improvised slide hammer, or some other puller arrangement? Edit: now i see the slide hammer on the ground. Missed that the first look.

Looking for convenient pump for dewatering bilges other than hand pump

The little drill-powered pumps work pretty well for what you suggest, and they take up almost no space when not being used. Ryobi and others make them. I have one on the boat that I use for all kinds of things, including removing excess water. Can’t remember the brand that I have but I’m sure...

    Chain and anchor wash down

I think a raw water washdown for the anchor and chain makes perfect sense. That is what we have and use it all the time to clean the chain and anchor as it goes into the chain locker. Then you can always hit the chain in the locker with a freshwater rinse when available, such as at a marina stop.

Swapping AGM Batteries for Lithium Lifepo4

Brooksie, The subject of this thread is Lifepo4 batteries, which are a different chemistry than what is used in cars. Fire on boats is scary, but we don’t need to stop using all batteries because some other kind of battery in some other application has increased fire risk. A properly installed...

Solar Mounting - rail mounts or adhesive on hdpe blocks?

Firehoser’s system looks solid and seems like a good option. I have successfully used mounting blocks and like that approach. HDPE won’t hold adhesive, but other materials will. Both systems that I set up, I made plywood blocks from 2 layers of 3/4” ply. You can fully waterproof them with a...

US Couple in Caribbean feared dead

Don’t use brokers if you think they are so bad. Or choose one of the many good ones. Ten percent is too much? Negotiate a lower fee.
