    Indoor cats

We have two cats that we (mostly) keep on board, inside or on deck. It’s very easy when we’re on anchor! Sometimes at a berth one cat jumps off and tries to go exploring! At marinas where we stay, if cats are permitted, they’re supposed to stay onboard, so we watch them closely. We keep them...

    Onboard exercise??

As a suggestion, search internet or YouTube for “TRX straps aerobic exercise”. They seem to have options that might be possible. I have some - a cheaper version - and they don’t take up much space.

    Is Anyone Cruising Right Now?

We started a slow cruise north from Brooklyn in NSW late June. Recently completed a transit from Port Stephens to Coffs Harbour, with two nights on anchor at open road steads and one night in Crowdy Head Boat Harbour. We’re staying at Coffs for about a month before heading north to Yamba.

    Inflatable Boat UV Protector

We recently bought a new inflatable tender so I decided to have a go at making dinghy chaps. I followed a sailrite video for the most part. Very happy with the result.

Mooring pick up with high bow

We have a high bow too. So we pick up the buoy through one of the side doors, thread a rope through the loop and walk it forward. Then we can attach the buoy at bow/foredeck. We wear gloves to avoid barnacles on ropes. This became a lot easier to coordinate since we started wearing headsets for...

Bottom paint, do it yourself or hire a pro?

It’s an expensive hobby! We had hoped to go back in the water on day 5 and we were ready, but didn’t get some engine parts and the marina advised too gusty to tow us. So we spent the weekend painting, including the plimsoll line, outside the foredeck and some blue on the Portuguese bridge, and...

    The Poseidon Adventures

Today we received our finished table, custom made to a specific size with a drop leaf and an amazing compass rose all in keeping with the style of our boat. Highly recommend Simon Begg. https://www.simonbeggswoodturning.com/

    The Poseidon Adventures

Hi Grant, Thanks for your comments. Re Radar, it’s not required on pleasure craft, and we’re certainly not planning to cruise at night. That said, we’re looking to install AIS which will integrate well with our Garmin. Re alcohol storage, what a good suggestion! Feel free to subscribe to my...

Fuel Dock Prices - anyone filling up these days?

In Sydney, we just put in 1000 litres, about 264 gallons, and paid AU$1.35/litre. So currently, about US$3.29/gallon.

Bottom paint, do it yourself or hire a pro?

We’ve always done our own. Best tip someone gave us was to use different coloured anti-foul. First coat red, second coat black. Makes it much easier to see where you applied the paint and how much it’s worn since the last time. Very satisfying. And as it happens we’ll be doing this again next week!

    Name Change

Our boat is called Poseidon. Decided not to invoke his wrath, or pour copious quantities of champagne into the ocean to appease the gods. I wrote a blog post about it if you’re interested. http://poseidonoa50.com/why-didnt-we-change-her-name/

    Humor

Just saw a news item saying Australians are drinking more alcohol these days. Immediately thought: what a good idea!

Hi Paul, I love our boat, but must say I have a little bit of “boat envy”, especially as we don’t have bow thruster, stabilisers! Cheers, Pam

Hi Frosty, Thanks for your reply. The pics on this forum were definitely selected for photographic appeal (and I’m not a good photographer, but the weather was amazing yesterday). And yes, that wooden double-ender is a beauty. I actually have a soft-spot for wooden boats as we had a Colin Archer...

    The Poseidon Adventures

Hi Brian, Definitely will catch up when the travel restrictions are lifted. Robert has mentioned you’ve done a lot of work on your boat, so would love to see her. Cheers, Pam.

Thanks for the suggestion Greg. I tried to, but it seems that signatures are turned off for this forum.

    The Poseidon Adventures

Today I went for a short kayak and discovered Brooklyn's "boat boneyard". I was amazed and saddened to see so many neglected boats nearby. I imagine these boats once represented the dreams of an owner/family going out and exploring the beautiful waterways on our doorstep, the Hawkesbury River...

    The Poseidon Adventures

Thanks Paul, and you prompted me to add a search bar! I’m not sure the data limits, but I’ve been compressing images. When I run out of space I’ll probably just buy some more since this site is also my hobby. I’ll have to think about how I want to separate the blog posts! Good luck with your...

    The Poseidon Adventures

Hi Rick, Thanks for your reply. At Australian marinas, a single 15 amp (at 240 volts) shore power pole is pretty much the standard. This means we have no issues getting a berth with our power requirements. We specifically chose not to have air-conditioning as this reduces our power needs a lot...

    Anyone Cruising These Days?

We’re currently staying out in Brooklyn, NSW until we can start our cruise up the east coast of Australia. But with sunsets like this, can’t complain.
