    How things have changed

I feel like I have been reading more than posting for the longest time. To see information about our boat so this all makes sense visit www.mvtakapu.com Throughout the southern hemispheres winter (I am based in New Zealand) a lot has been happening. We moved of MV Takapu for good after...

How large trawler can I single-hand?

I have single handed my 94’ on my own a couple of times. If the weather is awesome and wind isn’t off the dock it’s a breeze. If I had bow and stern thrusters I’d be fine. How you set you ropes up and wether you can simply grab them or if you have to lean over and hook them makes all the...

    Automatic shore power switch?

Thanks for the comments team. The issue seems to be that the power switch installed currently is energized to stay on. Given the simplicity of the setup, the electrician has suggested this can just be changed now to a manual on/off switch.

    Automatic shore power switch?

I have an older boat, when I connect to shore power I have to switch a manual switch down then up to engage it. If there is any fluctuation in voltage, the switch will flick off like a fuse almost resetting itself to the off position (and our batteries will kick in). The issue I have is that...

    Super capacitors vs batteries

I have big diesels that require some serious power to crank them, much like the rest of you. Batteries are around $450USD each conservatively and last around 4 years. They get a real hammering. (that means $900 for a 24v bank). If I was to add 2 of these (one for each engine)...

What is this? Wet exhaust outlet

I spoke to the previous owner who I was hoping would shed some light on the issue. He couldn't understand why it was locked closed the was it was, other than that the valve may have seized part closed. So with this knowledge and the understanding that it should be fully open, I am going to...

What is this? Wet exhaust outlet

This pipe exits from the smoke stack muffler box. So - well after the mixer, muffler and before the smoke stack exits the top of the boat.

What is this? Wet exhaust outlet

The wet exhaust injects seawater ex heat exchanger into the exhuast flow after the turbo which settles into a muffler. The seawater from that can then drain from that muffler out the side of the hull through the aft water outlet. The muffler is then piped to a second muffler box above the...

What is this? Wet exhaust outlet

That is the through hull fitting to offboard the seawater from the wet exhaust. When viewed it looks like a purposely installed restrictor. My questions is whether I’m right and if it needs to exist as it’s only one one side. I’m guessing it might have been installed at some stage to solve an...

What is this? Wet exhaust outlet

So I have a 2.5 inch valve and the water flow out of it is very low. Upon removing the Pipework I can see the following, but I’m unsure if it’s anflow restrictor? It’s on the through hull valve for the wet exhaust outlet of the exhaust system. The design of our system have two outlets...

    Diesel Oil Stains, Oh Crap!

I'm going to make a wild suggestion here : Try using some detailers clay bar on a small area. It might just work. Or - you could use the finest grain sandpaper and then buff smooth again once completed. As for the decking mat material - might be needing to be replaced if its absorbent like...

    Talking trash

There is a heap of incredibly effective "odor" reducing bags on the market. We have babies on our boat who poop lots and trash doesn't get stinkier than that. As long as we compress and tie off the bags they store relatively well out on the deck with little or no odor. Food scraps over the...
