    Space between pilings and boat

Depending on the length of your fender board you may consider end protectors that will prevent the fenders from sliding off the end and allowing the fender board to rub against the hull. I screwed these on the face of the fender board to use the full depth.Paul

Additional Helm Chairs for 2004 MS 400

Hi Bay Retriever. I am touring in Japan so it may be a while to get you some photos. 1) I used 3/4 inch plywood and epoxied and painted. I believe it was interlux hatteras white but will look to see if I still have the can. The rounded front corner was two 2x6 glued together and shaped with...

    Mainship 400 Generator Coolant

TRIGGER WARNING! Readers of MS 400 coolant / generator posts are advised that doing so may cause stressful bewilderment or guilt feelings from taking pleasure at the misfortune of others (Schadenfreude syndrome). Apoplexy is possible flowing from excessive anger or humour. Individuals currently...

    Mainship 400 Generator Coolant

OK, I know when I'm beat and give up. I have spent two days and have the starboard pillars and lower frame out but unlike others my reverse access screws are too short to grab from below and back off to separate the upper frame from the horizontal rails. I was able to separate the front...

Canadians doing the Great Loop US Border/Homeland Security

Things have changed! Hi Captain May. We have had several USA cruising permits. 2005 east coast loop into Maine, 2018 bringing Blue Moon up from Annapolis, 2019/20 doing the loop and 2022 for Lake Champlain and western Erie. The application of the law has changed each time and varied from state...

    Only 90V AC Shore power

Ditto #20 Gary in post 20 and the reference to Red Pearls site is the key. I had the Blue Seas switch installed to give access to the 208 taps. $139 & $250 installation. We have hardly used it. MS 400 AC’s are rated 208/240 volts so are fine with 208. My AC circulating pump is 230 volts and...

Mainship 400 storage under bench seat

Thanks. The Stella Blue site was bang on what I was looking for. For others doing the addition: The special hinges referred to are available on Ebay as Sea Ray part 2087958 16 gauge SS 7 inch. The vendor was great lakes skipper. My cherry board came 3 1/2 inches tall so I went with that...

    Mainship 400 replace cockpit step

I have now installed the new step. The step is bolted on and as they spin and there is no rear access I ground the heads off. I could not manage any way to capture the cut off bolts and nuts so they are rolling around the bilge somewhere but I am comfortable thinking the are too big to clog the...

    Mainship 400 High Water Alarm

I found a 4 wire bundle that runs from the HW pump float switch up and behind the breaker panel in the ER. It has a plug in it. When I disconnected that plug all three pumps and the alarm turned off. Yet all four pumps are still operational, even with the plug disconnected, meaning that their...

Mainship 400 storage under bench seat

Hi Seevee and all. I was looking for the hinging detail that is used for the under bench seat storage. As I recall it was done to allow for easier opening and clearing the table top better. A Z-hinge? Any pictures or help appreciated. Thanks. Paul

Eyeing the Loop from Austin, TX

Hi Scook1. If you have not joined the AGLCA you should consider it. The have a dedicated sub-group for families doing the loop that should be able to help with many of the practical issues travelling with kids on board. Paul

    Sundeck Trawler

Hi Don. If you are planning on doing the loop or lots of locking a sundeck style without a cockpit can be problematic. Going down in a lock your grab points will be close to water level so the dock hand will have to climb down the ladder and hang on to ??? to reach out and down and wrestle the...

Mounting a step into the lazarette

I use this protector as a step and the plexiglass is also strong enough to sit on. I use some starboard blocks on the inside and slide toggles to keep it in place. Paul

    GB 42'....the 'almost' perfect boat

Hi Prarie Salt. You might consider chartering one. Southwest florida yacht charters has a couple of Grand Banks for charter. Florida in December is nice. Paul

    Some clarification, please

Hi KatheK Below is a list I made after chartering a 390 and purchasing our 400. It may be of some help. We've been very happy with the 400 after 5 years, loop and 9,000 miles. Happy to try and answer and specific questions. Paul Mainship 400 Pro’s and Con’s Pro’s: Great walk around has been a...

    Bilge pump better than Rule?

Self priming? Hi Larry. The only thoughts that I would add: 1) Are the pumps self priming? On my sailboat the small Attwood with built in switch would not self prime from a dry bilge. I switched to a diaphragm pump (suction hose, and float switch, only in the bilge)l. Winterizing this winter I...

I second the suggestion of chartering a boat close to the size you are considering before you buy and possibly with a training captain. Look at South West Florida yacht charters as a winter possibility. Le Boat on the Rideau Canal for next summer or several charter companies on the Erie Canal...

    Mainship 400 lost GPS connection

Thanks both. With more diligence ( and flashlight and cutters for wire ties) I was able to find a splice from white to black and a hidden sea talk connection block. Now the detective work begins to find the fault. For future reference then cable ran inside the port fly ridge coaming to the upper...

    Mainship 400 lost GPS connection

My GPS has disappeared from its E80 main base in my 2006 Mainship 400. I have not been able to trace it. It starts out white coming down the mast and disappears behind the Jenair in the summer kitchen. Only black wire show up the Seatalk junction boxes, E80 and E120. Does any one know where my...
