    Bromine tablets for ac units

Same experience with bromine tablets. For several years have put a small copper fitting, purchased at Home Depot, into strainer and it works great. Similar effect to copper bottom paint for growth.

    Dirty dingy help

My best luck cleaning dinghies is using Z-Cleaner. My problem was soot from the diesel exhaust since the dink is on the swim platform.

    Water in the bilge

Buy a TDS (total dissolved solids) tester on Amazon (or anywhere else) for < $20. The same kind boaters use on their RO water makers. Saltwater averages 3,500 ppm +/-. I've seen it as high as 6,000 ppm. Bottled & rain water usually < 100. Tap water ~ 400.

    2002 430 Aft Cabin

We removed that door on our 2005 MS 430 to get some big stuff out of the boat. It required us to remove the panel to the left of the sliding door (screws & caulk) first. Then lift off the sliding door. Reverse to reinstall.

    Southern California Marinas

We're making plans to ship our boat ( a MS 430 Aft Cabin) from Florida to Southern California this winter and are looking for advice on marinas. We are looking for places with annual plans between Long Beach and San Diego. We would live aboard about 5 months per year. We are East Coast /...

Engine oil changes: hot or cold?

I went to one the Yanmar engine maintenance classes at Mack Boring and they recommend "warm", i.e. run the engine for 10-15 minutes, heat the oil up a bit and then change it.

ZF Electronic Controls - Fails to Shut down an Engine

I have the exact same boat and engines and have had that exact problem. It turned out to be the stop solenoid mentioned earlier in this thread. If you swap solenoids between the two engines and the problem moves to the other engine it will confirm/refute this. We now carry two spare...

Prep for a 2005 Mainship 430 Trawler Survey

We have a 2005 430 w/ twin 370 hp Yanmar engines. Owned it 4.5 years. Put about 7,000 miles under the keel. No major issues, normal maintenance. For the survey, we did hire separate engine surveyors - that's all they do.

    Brown mustache

We have used several of the recommended products but now stick to lemon juice. The acid in lemon juice won't hurt you if you get it in / on you.

Air Height 430 Aft Cabin Trawler

We have a 2005 2005 430 Aft Cabin also. Mainship documentation says 18'8". Our own measurement agrees with that. We went thru the Erie Canal last summer and minimum bridge clearance thru to Oswego is 21'. Don't know about Seneca clearance. NY State Canal System website has all clearances.

    Mainship 430 lighting question

Sorry for the slow reply, I just saw your battery question. Our setup is different from yours because we don't have a thruster nor an inverter. We had an electrician permanently combine the two battery banks that split the house loads.

    Anchor Wash-down

We have a bow, raw water, anchor wash down that runs from the engine room bilge. Works great. If you run near your engine or generator, be sure the hose is rated for below the water line and engine room service.

    Brown mustache

Lemon juice works fine. If you get some in your eyes, you won't go blind. Most of the acid products suggest goggles, gloves, masks, etc.

What about the Mainship 430 trawler ?

Mainship 430 We have owned a 2005 Mainship 430 (2 stateroom model) for 4 years and have put 1,000 hours & over 5,000 miles on her. We live on it for 3-5 months each year and have traveled the East Coast from Canada to south Florida. It is comfortable live aboard boat and is able to anchor...

Onan 20kw generator- How quick should it start ?

We had a 21 kw Onan that had a similar problem. The wire run from the start battery was too long for the wire size. Moved the battery close to the starter and it start instantly every time.

    Generator Stratagy

We just bought a new Honda 2000 ($999). It's predecessor lasted 10 years and did not crap out but fell overboard (don't ask). At about year 7 it was running rough and I replaced the carburetor ($140) and it ran like new again. We consider a Honda the most reliable piece of gear on our boat...

    Brand Of Oil And Filter

I respectfully withdraw from this discussion. Unfortunately social media instruments can't seem to support reasonable exchanges on many topics. In the boating community it appears we need to add engine oil to the list of inflammatory topics that includes anchors, VHF radios, batteries and a...

    Brand Of Oil And Filter

OK here goes. I retired from a major oil company and spent quite a few years in the lubricants division. Those who have said that is not difference in oil brands are spot on. About 80% of the base oils made in the US come from Exxon, Shell, Chevron and BP. Also over 80% of what's in the...

    Mainship 430 lighting question

I have the same boat. Most of our interior lights only operated on shore power (even though they were 12 v) because they were wired thru step down transformers (120 v ac to 12 v dc). We removed 4 of the 6 transformers on our boat and wired the lights directly to the 12 v panel. Three of the...
