    Cat diesel??

I used to deliver a 46' Whiticar Sportfish from FL to VA each spring and back in the fall. It had the 3208TA/375 hp I never had a problem with the engines. On the last run before the owner re-powered with John Deere's the engines had a little over 10,000 hrs. At cruise speed around 2300 RPM's...

    Cat diesel??

In a past life when I was repairing engines. A lot of the guys in my area had trouble with the 425 hp version of the 3208 Cat breaking crankshafts. The 355 and 375 hp versions were really tough, but the 425/435 hp not so much. Just my limited experience.

    Bottom Paint

I have had good luck with Micron Extra. This is my third full season in the water and I'm just starting to get a few barnacles on the hull. When I was redoing the the hull I had it peeled to the original gel coat. After applying an epoxy barrier coat I put on one coat of light blue and two...

    Need your advice on this

My boat has the SS tube stanchions and the two aft ones act as drains for the top deck. I am planning on enclosing the aft portion of the boat from the hand rails down to the deck. Primarily to keep the dog onboard. I was thinking of replacing the forward most SS stanchion with a fiberglass...

    Need your advice on this

I would think they all support to the bridge deck. I have one on each side of my boat. They are fiberglass and I was thinking of adding a second one on each side for more support. I have a davit mounted aft on the bridge deck and I was thinking one of these posts would be helpful located near...

I was aboard this boat today. Wow!

An old crabber here in the Chesapeake once told me that the Deadrise work boats were built at 32' 42' and 48' depending on were the boat was working. The length had to do with the the spacing of the waves. The guys that worked the open water wanted the 48' boat so it would be on a couple of...

Anyone in the Chesapeake Bay area heading to Crisfield, MD for the crab derby this weekend or to Deal Island for the Skipjack Race on Monday?

    City water connected to boat

When the wife and I were living aboard we used the onboard tank. 150 gal. fiberglass tank. I found myself refilling every three or four days. I added a 10 micron sediment filter on the suction side of the pump and charcoal filter also 10 micron on the pressure side. I get these filters from our...

Life's Uncertain Drink the Wine Now

Thanks JD, I'm sure your right about the memories the boat holds. My problem is I have spent so much money in repower and upgrades I just can't make myself take the hit right now in the current economy. I feel selfish for thinking that way. But as long as the wife wants to do long weekends I...

Life's Uncertain Drink the Wine Now

I prefer the single-malt and a cigar. It's great while you ponder the long term and enjoy the view while swinging on the hook.

Life's Uncertain Drink the Wine Now

I always hoped I'd be able to retire with a boat I could cruise around the Chesapeake Bay. As a younger man (still a younger) maybe much younger man I was into fishing offshore. My wife just enjoyed a little bottom fishing now and then. In 2002 I started running some sportfishing boats between...

DirecTV on the boat without the antenna

What brand of antenna can you get for $900. When we lived aboard we had a dish mounted on a piling at our slip. Just relied on the regular antenna (pretty bad in our area) or the DVR when we were cruising.

    Auto Pilots

When I bought my boat it was a project boat at best. I spent three weekends getting it ready to make the 100+ mile trip to a boat yard near my home. It then stayed on the hard for two years going through a major rehab. It had a dual station teleflex type cable steering arrangement but I new I...

Top 3 list for your current trawler...good AND bad.

Pluses 1. The wife loves it. Most of the living space is on the same level. She picked it out. 2. Overhang on the cockpit. 3. Very economical even with twin engines when cruised at 8 - 9 kts. Minuses 1. Would like a larger cockpit. 2. Island type bed. I get up earlier and have to climb over...

    Pets on board?

When we lived on our boat we bought a toy poodle. She came aboard at 8 weeks old. My wife taught her to use the puppy pads. It worked well for three years. When we travel Cindy will take her in the ladies room and put a pad on the floor and she takes care of business. She always got a little...

    Fuel injectors

That works well for most older diesel engines. Not so much on the newer common rail electronic injectors. When you loosen the fuel line to the injector your are shutting off the fuel to that cylinder. Like pulling the spark plug wire off of a gas engine. That cylinder stops firing while the fuel...

    Time to replace the batteries.

I appreciate the advice. I didn't realize it took so much longer to charge the last 20%. I found last year on a five day cruise that by the third day I was running the genset a lot to keep the batteries up. I bought the boat in 04 but didn't start using it until 06. The 8D gels were in the boat...

    Time to replace the batteries.

I have 4 - 8D gel cells. One each as starting batteries and two in series as house batteries. We like to stay on the hook as much as possible. I currently have a Xantrex 40 amp charger and just the standard alternators on a pair of Volvo TAMD 41's. The engines are wired to a Guest battery...

First time buying liveaboard -- help!

I bought a larger boat for a cheap price, thinking I've been in the small boat repair business for over 20 years and working on yachts the last few years. I ran the boat from the marina where I bought it to a marina near our house and had it hauled out. It stayed in that yard for two years and I...
