    Interesting boats

Wow! "At wind of over 12 knots, and anywhere from 10 degrees onwards off the nose, IETA can self-produce up to 1 knot of additional speed, (or when the wind is to beam)" Cruising at 6-8 knots she has a range of 4300-7000 nautical miles, and she has 1700g (6500L). So guess would be around 1L/nm...

    Is Maretron on Life Support?

I've been going Maretron - n2kview, ipg, mPower. Starting to wonder if I've got on the wrong horse as a) there's a lot proprietary in it, including the mPower details, and b) they aren't making stuff modern - n2kview is ancient and clunky in UX terms, and while it was great there's a lot of...

    Solar arch frame installed

Very interesting. How are you planning on getting access to cleaning all the panels, esp. those in the centre?

So well put, and I agree entirely with. RIP Simi

    New Build - Electric Powered

Wow. Looks really compact for that size. Did you see what voltage?

    Bilge pumps with digital switching

Thanks Kevin. Definitely listening (no point in asking if you aren't willing to listen to sensible, logical and experienced advice!). Would you know how the modern boats with digital switching (Czone, etc) do it to minimise the risk?

    Bilge pumps with digital switching

True on the reliability, but there's three reasons why electrics and electronics typically fail on boats: incorrectly spec'd and built wiring and fusing, corrosion, and lightning. I'm making sure the first and second are ok by renewing the wiring and fusing. The third is beyond "ensuring" as...

    Bilge pumps with digital switching

Thanks, I do agree. But perhaps I'm lured by the chance to get the notifications (including when off-boat), count and hours. I priced out other options just for counters of on/off and hours, for 8 bilges, and that alone was equal to using the digital switch unit. That doesn't even count for the...

    Bilge pumps with digital switching

I'm rewiring for some digital switching - lights and things - and thought that while the digital switching aspects aren't particularly needed (ie. switch things on/off from anywhere), the other benefits of bilge on/off counting, counting hours/mins on, and getting notifications through N2K...

    Bilge pumps with digital switching

Wiring a bilge pump with separate water-detection switch is relatively straightforward: +ve wire from unswitched to water-detection switch, water detection switch to pump (aka "auto") +ve wire from switched panel to off/on manual bilge switch, then straight down to pump (aka "manual") ie. 2x...

    Sounding from tender - handheld?

Use the stick to draw a line on the water where the mothership should go :thumb::rolleyes:

    sharrow propeller. a revolution?

    Love the "Conversation starter"! P1: What's that? P2: It's a screw. P1: you've lost a big one there, definitely not many left. <end of conversation> :D

    Sounding from tender - handheld?

Oh nice. Thanks all. I like the idea of the Navionics - except they don't play Garmin at all :frown:, which is the main boat MFD at the moment. Hawkeye is nice, but doesn't create a chart allow one to create an entry line. Hmmm, speak softly and carry big (battery-less) stick seems to win...

DIY project: Adding a fuel consumption data to older diesel

Because you say it worked in the past at the longer term usage (not moment by moment), it seems they have controlled for temperature variation between in and out which is a problem with the more basic wheel units. Is there a minimum flow it'll measure? Our NA's return very little. Sorry - my...

    Sounding from tender - handheld?

Thanks everyone, great ideas and answers. For those who have separate sounder on the tender rather than using the same unit, how do you transfer the data to the main boat's unit or at rather how do you decide the track to go in on (given you may have meandered quite a bit on the tender to find a...

    Sounding from tender - handheld?

What do people use to sound when using the tender to investigate possible entrances/access? We've a 1.1m/3+' draft, so talking areas already less than 3m deep. piece of string piece of string + weight piece of string + lead (to see what the bottom is - though if it's deep enough I can't see...

Maretron N2kView with Yacht Devices & Actisense adapters

I have old NA engine data coming to N2K through a Chetco Seagauge connected from the analogue display panels at the helm. Then through to Cerbo and IPG100 on the n2k bus, with the Cerbo running Signal K (to eventually pull off the data into the NUC for longterm) and the IPG into the router for...

    Remove flybridge, add solar

Have a look at YT channel Motor Sailing for Old Dudes about his genoa on (essentially) a powercat. Benefits are as much about the 0.5-1kn addition when wind is in the right direction as the dampened motion of the boat when wind is quartering. I'd second the solar bimini. We're replacing a...

    Gas verse Diesel Engines

Others have given useful information, but to help your search since this is an international forum, you could add "petrol" to your search terms since in much of the world "gas" refers to things like propane, LPG, etc.

Ok, I’m convinced to putt along at Hull speed, but

The other thing to check is your shaft seals. Some of them are lubricated via sea water from the motor - our PSS seals are like this. However, even if they are so lubricated, it may not be a problem: our PSS seals can run without lubrication (ie. free wheeling) up to 11-12kn, which is far above...

    Electric Motor Efficiency Cost

Re: fuel efficiency, if you are using the alternators in diesel mode I contend you can approximate the hit to fuel consumption by looking at the generator's use compared to the kW at a certain speed/RPM. For example, if you have a 100hp diesel that at a certain RPM "A" you use for your speed...

48-volt house bank. Next Gen for boats?

Yes, my thought too. Works decently, perhaps really well, for heavier vessels at low speeds, say around 3-5knots. Could even deal with the silly wind against tide/lee shore/9,000mph super hurricane argument decently for as long as your battery lasts.

48-volt house bank. Next Gen for boats?

The fine print there says input power: 6kW, propulsive power 2.7kW. I've never seen it quite said that way but I suspect there shouldn't be much loss in the straight through drivetrain. If so, then it's only a 45% efficient prop :nonono:... which doesn't equate to their "58% overall efficiency"...
