    Raw water pump dripping water

Thanks to all It’s geared, not belt driven, so no way to check shaft looseness without removing pump. No water in oil, so good there. Think I’ll order a new pump and have shipped to one of my next couple of ports of call. Then I can have the old one rebuilt to carry as a spare. Thanks again.

    Raw water pump dripping water

A couple of days ago I noticed a new rust-colored spot on the diaper under my port main engine (Cat 3116). Traced it to the raw water pump which had a couple of rusty streaks from the slots in the pump housing. No water drips with engine off, nor at idle speed. Today I checked it while underway...

A/C unit heats but won’t cool

Ski, I live in Virginia but boat is currently in Florida; just bought it and prepping for the trip home. Temps were high 70s when I was last on the boat and noted the problem. Nate, don’t have the rotary knobs. Controls are SMX II digital panels. Thanks guys.

A/C unit heats but won’t cool

Thanks to all. I tried tapping on the reversing valve with no effect. Wasn’t sure how vigorously I should tap it, but gave it several raps as firmly as I dared. I too thought it might be a control panel issue. Will have a tech come check it out. Just wanted to check here before doing that so I...

A/C unit heats but won’t cool

I have a 16000 btu Cruiseair reverse cycle unit. Worked fine last time we were on the boat 3 weeks ago. This weekend found that a/c wouldn’t cool. Unit powers up, fan blows, heat cycle works. On cool cycle, fan blows, but compressor doesn’t kick in and raw water pump doesn’t run. The LED over...

Dropping the mast on an OA 450

It’s a fiberglass mast, hinged at the deck. Most if not all of the Classico series of boats from OA have this mast.

Dropping the mast on an OA 450

I just bought an OA 450 Classico. Our long-term cruising plans involve the Erie Canal system, which will require us to lower the hinged radar mast to get under the low bridges up there. Theoretically simple, as it’s hinged, but as I think more carefully about it, maybe not so simple after all...

Back pressure found at survey-deal killer?

Thanks to all. It sounds like its worth further investigation. My (apparently mistaken) understanding had been that back pressure was usually caused by one or more “ leaky” piston rings and so was suggestive of need for overhaul. Good to know that the explanation might be less serious. Will see...

Back pressure found at survey-deal killer?

While shopping for a boat we found a listing for one that sounds really promising. Our broker called about it for us. It was recently under contract and went to survey where the engine surveyor found “a little back pressure” in both engines. The boat is 2006 vintage. Engines are Cummins QSM 8.3...

Boat shopping in Florida these days?

Thanks to all! As usual, lots of good ideas. We haven’t decided yet, but are contemplating using my vacation week next week to head down there. 3 potential boats to look at. My sister lives in central FL; haven’t asked her yet but expect we can stay with her. We’d be within 2-2 1/2 hour...

Boat shopping in Florida these days?

My wife and I continue our search for a 40-something foot motor yacht. As always, many of the good prospects are in Florida. Ever since the Covid outbreak started, traveling anywhere has been problematic but now, especially, we’re really conflicted about whether we’re totally crazy to think...

Sold: 1990 44ft Tollycraft in Florida

Actually my wife noticed it. Interior light is a big priority of hers. So then, was the exterior glass work well done?

Sold: 1990 44ft Tollycraft in Florida

Heatz, if I’m interpreting the pictures right, it looks like the triangular windows in the galley and dinette have been paneled over on the interior; can’t tell about the exterior because they’re under the windshield sunshade. Are those windows still there? If so could the interior paneling...

Rufus, thanks so much! That’s very reassuring. David

    OA 440 performance

Steve, thanks the additional info. I’m getting this boat to do the Loop. 85% of the trip will be at displacement speeds. We’d like to have the option of 15 kts or so to allow us to make the offshore run up the Jersey coast in 1 day, weather permitting; likewise the Gulf crossing and Great...

    OA 440 performance

Thanks, TR. Other than the usual AC units and a washer/dryer combo, I don’t think there’s too much heavy gear on the boat. Oh, just remembered, it does have a Freedom lift on the stern, so that would add some weight. David

    OA 440 performance

Does anybody out there have direct knowledge of what kind of fast cruise speed can be expected of an OA 440? Not WOT speed, but sustained cruise speed. The Powerboat Directory says this: Twin 250hp GM and Cummins engines cruise the 420 or 440 at 15 knots (about 18 knots top), and 350hp or...

    “Non-Defever” Defevers?

Saw a FSBO ad on another site for a 50’ Defever Performance Offshore Cruiser, 1989 vintage. Clearly states it was designed by Dough Sharp, and doesn’t look like classic Defevers. Very good looking boat, just wondering what makes it a Defever. As I understand it Defever didn’t build boats...

Tolly 44- room for onboard laundry?

Oh, I should have added, this boat has an offset queen in the main stateroom back aft. It runs at a 45 degree angle out of one corner of the stateroom. I hadn’t seen that in a Tolly 44 before, but it changes the cabinet arrangement from the usual. Pertinent, as I’ve seen pictures of a laundry...

Tolly 44- room for onboard laundry?

I need input from you Tollycraft 44 owners out there. As my wife and I search for a boat on which to do the Loop next year, a Tolly 44 has come on the market relatively close to us. It appears to be in great shape and may be a great candidate for us. Thing is, one of my wife’s “must haves”...
