    Exhaust gas temperature

In my Selene I have a Cummins 6BTA. 5.9 lt She is equiped with exhaust gas temp sensor. It seems to read 2000degrees which I think is way too high. Actually the gauge shows 200 but is marked X 10. Has anyone an idea of correct temp under say 70% load please? I’m not sure where the sensor is in...

    Not Much Cruising in OZ

G’day Simi 60, have spotted your mighty ship at, i think, Bona bay. Also seen you come into Airlie a few times from home.I enjoy that region for the same reasons you do. In the shoulder months when we get a bit of west in the breeze we potter around anchorages that are not often used by those...

    Not Much Cruising in OZ

Bruce, what can I say! Aaah Queensland. Just had a week out in the islands and plan a month between here and Yeppoon. A lovely unpopulated cruising ground. The cruising fleet here in the Whitsundays is as big as I have ever seen. Including large to super sized yachts and power boats. Google “...

    question regarding zincs

Yes the Whitsundays area is a marvellous cruising ground. Mostly being national parks. Cyclones in the lats 10/15 years have resulted in insurance premiums triple. Bastards.

    question regarding zincs

Thank you. Very simple. I imagine zinc anodes would need changing to aluminium?

    question regarding zincs

I see in your photo the actual version of a plan i had been thinking of. Great, how do you regulate the choose the flow from the tap? I have another question. Is there a tool to unscrew the top of the strainer. I have been dropping the bowl to clean it but live in fear of a leak every time i do so.

    Yanmar 6LPA intercooler draining

I understand that it is to be opened when following the rather scary advice on cleaning intercooler. By feeding a small amount of water into the air intake. Flushing it in effect.

    Fuel usage graph way off.

Thank you all. As i understand it the horsepower put out is directly linked to fuel usage. FF, I think that if i am achieving less than a knot under hull speed using 50hp i am already very efficient? Ignoring the waste of a lovely 300hp motor!

    Fuel usage graph way off.

Thanks, i think you are suggesting a coarser pitched prop. I did look into that and you are right this prop is not really optimum. But at a cost of A$5500 for a new one and given the existing economy i think it would take a hell of a long time to save that money. The boat is very heavy, about...

    Fuel usage graph way off.

Thank you all. I think that i am happy with 2.6 gph at 2200 giving me 6.6 knots on a boat with theoretical hull speed of about 7.5knots. Just happy to out there! Fuel at my marina is A1.50 a litre. So averaging close to 1 1/2 litres a nautical mile is pretty good, i think.

    Exhaust elbow

Yanmar recommend replacing elbow at 500 hours for my yanmar 6lpa-stp. Mine is 10 years and only 850 hours and is right adjacent to the turbo. So i did. About AU $2000 cost! Yikes! But discovered damage to exhaust hose where it left the support of the elbow. Not visible from the outside, so a bit...

    Boat Balancing

My two tanks are the same size port and starboard. The boat has a list to port because of fit out. I have valves on return lines and on cross over pipe. I close of both cross over and fuel return to stbd tank effectively using one tank. When needed i can add from the other full tank by opening...

    Tacho failure

THEY ( you know the ones) had all assured me that tacho was driven by pulses from alternator! Now am one of the know alls, at least with this tacho. A wee dab of dielectric grease and good to go

    Tacho failure

Thank you Bacchus. Drew sensor and gave a wipe pretty clean though. Unlike blade connections. Bit of a clean up of connector blades and we are back in business

    Tacho failure

The tacho on my yanmar 6lpa has stopped. Strangely, however, the hour meter part is working as is the alternator. Any thoughts please?

    6lpa Yanmar impeller change due?

I have contacted Yanmar and will advise when i get a response. Not being cursed with freezing temperatures here may contribute to longevity.

    6lpa Yanmar impeller change due?

A year ago when i bought my boat i had a big service done. Included i had the impeller replaced. Having done about 275 hours my thoughts turned to replacement. Imagine my surprise when i find that they recommend check and replace after 1000hrs! I think it is a great motor. Shame about the...

Revs for turbo to cut in

Sounds good i tend to cruise at a stately 23/2400 revs. I do give her a bit of a burst approaching anchorage. So i am now relaxed. Thank you

Revs for turbo to cut in

My 6lpa stp yanmar revs to 3800. Has anyone an idea as to what revs would be the minimum to have the turbo happily spinning. I read that it is not good for them not to be used. Carbon build up etc. fuel being expensive down under we tend not to thunder round at 80% available power.

    Yanmar 6lpa-stp oil change interval

Thank you all. I mostly cruise around the lovely Whitsunday islands on the Great Barrier Reef and except for a couple of longer cruises each year do mostly 2/5 hours a day at about 60/70% of available revs. So cruising at about 2500 of the 3800 rpm available. About 7 knots i calculate hull...

    Micron ap anti-foul

We keep our bost in tropical north Queensland Australia. About 20degrees sth. The marina is shallow and does not flush very well. Thus we are are in a soup that makes very hard to keep a clean bottom. I have read of a newish product Micron ap, which they claim is designed for difficult areas...
